This year has definitely been a unique one for movies due to the global pandemic.
Disney’s Mulan was initially released on Disney+ for an additional fee, and Marvel’s Black Widow has been continuously delayed and actually won’t be released until 2021. Today, we heard some more news about another Disney film that was set to be released later this year in theaters.
Disney and Pixar’s Soul was announced quite some time ago. It was originally set to debut in June of this year, but then was pushed back to November 20th.
Recently, we’ve gotten a sneak peek at the film, spotted some merchandise for it in Disney World, and even heard about a short that was set to premiere in front of the movie in its theatrical release.
But, now we’ve got a new update! According to the Pixar Soul Twitter page, the movie will be streaming exclusively on Disney+ on Christmas Day — December 25th!
In international markets where Disney+ is not available, Soul is set to be released theatrically but the release dates have not yet been announced.
Bob Chapek, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Walt Disney Company, said that Disney is “thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December.” He also noted it is a “truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”
Variety reports that, unlike how Mulan was initially released for a premium fee, Soul will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on Christmas day at no additional cost.
Soul follows the story of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), who is a middle-school band teacher. Joe gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town, but one small misstep takes him from New York City to “The Great Before” — the place where new souls get their personalities, quirks, and interests before they travel to Earth.
Joe is determined to get back to his life in New York, so he teams up with a soul named 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), “who has never understood the appeal of the human experience.” And, here’s the real kicker in Disney’s description of this film: “As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.” Bring in the tissues!
Pete Doctor, the film’s director (who also directed Inside Out and Up) says that “‘Soul’ investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days.” He said he hopes the film will “bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.”
In a press release about the film, Disney has noted that “With over 60 million subscribers within the first year of launch, the Disney+ platform is an ideal destination for families and fans to enjoy a marquee Pixar film in their own homes like never before.”
We CANNOT WAIT to wake up on Christmas morning and watch this movie with some nice hot chocolate, all bundled up in our Christmas pajamas! We’ll let you know as soon as we get more details so be sure to come back for more updates.
