Yes, hello, it’s us again, and we’re here to tell you about a very neat Disney patent!
You know that we love to lurk in the Disney filings to see what new technology the Imagineers have in store for the theme parks and beyond. We’ve seen innovations with drones for nighttime shows and LOTS of virtual and augmented reality inventions. But wait ’til you see the latest Disney patent!
Back in July, Disney filed a patent for a “Vehicle Mountable Holographic Promoting System.” That’s pretty much what it sounds like: A system that can create a holographic image on top of your car — or any other vehicle for that matter.
And yes, we mean ANY other vehicle. In our opinion, the most exciting part of this patent is the illustration that depicts a MASSIVE hologram system mounted on top of a monorail. In the image, it’s projecting a hologram of Cinderella Castle with fireworks bursting above. A subtitle notes, “Join Us Tonight!”
Wow! We can’t imagine something more tempting than seeing a snippet of Happily Ever After cruise by us in hologram form, especially atop the monorail! This seems VERY futuristic; it’s the kind of thing that shows us that Disney is still on the cutting edge of technology!
And the tech isn’t limited to particular vehicles. The patent also mentions use on boats and even drones. This innovation could be useful in plussing up nighttime spectaculars. Still, the most practical application and the one that the language focuses on the most is in using these systems for advertising. That totally makes us think of movies like Star Wars and Back to the Future. So cool!
Well, it certainly will be interesting if some of this tech shows up in the parks one day! We’ll keep looking into Disney patents so we can show ya all the neat new tech. Stay tuned so you don’t miss a beat!

Could this possibly mean new monorail cars also?
Norman says
How would it fit thru the Contemporary. It fills the opening into the contemporary almost completely
Barry Moss says
The interesting thing about patents is that you need to reduce them to practice before you can file the patent; that means Disney has at least a prototype working to some degree. Now whether they can work out any bugs and decide to actually deploy the technology is another matter, but this does sound interesting.
Randall Clifford says
Sounds kind of tacky looking, especially during the daylight hours… I think it ruins the the sleek futuristic aerodynamic lines of the monorails. As we have seen in the past, not every new Disney idea works well.
Mike says
Don’t forget I would be fun to see.the high hiking ghosts on top of the monorail as it does its loop
The Werewolf says
Not a hologram.
Hint: It’s NEVER a hologram. Seriously – NEVER. Large scale real holograms, especially animated ones, are really hard to make – and they don’t project a 3D image into space.
Heck, this doesn’t even look like a Pepper’s Ghost (that’s how Rey’s image is done at Rise of the Resistance)… it looks more like high speed spinning LEDs.
