Chicken tenders, fries, hamburgers, and churros — that’s what ALL Disney World meals are made of right? WRONG.
There are a number of unique eats you can find all over Disney World — from spicy beignets to phenomenal seafood. The Most Magical Place on Earth is also a magical place for food, and if you search for it, you just might find some really fantastic eats that’ll take you far away from the land of theme park “standards.” For example, ever thought you’d have Jollof Rice or Braised Beef stew in a theme park? No? Well you can right now, and here’s where to find it!
It’s Black History Month and for the entire month Disney is encouraging guests to “Celebrate Soulfully.” There are a number of things you can do to celebrate Black History Month in Disney World, one of which is to explore some tasty limited time treats!
Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery is serving up 2 “Celebrate Soulfully” dishes — the Jollof Rice and the Braised Beef. We couldn’t pick just one so we grabbed both of these dishes today!
Let’s start with the Jollof Rice. This is Jollof Rice with Shrimp and Sausage (though ours also had chicken in it!), which also features tomatoes and spices. According to the display, Jollof is a popular dish in West African nations.

We loved all of those spices on the shrimp, but we really wish that the spices would have been a little bit more distributed throughout the dish to really pack a punch in terms of flavor.
It is a pretty large portion though, which makes it great for sharing or just a nice, filling meal.
Unfortunately, our portion only game with about 2 small pieces of sausage. We would have liked a bit more to get more of that sausage flavor. BUT we were pleasantly surprised to have some chicken in there (which wasn’t included in the item’s description). The chicken was really good!
If you like traditional jambalaya, we think you’ll really enjoy this dish. There were 3 nicely sized & flavorful shrimp, the chicken was great, and we really enjoyed the dish as a whole. We do wish that there was a more even distribution of heat throughout the entire dish though, so that’s the only thing to keep in mind if you’re searching for those spices.
Want to try this dish? Grab it for $11.99!
Next we have the Braised Beef, which is made with Harare spices and black-eyed peas. According to the display, Disney applies the popular African braising method to this dish and the peas are actually a subspecies of a North African plant!
This was another dish that was really good! The beef itself was pretty tender. It can be easy to overcook things or make them tough or too chewy, so we were really happy that the beef hadn’t suffered that fate.
Our reporter who tried this dish also likes black-eyed peas and they enjoyed the ones that were included in this dish.
There’s quite a lot of onion, tomatoes, and red bell peppers also included in this dish, which added some great flavor to the snack overall! This doesn’t really have any heat to it, just a lot of awesome flavors. To us it felt like a nice, hearty stew (which can be SO perfect for those cold Florida days).
Tip: if you want to add some heat to this dish, look for the hot sauce located near the cutlery, napkins, and condiments. You can totally grab some of that hot sauce and add it in to give this dish a little kick!
Now, in all truthfulness, we’re not sure that traditional hot sauce is what we’d add to this dish. We’d prefer to get more heat from some traditional African spices to really fit the flavor profile of the snack. But hey, if you’ve GOT to have that added heat, know that the hot sauce is there!
Overall, we think this is a VERY good beef stew for a Quick Service location. If it were a cold day in Animal Kingdom, you very well might find us seeking out this dish. But be warned: if you don’t like black-eyed peas, stay away! This dish is black-eyed pea heavy so that might be a bit overwhelming for you.
Want to give it a try? Stop by Kusafiri and get it for $11.99.
Overall, we really enjoyed both of these dishes. And they’re just more proof that you can find some tasty and unique treats in Disney World that stray far from the traditional theme park offerings (you’ve just got to know where to look!). Stay tuned for more Disney news and food reviews!
