I was born the year Disneyland opened and went to Disney World for the first time two years after I graduated from high school (1975). Since then I’ve been back many times and have even made it to Disneyland twice. I’ve been with family and friends and still enjoy going. We were supposed to go last September, but the pandemic put an end to that. I still hope to return sometime next year or early the following year.

I was a student at Walt Disney Elementary in Anaheim from 1962 to 1968, just a couple of miles from Disneyland. Walt dedicated our school in 1957 and on that day, spontaneously invited all the students to Disneyland (to the chagrin of the teachers and staff. He even sent buses to load all the kids onto them. I was honored to meet and help Walt do a presentation at a special PTA meeting inside of our character adorned cafeteria/auditorium (Walt had a studio artist, Bob Moore, draw up murals and donated them) when I was a 3rd(?) grader there in 1965. I will never forget the honor and awe of that day, remembering his friendly smile, him greeting me by name with that twinkle in his eye and his attempt to make me comfortable with small talk and instructions for his presentation in one of his many grey woven tweed jacket. A couple weeks later, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Disneyland, he came again with his Disneyland entourage of the 1st “Miss Disneyland” ambassador, Julie Reihm, the Disneyland Band and the 3 Little Pigs. When he passed away the next year, a tv news crew covered our sad tribute ceremony by our flag pole in front. I was honored once again by being invited back to the school to give a speech in 2017 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Walt’s dedication of our school. Among the other honored guests, the mayor of Anaheim, school officials, both Disneyland ambassadors, was, of course, Mickey!

The year I was born, Peter Pan was released. Rick Moranis was born 6 days after me, and 2 years later, Disneyland opened.

When I was born, Walt was working on Disneyland and Cinderella (The first full length animated feature film). In 1950 2 years later they both opened. Reading through this brought back so many fond memories. 🧡🧡🧡. Thank you.

What an amazing history and track record for one man’s dream and to those who carried it forward. Never to be repeated or eclipsed, Walt Disney was truly a living legend in his own time…. Thank you for the recap, it has been an Magical Journey.
