At the beginning of 2021, Disneyland announced that they would be discontinuing the Annual Passholder program and replacing it with a new membership option.
Until that new membership option became available, Disney fans with active Annual Passholder memberships as of March 14th, 2020 were transitioned directly into the Legacy Passholder Program. This program gave members discounts on food and merchandise all around Disneyland until a new program could be introduced. Yesterday we found out Disneyland was going to announce their new Annual Pass program, and it’s finally here! We have the details about WHEN you can buy Disneyland annual passes again!
Disneyland just announced their Magic Key Program, which is the name of their new program for ALL annual passes.
The passes will go on sale on August 25th, 2021 no earlier than 10AM PT. So mark your calendars, people!! There are 4 different kinds of “keys” (AKA tiers) including the Dream Key, Believe Key, Enchant Key, and Imagine Key.
If you’re purchasing on August 25th, your first opportunity to reserve a visit to Disneyland park or Disney California Adventure will be that same day!
Disney said that for a limited time, they will be celebrating the charter members that become Magic Key holders within the first 66 days (celebrating Disneyland’s 66th anniversary). If you’re one of the first people to become a part of the new program, you “will receive a special welcome package that will include unique items such as a premium branded pin, celebratory button, magnet, and more!”
And, Magic Key holders who enter Disneyland park will also have access to a limited-time experience at Starcade in Tomorrowland (which starts September 1st) where they can use charging stations, have a special photo opportunity, and “other fun surprises” according to Disney.
Monthly payment plans for the new annual passes are ONLY for California residents. You can purchase your Magic Key pass through Disneyland.com and on the Disneyland app, where you will have access to an interactive admission calendar for your pass type to see reservation availability and book your reservation.
We’ll have details about the program soon, so stay tuned to DFB to learn more!

Glad to see annual passes will return. The only draw back I have is that you have to reserve your visits each, whereas before you could go whenever you wanted to at any time on non black out dates. Being a long time pass holder, my family often would just go on a whim. Many times I would pick up my daughter on a Friday after school, and we’d say “let’s go to Disneyland”. Or we would be in the area and go for the rest of the day, or just wake up on a Sunday morning and get up and go. Now we have to see if the if the park(s) are booked that day ahead of time. So much for spontaneity as now it’s more of a hassle with limitations.
The other thing I fear, is that with DL still having limited capacity, we may not be able to go on the days we want (even when full capacity returns). Being locals, we don’t plan it out months ahead like a DW vacation. We basically go when we feel like it and it’s not a black out date. So now we are limited being that once you make your reservations, you can’t reserve any other days until the firsts reservations are used. I also hope they don’t limit pass holder reservation in favor of non-pass holders. After all we all know that non-pass holders will spend more money on their visit’s, and that is exactly what Disney wants.
It seems to me they are trying to discourage pass holders to go as often as they use to go. But the one of the main issues before was crowd control where on any given day, most visitors were pass holders. It’s like they want your money, but they really don’t want you to come as often. They had a million pass holders, I wonder how many will come back?

Can anyone confirm that there are only going to be a limited number of Magic Key passed sold? I read in the fine print today that this is the case but maybe misinterpreted the phrasing.

Luann, we’ve looked at the language as well and found it to be unclear. It seems to imply that Passes may be limited, but Disney has not said this outright. We will keep our eyes and ears open for more info on this.
