There are tons of fun hidden details to spot all around the Disney World parks!
Magic Kingdom
We’ve got a list full of things we like to look for, things like hidden Mickeys, nods to Disney history, and references to outdated attractions. One of our favorite places to check out some fun secrets is Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom, but we spotted something unusual happening on our visit today!
Liberty Square has a variety of historically accurate features to point out to your friends and family on your next visit, but one of the best ones is the sewage river!
The infamous river.
“Sewage river, what’s that?” you may ask. Allow us to explain! Back in colonial times, they didn’t have indoor plumbing. Instead, they used buckets in the house and then dumped those buckets into the streets, meaning that there was a river of…sewage…flowing in the street. Disney has paid homage to this fun fact with a “river” of brown pavement in Liberty Square!
Have you ever noticed?
It’s one of the land’s defining features, but today we noticed something “off” about the brown river — part of it was missing! In the section nearest to Fantasyland, the pavement had been replaced with a new gray color.
Wait a minute…
Now, this particular section of the river no longer resembles the flowing sewage, instead looking like a regular sidewalk. Was it a mistake or oversight? Possibly, so we’ll definitely be looking out for more updates in the coming weeks.

To go along with the River of Fun in Liberty Square. People would open the widow and toss out what was in there bucket. That is a reason men walk nearest to road. Where live stock, wagons & carriages could easily splash those walking. This was to protect the woman they were walking with not get slimed, by placing her close to the building. Chivalry. With all things being equal today. I would be more that glad to exchange position while walking.
The Disney detail, once again, being showcased. I bored family to tears with this information. They come to expect that from me.
I too hope they bring this “river” back. On my brother’s first trip to Magic Kingdom, I asked him. who was unaware of its historical significance, to stand “right there in the middle”. We both still laugh at the memory of this moment. Best photo ever!
