It’s been a WILD week at Disney World!
Not only did we get a TON of news about this year’s holiday season at Disney World, but we’ve also been at EPCOT’s Food and Wine Festival eating and drinking ALL the things. But we’re not done yet…because today, we discovered something new!
It wasn’t that long ago when we started seeing paper straws replacing plastic ones across the Disney Parks. But today, we dropped by Joffrey’s at American Adventure in EPCOT and we found a NEW kind of straw — and it’s made of sugar! How sweet, right? (See what we did there?)
Okay, so technically, it’s a Sugarcane Straw, which is made from a byproduct of sugar processing — it’s made from the plant fibers left behind after sugar is processed. So don’t worry — this straw won’t get soggy like the paper ones do. It’s 100% biodegradable, compostable, AND reusable.
We checked a few Joffrey’s locations, and right now, we’ve only seen the new straws at this Joffrey’s — the other locations we checked still had paper straws. But we expect that these will roll out to other Disney World locations soon, so we’ll keep an eye out for them!

What are they using as a binder in these straws? Hopefully not gluten. Does anyone know?
R. P. says
I haven’t used the straws but I do buy bowls made with sugarcane for my mobile mac & cheese business. A little more money but better for the Earth. Way to go Joffrey’s!!

I can’t find any information if using these straws affects blood sugar, does anyone know?
S.Luke says
If you look up PLA is still requires special industrial composting to compost it is still PLASTIC it is the same plastic used for 3D printing but if you use the right feel good words people will over look it and pat you on the back for using it.

These sugarcane straws use PLA as a binder

Here is the content of the email reply I got:
“Thanks for emailing us! Sugarcane straws have zero effect on blood sugar and can be safely used by diabetics or anyone that can use a regular plastic straw.
Once sugar is extracted from the sugarcane crop, the remaining plant fibers are then processed into pellets to create our sugarcane straws.
The straws are made in a way where it’s food safe and does not impart its composition in the food or liquid it comes in touch with.”
