If you fly to Disney World, the first stop of your vacation is probably the Orlando International Airport. (And if you’re lucky, you might get to hug an adorable pup while you’re there.)
This airport is usually very busy since Orlando has so many tourist attractions. In fact, the airport is currently working on another terminal in order to better accommodate the crowds and flights. It’s no surprise that it feels so crowded here right now: According to one report, the number of flights that will pass through the Orlando International Airport this quarter is up by almost 10,000 from the same time last year.
The Orlando Business Journal has reported that “flights of 12 major airlines flying to and from Orlando International Airport from January-March 2022 were up 36%.” In the first quarter of 2021, these airlines had 27,304 flights. This year, the first quarter is scheduled to have 37,276 flights.
Converting that into seats, that statistic means that 1.805 million more airplane seats came through the airport this quarter than they did in the 2021 first quarter.
The report only included 12 of the most popular airlines in Orlando, including Avelo, Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Silver, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, and United. Of these airlines, Southwest had the most flights in and out of the Orlando International Airport this quarter at 9,018 flights. Spirit Airlines was number 2 with 5,497 flights.
March 2022 is expected to be the busiest month so far this year for the Orlando International Airport. The airport reported that January had 12,476 flights, February will have 11,389 flights, and March will have 13,411 flights.
The total number of passengers coming through this airport in 2021 was 38.2 million, which is a 58.5% increase from 2020. The Orlando Business Journal said, “The recovery of flights to Central Florida is critical to rebuilding the region’s $75.2 billion tourism and travel industry.”

At this point My family and I are now flying into Tampa for our Orlando trips. Enjoying some beach time and good food in Tampa then making our way to our time share in the Disney Area for some park time. It makes it a lot more laid back as far as getting thru the airport and getting a rental car.
