It’s not often that a sequel is better than the original film…but Disney has succeeded several times!
Many people argue, for example, that Frozen II is better than the original, but…what do our readers think? We asked DFB readers to vote on 10 different Disney sequels, and one came out as the clear winner. Find out the ultimate Disney sequel here!
We reached out to our readers on Instagram and Facebook (give us a follow on either platform if you want to share your thoughts in the future!) and over 40,000 readers voted for their favorite Disney sequel. Do you agree with this list?
5. Kronk’s New Groove vs An Extremely Goofy Movie
When it comes to these sequels, 11,000 readers were SURE that An Extremely Goofy Movie, the sequel to A Goofy Movie, is superior to The Emperor’s New Groove sequel, Kronk’s New Groove.
These sequels were direct-to-video movies, but they’ve both had followings due to the popularity of characters like Kronk, the henchman of Yzma in The Emperor’s New Groove, as well as Goofy and his son Max. Still, it looks like Goofy and Max take the win!
Did you know you can meet Goofy and Max in Disney World?
4. Lion King II: Simba’s Pride vs The Return of Jafar
Both Disney classic films Aladdin and The Lion King received sequels, and 13,000 readers voted for The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride over The Return of Jafar. Both of these sequels were released direct-to-video, and interestingly The Return of Jafar still remains one of the best-selling movies on home video ever.
Lion King II introduced the characters of Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, and Kovu, her Romeo and Juliet-type love interest, while The Return of Jafar tells the story of, well, Jafar returning from exile. Although The Return of Jafar was very successful, our readers can get enough of the bad boy lion Kovu!
You’ve been warned…here are 10 major plot holes in Disney movies!
3. Frozen II vs The Incredibles 2
13,000 readers voted for Frozen 2 over The Incredibles 2, though technically The Incredibles 2 received much better reviews than Frozen 2! Still, many readers argue that the music and the story of Frozen 2 are WAY better than Frozen. Who doesn’t love singing, “Into the unknowwwwwwwwn!”
Of course, this doesn’t mean that The Incredibles 2 isn’t also, well, an incredible sequel. And both movies have girl power superhero vibes, with Elsa striking out on her own to learn the truth about her powers in Frozen II, and The Incredibles 2 sees Elastigirl step back into her superhero role.
Did you know you can meet Anna and Elsa in their Frozen II costumes in Disney World!
2. Ralph Breaks the Internet vs Finding Dory
In a head-to-head battle between Ralph Breaks the Internet, sequel to Wreck-In Ralph, and Finding Dory, the Dory-centric sequel to Finding Nemo, almost 14,000 readers voted for Finding Dory! While Ralph Breaks the Internet dives into Ralph and Vanellope’s complicated friendship, Finding Dory is the touching story of Dory trying to find her parents.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Ralph is scored at 88%, whereas Finding Dory is scored at 94%, so it seems like even the critics agree with you. You might, however, agree with some of our readers that these are two well-done sequels!

1. Toy Story 2 vs Monsters University
And the ultimate winner of Disney sequels, with over 14,000 votes, is…Toy Story 2! When put head to head with Monsters University, the Toy Story sequel is the crowned leader of Disney sequels. Widely considered one of the best sequels of all time, Toy Story 2 has a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Monsters University tells the origin story of Monsters, Inc. friends Mike and Sulley, while Toy Story 2 introduced fan-favorite Toy Story characters like Jessie, Bullseye the horse, and even Tour Guide Barbie!
Why you’ll NEVER see these movies on Disney+!

Hey, why’d you get stuck on the TWOs? What about Toy Story 3? As much as I love Toy Story 2, I really thought 3 was even better!
For what it’s worth, I do realize that 3 can be rough on more sensitive or younger viewers. But I do think it should at LEAST have been in the running.

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but Lion King never made much of an impression on me. All (animated) things Aladdin, however, are SPECTACULAR.

Monsters U would be prequel right?
And yes, Toy Story 2 is one of the best sequels of all Disney/Pixar. The continuation, the character development, the expansion, even the foley art was phenomenal especially for the time. Toy story 3 was trying too hard to be emotional and toy story 4 just basically threw out everything the first 3 movies built up with woody.
Oh and return of jafar is hard to like. But they gave the king of thieves the budget it deserved and it was a worth while sequel.

Good to see Toy Story 2 did well.
In fact I would rate it higher than the original.
Why? A few reasons, but there is one that does it on its own.
“When She Loved Me” is the most beautiful song in ANY Disney/Pixar movie.
I tear up just thinking about it, and after I submit this note, I’m going to play it.
