At the Destination D23 Expo last fall, Disney’s Chairman of Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro announced a multi-year expansion of Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District that will add more shopping, dining, entertainment, and green space to the resort!
The exact details of what’s to come to Disneyland’s shopping and dining district has yet to be announced. However, in order to make room for these changes, a few existing locations will soon close.
As part of the preparations for this multi-year expansion project to being, the boutique shop Sugarboo & Co. officially closed this past Saturday, January 15th.
In addition, two dining locations will soon close their doors. Earl of Sandwich‘s last day of operation will be Thursday, January 27th.
The Starbucks West will close a couple of days later, with its last day of operation being Saturday, January 29th.
The second Starbucks location near World of Disney will still be available for guests to grab their favorite cup of coffee.
As of this writing, there have not been any announcements made yet regarding plans for ESPN Zone (which has been used as a shopping event space since the restaurant’s closure) or Star Wars Trading Post, which moved into the former location of Rainforest Cafe last year. Both of these locations are in the same general area as some of the closing businesses.
In addition to the three closures mentioned above, the Disneyland Monorail will close temporarily beginning on February 14th to accommodate the construction happening in Downtown Disney (the Monorail stops at Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park as well as Downtown Disney). The Monorail is currently scheduled to be closed through Sunday, March 6th.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the latest updates from Disneyland and we will let you know if we hear of any additional changes happening over at the Downtown Disney District!

When will normal traditional pre-pandemic Disney Character meet and greets return to Disneyland & all Disney Parks where all guests are interacting, hugging or high-fiving, & taking pictures with all their favorite Disney Character friends up close in person again?
DFB Gigi says
Hi Jason, as of right now, Disney has not released that information, but we’ll update as soon as they do!

Going to miss Earl….
Rebecca says
Why did Earl close? They were always busy.
Tod says
Closing “The Earl Of Sandwich” is taking it too far. ☺️ come on Disney.
Reopen next to Casey’s Corner near the Entrance. Go left around the park with a sandwich. Just saying… that’s a good day.
Marisa and Family from CANADA says
We went to Earl of Sandwich every time we visited DisneyWorld and Disney Springs over past 18 years…best sandwiches, so many choices and everyone was so friendly and helpful….why are they closing?
Is Disney overcharging on their lease or placing unrealistic expectations on them? There is no other place like Earl of Sandwich….It was a family tradition to have one of their epic sandwiches with the brownie, drink and salad….we will miss you terribly!
DFB Gigi says
Hi Marisa, the Earl of Sandwich that is closing is the one in Downtown Disney. The Disney Springs location in Orlando remains open. 🙂
Burt says
If anyone is in a position of power concerning what’s coming to Downtown Disney… how ’bout bringing back The Monorail Cafe? I was upset it didn’t stay when they built Downtown Disney. It was a fun restaurant with surprisingly good food!
Taryn says
Not earl of sandwich!!!
Stephen says
I agree closing Earl sandwich is going too far. You should at least open them a food truck or something to keep going. Not only is this the second time they’ve been shut but this is going to be a long extended one and it’s one of the better places to eat in downtown Disney or Disneyland for that matter. It’s good price ,good food and everyone seems to enjoy it. It is always busy. Come on Disney do the right thing and find room for them.
Teresa Magee says
I hear they are closing. Tortillo Jos. Good food, great staff, fun atmosphere. They also honored AP and D23 member discounts. With Earl of Sandwich and La Brea Bakery going, the magic is gone,
