Sure, we had an amazing dinner during my recent (and very first! But not my last!) trip to Bongos Cuban Cafe recently.
But I’ve been keeping a bit of a secret from you from that evening!! What I haven’t told you yet? There’s deliciousness to be enjoyed at Bongos even in their gift shop!
Popsycakes!
We spied this display in the shop, right next to the cashier, and I was intrigued. They looked like they’d be pretty bad, overly-preserved Little Debbie knock-offs, but I knew we had to check them out for ya!

What is a popsycake, you ask? Well, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock like me (or your love is only for Mickey Bars and Disney cupcakes), you’ve heard of the cake pop craze.
Think of an enormous cake pop, but with a pretzel rod for a stick. Because really, if you can do away with the inedible parts of food wrapping, you SO should.

The popsycakes come in four different flavors, although I’m not certain the Vanilla Bean version was available the day we were there. But the dark chocolate one included an Oreo — two desserts in one!

While the Dulce de Leche version came in both milk chocolate and white chocolate versions, we ultimately went for the white chocolate one.

The ingredients are less-than-exciting. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t pronounce anything on that list. So my skepticism continued…

At first glance, you might wonder what the tie-in would be to Bongos. But once you get the treat out of the wrapper, you can see that they resemble edible maracas, a nod to the Latin music vibe that you experience at the Cuban restaurant.

I’ll be honest here. I thought I’d be taking one for the team! I guessed that the cake would taste manufactured and dry and be a big disappointment. I mean, cake pops randomly and “roadside” at Bongo’s? How good could it be?
But it was…AWESOME! The cake was very tasty and moist. The creamy-sweet dulce de leche flavors showed through, and were echoed in the white chocolate covering, which was delicious — not plasticky or fake-tasting at all!

And the salty pretzel stick was pure genius! It was the perfect combination, with the white chocolate coating, the dulce de leche cake, and the accent of chocolate on the pretzel. I intended to take a bite or two, but I just kept eating (an all-too-common problem for yours truly).

So, to wrap up, I will be sneaking back to Bongos to get another one of these treats sometime in the very near future! Who’s with me??!?!?

aye popsy! (ba dum dum! cymbal crash). It’s been FOR.. EV…ER since I’ve been to Bongos so of course I didn’t know about these but they look fun and yummy! Not to mention I love the different variety of flavors! If I get to downtown disney on my next trip I might buy a few… Do you think they would travel well? To bring home as gifts?

Marci — I think they would travel fine except for the chocolate coating. As long as they’re not in direct sunlight or extensive heat, you should be OK. 🙂

I don’t know how I ever missed this little gem of a blog, but I saw it now and WOW do these look yummy! They’re also really very cleverly done and decorated so nice, just like a Maraca. I think that they’re really a cute treat and gift idea.
