One of our favorite counter-service joints, Contempo Cafe, has perfected another yummo cupcake that I can’t wait to tell you about!
Previously, we’ve shared our reviews of the Apple Spice, Chocoalte Peppermint, Dulce de Leche, and Black Forest cupcakes here at Contempo, and now we’ve got a version of my very favorite cake in the world — the Red Velvet cupcake!
You can find this snack in the bakery case at Contempo Cafe in Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Walt Disney World. Just bypass the ordering machines and head right to the cupcakes!
Once again, this cupcake sports the lighter-than-lard frosting common to most Contempo Cafe cupcakes. It’s not as light as a whipped cream frosting, but it is definitely not going to satisfy those of us who still order their birthday cake from the local bakery, complete with that thick, fat-full frosting!
That said, the frosting is still quite good, and it shouldn’t be a reason not to order this snack! Red sugar crystals are incorporated into the frosting, and there’s a border of red sprinkles around the edge. (Personally, I’m not a fan of sprinkles as I don’t want to chew anything waxy as part of my cupcake, but, alas.)
Inside the cupcake we have a wonderful surprise — as we do with all Contempo Cafe cupcakes! Here we have a serious cheesecake center, and by that I mean it’s straight cheesecake in there! My experience here reminded me of when Heather and I first tried the red velvet cheesecake cupcake at the Plaza Inn in Disneyland!
You can see clearly in the next two photos that the cheesecake center is thick and rich — this may not be the best cupcake for the kids unless they’re huge cheesecake fans. 🙂
The cake in the cupcake was very good, and with the thick cheesecake center, the lighter frosting seemed more fitting than it did at first bite!
I can highly recommend this cupcake — it’s probably one of my favorites so far at Contempo Cafe. It may be seasonal, Contempo tends to switch out its cupcakes periodically a la Boardwalk Bakery, but rest assured that if this one isn’t in the bakery case, there will be something equally as enticing! 🙂

My husband’s favorite cake is red velvet and he requests it every year on his birthday so he would LOVE this.. I might try to see if we can take a side trip on one of our Magic Kingdom days and head over to try Contempo Cafe. He’ll get the red velvet, I’m more a dulce de leche girl!

Thanks for the warning! I love cream cheese frosting, but I can’t stand cheesecake. (And I too think sprinkles are a waste of time!) I’ll just have to wait and see what Contempo Cafe comes up with to replace this one when its time is up.

My wife tried this on our last trip and we both loved it (of course she let me try it). Very rich.

OOOoo, make my day! Looks fantastic!
How would you (or could you even?) compare it to the red velvet cheesecake cupcake at Starring Rolls Cafe? I’m guessing the Starring Rolls version might be a little more indulgent than this one? But hell, I’ll try it no matter what the answer!

Looks amazing! Red Velvet is my favorite, and the fact that it has cheesecake in the center makes it look even better! I need to make a stop at Contempo Cafe and try all these wonderful cupcakes. I’ve never gone before.

I ate one of these enormous, rich, weighty cupcakes over Marathon weekend (in the midst of all the lithe runners ordering vitamin water, haha). It nearly killed me. 🙂

Marci — Would love to hear your thoughts!
Carrie — Ha! My pleasure! If you need me to eat any more cheesecake for you, just let me know!! 🙂
James — Yay! DisneyNorth approved!
Jeff C — This is completely different from the Starring Rolls version — agreed that it’s a bit more indulgent over there!
Kat — Yes!! Head over there ASAP! Let us know what you think! 🙂
Jenn — Hee hee! It’s worth the risk! 😉

AJ I’m so with you on the full fat frosting no sprinkles! Who wants to eat crunchy bits that taste like nothing when they’re biting into a delicious cupcake!?

Hubbys fav cake. Of course I can’t make it like his Mom. BUT……….This looks like it might be close! He will prob try both the Starring rolls and the Contempo versions! Will let you know what he thinks after our March trip!

I had to try these when we were there over the holidays and they were so yummy! Let’s just say we saw that chocolate Mickey a couple times while we were there. 🙂

How would you go about asking for a recipe from Disney World. I had a red velvet cupcake at Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary and I wrote them for the recipe but have not heard back. Do they give out recipes? I have not found it in any of their cookbooks. Thank you!
