On this glorious Friday, I thought we’d highlight another beloved snack in Epcot’s Norway — the Rice Cream!
Sadly, I haven’t had this treat for AGES, so I was excited to have the chance to CHOMP on this while I was doing research in December for The DFB Mini-Guide to Epcot Snacks e-Book! You can find it at Norway’s Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe!
Rice Cream is probably not as popular as the school bread we featured a couple of weeks ago, but it’s definitely in the running for one of the most classic Epcot snacks around.
This not-too-sweet delight consists of a light rice cream pudding topped with sweet strawberry sauce.
The rice cream itself tastes vaguely vanilla-y and has a gelatin/pudding-like texture. Think tapioca, but with rice, if you’ve never had rice pudding before.
The strawberries are what add the sweet kick here. The slightly syrup-y strawberry sauce is not the same as the strawberry jam used in the waffles at Kringla Bakeri; this is more like a preserve-like ice cream strawberry sauce (hope that makes sense!).
I think the main positives about this dessert are its simplicity and the fact that it’s not actually super-sweet. It won’t take you down for the count sugar-shock-wise, and its light texture means you won’t be too weighed down to keep up your pace around the World Showcase. Serving size is right on as well — not too big, not too small. There’s a reason why the Rice Cream at Norway has kept so many fans happy for so many years! 🙂

We had this with the dessert at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall and it was amazing! I’m a big fan of rice pudding and all the many ways it can be prepared, and this does not disappoint.
On an additional note the entire meal at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall was amazing! The meal for us is a close second to ‘Ohana! A must for everyone, even if you don’t have a little princess!

I like rice pudding and strawberries, so this works well for me. You’re right that it’s also not overly heavy or sweet. Plus, the fact that it’s served cool is nice in the ever-present Florida heat.

Jill — Thanks for this awesome review! I agree that Akershus is a hidden gem! Most people don’t try it thinking that they won’t like the food, but it’s actually very eater-friendly!
Rich T. — GREAT point that it’s served chilled, so you can get a bit of respite from the heat! Thanks for your review!

How have I never seen this before? It looks yummy and refreshing. Adding one more thing to my never-ending “to do” list of Disney food!

I LOVED this when I had it. I really like rice pudding but most of those you get commercially are sweetened to excess. This isn’t and my husband didn’t like it because he wasn’t expecting the flavor. For him, even the strawberries didn’t fix it. OK, more for me!

mmm rice cream sounds great – i’m looking up a recipe now!

I tried this last year at the F&W Festival and loved it!
I’ve always been a rice pudding fan, but growing up, it was always served warm. The fact that it’s cold is a huge plus in FL and the strawberry topping is super yummy. I didn’t know they had it at Kringla, but now that I know, I’ll definitely be getting it next time I get to WDW. 🙂

i think this was the first dessert i had at disney . we had it at akershus hall on the dessert plater.. very yummy didnt know you could get it on its own.. i wonder if you can use a snack credit..

I usually like desserts that aren’t too sweet but the rice cream is a little too bland even for me. I am a huge fan of rice pudding (think cozy shack brand from the grocery store) and I think the rice cream needs to be sweetened up a bit. It was good though other than that.. I just don’t think I can pass up a school bread in place of this dessert when I’m at the Norway bakery!

I never understood the strawberry sauce. I believe rice cream is traditionally served with raspberry sauce. When i first saw it i asked, “strawberry sauce?” and thevtall blonde behing the counter gave a knowing smile and a shrug. The old Lutheran ladies at church would not stand for strawberry sauce, but I find it yummy. Basically, this is the best bakery in WDW.
JoAnn says
I haven’t tried this. It does look good.

I love rice pudding. I don’t love the strawberry sauce. Oh well, it’s halfway there.
AJ says
Shayne — For shame! Rice cream = classic! Looking forward to what you have to say on this one!
Teri — Don’t you love the “more for ME!” desserts??
Lynn — Let me know what you find!
Victoria — Yes, they DID have a version of this at F&W last year! Good point! I think there are even more strawberries on top in Kringla!
Canadians — Yep! It’s a snack credit!
Marci — Nope; you’re a school bread devotee, I think!
GG — Ba ha ha!! Love the mention of the old Lutheran ladies at the Church! This gets your vote for best WDW bakery, eh? I’m not sure if I would have guessed that from you, but it’s good to know!
JoAnn — Let me know what you think when you try it!
Catherine — Ha ha; you ARE a glass-half-full kind of person, aren’t you? Though I don’t know you to have many glasses with anything left in them at the end of the day! 😉

Ditto on the Kozy Shack respect – I always eat their rice pudding cold from the fridge. This does sound just like rice pudding to me so I will probably pass on it.
Tracy says
Wonder if you can get this with some lingonberries instead of the strawberries… Now THAT would make my grandmother happy! (They use them in the muffins…)
AJ says
Tracy — Yum….Lingonberries!!!

I went to Epcot last weekend, and I tried the Rice Cream. I figured since it was so close to “ice cream” that it must be good. I fell in love with that stuff!

I don’t even have words, I’m just looking for any place I can let the world know. For starters the rice cream is the one and only thing for my entire life is my must have. No if‘s and‘s or butts. My love for this dessert goes beyond words. I just left a card in utter and sheer deep disappointment. We were here a couple months ago and all was good. Just had it and they added cinnamon! Completely ruined it. The strawberries were different andThe texture was mildly different and cinnamon! Absolutely horrifying.OK I know things could be a lot worse but y’all, this is just absolutely terrible and uncalled for.
