We’ve seen our fair share of weird things at Walt Disney World.
But, one thing that we don’t always tell you about is the weird things that WE do when visiting the Disney parks. Maybe it’s because we’re modest, or maybe it’s because we’re too embarrassed to admit some of these, but it’s time to come clean. We’re letting our freak flags fly in the hopes that someone else can relate to these 5 things that we always do!
Count Daily Steps
Remember when the world got serious about hitting 10,000 steps a day and the FitBit was the hottest watch on the market? (Anyone else have competitions with friends to see who got the most steps in??) Well, we’re no longer pacing around our living room as we write, but at Disney World, it’s a whole different story. We get REAL serious about hitting that step goal and then showing it who’s boss. After all, the parks are big and we can certainly hit more than 10,000 steps in a day.
It becomes a mini badge of honor to see how many steps we can tackle in a day. 20k? Nice. 30k? Welcome to Disney World Beastmode, my friends. At home, it’s downright embarrassing how little steps we take in a day — but at Disney World, these boots (well, sneakers) were made for WALKING.
Care At All About How I Look
We’ve basically made yoga pants and sweats the official work from home uniform. But, when it comes to a day at Disney World we make sure that we’re dressed to impress. Jeans? Hope they still fit because they’re going to Magic Kingdom! Skirts? Didn’t even remember we owned them, but it’ll be perfect for EPCOT! And, it’s time to bust out that straightener because we’re ALL in for looking nice at Disney.
Between pictures and just wanting to look our best when we’re skipping around the parks (it’s what Uncle Walt would have wanted, right? 😉) we just find ourselves caring just a little bit more in Disney World. We’re not entirely sure how or why it happens like this, but Disney World always gets the best version of us.
Order 2 Drinks With Every Meal
Okay, now remember you promised you wouldn’t judge us, right? 😉 One of the more…unique…things that we do at Disney is order at least 2 drinks with every meal. And, we’re not talking about ordering all the cocktails on a menu to give them a try — two just seems like the right number when it comes to hydrating at Disney World. It could be water and soda, soda and a cocktail, or water and juice, we need choices so we order more than one every time!
There’s a bit more of a reason behind this one, so hear us out — when you’re walking around Disney, your busy riding rides and taking in all of the experiences so you don’t think to drink. Ordering TWO drinks with your meal kind of makes up for it…at least that’s how we’re going to justify this one. 😉 (OK, fine, so we like choices too!)
Ride the Same First Ride Every. Time.
Another thing that we always do that is a bit on the weird side is ride the same first ride every time that we visit Magic Kingdom. No matter what time of day it is when we get to the park, there’s one ride that feels like a “welcome back” for us. For some folks (like some on our team!) it’s Pirates of the Caribbean.
Now, this ride isn’t necessarily our favorite, but some of us normally head to Adventureland first when we get to the park (again, why? Not sure!) and this seems like the best first ride to hit! Then we’re stuck singing “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me” the rest of the day — IYKYK!
For other on our team it was Space Mountain or Spaceship Earth, or any of a number f other classic rides. Whatever that perfect first ride, our trips just don’t feel RIGHT until we’ve been on it.
Smell Everything
We’ve arrived at the last weird thing we’re willing to admit to — we smell EVERYTHING when we’re at Disney World. And, not your normal “get a whiff as you pass the store” smell…we will go so far as to stick our nose just a little outside of our ride vehicle to take a deep breath in and smell the air. Put us on Soarin’ and you’re in trouble — how many deep breaths can we get in during the Fiji Islands scene? The limit does not exist. Don’t get us started on any time EPCOT let us smell oranges… .
We’re not just talking rides with known smells. Some of you know what we’re saying when we tell you “old Disney ride” smell could be bottled and sold for 100 bucks an ounce and we’d still be HERE FOR IT. It’s that combination of old animatronics, clothes, and dust. Lots of dust. Spaceship Earth’s Library of Alexandria burning scene smells ahhhmazing but don’t disregard the power of literally any other scene on that ride. Or the Enchanted Tiki Room. Or Haunted Mansion. Mmmm….old ride smells.
Oh, and Disney hotels! That’s another place you can take us solely for the sniffs because they smell REAL good!
Basically, Disney World has a distinct SMELL and we love it! Someone else has to relate…right?
There’s pretty much nothing that will stop us from doing these weird things at Disney World and now you’re in on the secret! OK, cards on the table, getting them out there…they don’t sound as weird as we thought. But everyone has a distinct way they do Disney…so what’s yours?!

My daughter’s and my favorite perfume is Laila. Smells just like the lobby of Bay Lake Resort! I have purchased it in the gift shop at The Contemporary and also at EPCOT in the Norway pavilion!

My friends and I are OBSESSED with counting steps. Years ago when we went as a group, we had our phones tracking steps, and were AMAZED at our daily steps. Now, my best friend and I have Fitbits, so we can’t wait to see how many steps we get on our next trip

The first time we went to Disney World thirty five years ago, we stayed at the Contemporary. Every morning my wife would apply her perfume and to this day that scent reminds me of the Contemporary Resort.

I ALWAYS count steps. Record so far is 34,792. On another day I hit 16.2 miles. Interesting thing is that I can tell how busy the parks are by my step/mileage ratio. I have a long stride and when the parks are busy I have to take little steps because I get stuck behind people.

Thank you for posting the awesome EPCOT scientist from Spaceship Earth. She is one of my faves and never gets enough love.

I always make sure to wear separately themed outfits for each park. Magic Kingdom gets a Cinderella inspired color scheme. EPCOT, I wear pins representing the various flags of the World Showcase. Animal Kingdom, a pith helmet and safari inspired button down shirt. Lastly, for Hollywood Studios I wear a Princess Leia t-shirt, hair buns, and a custom set of Star Wars inspired Mouse Ears. All with black yoga pants!

Love Laila perfume. You can purchase Laila on Walmart.com on line for much cheaper. I also purchase the body wash.

I thought I was the only one who loooves the smell of the old dark rides!

Okay, the smell inside the Mexico Pavilion. There is obviously the chlorine smell from the water, but there are also the food smells from San Angel Inn and some indefinable smell from I don’t know what. It’s not the same as the Pirates of the Caribbean smell or the Small World smell, even though they both have water. We love it.

Always, say hello to the statue 0f Roy Disney in the Main St. USA park by the flag pole. Without Roy, Walts Dreams of Disneyland and Disney World may have never come to be. We thank Roy on every visit, then proceed to Casey’s to have a Hot Dog on Main Street
Mike Corbett says
Guilt as charged !
Also, 1st picture, first bathroom, and first snack.

I have a spreadsheet comparing the steps/miles/calories burned from all my Disney trips, also averaged out by day so I can compare (and also know what I need to work up to pre-trip so I’m not completely crippled after the first day)
Essie says
I can’t count steps as I have to use a wheel chair, by I always do the HM as my first and last MK ride and yes, I’m not glamorous, but I try to always look nice in the parks.

This article just made us laugh out loud cuz we TOTALLY do this!!! (Not the drinks, cuz we space those out all day!)
Nancy says

I definitely do the step contest and dress my best things when I go!!
I always HAVE to have a Mickey Ice cream bar at least once during my trip. I sometimes try to have one in each park, but I sometimes forget!
When in Epcot, first ride I have to go on is Spaceship Earth! I also always have to get a bag of Caramel Popcorn from Germany, as well as say hi to the picture of the lady who looks like my grandma that’s on the wall of Karamell-Küche! Lol
