Editor’s Note: Tusker House now offers a character meal experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
It’s been a LONG time since we’ve talked about Tusker House, so let’s get down to business!
I consider this sprawling restaurant within Disney’s Animal Kingdom to be one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to Disney World character meals.
Yep — Tusker House is known for its bounty of African dishes, but it’s also a character dining destination.
We have a ton of yummy pictures to share with you, so let’s go!
Atmosphere
Animal Kingdom is one of my favorite Disney parks due to its truly incredible themeing, and Tusker House takes this one step further.

It’s one of the Disney restaurants that doesn’t just incorporate theme on the surface — I could spend hours exploring all of the specialty decor, finishes, and props Imagineers have added to this massive restaurant.
You’ll enter the restaurant through the village of Harambe in Animal Kingdom’s Africa, and Tusker House serves as Harambe’s “open air” market on the edge of the Harambe Wildlife Preserve. The podium for the restaurant was outside during our visit. Once you check in, you have the option to wait at a few outdoor tables that are leftover from the days when Tusker House was a counter-service restaurant.

Also, next door is one of our favorite watering holes — the Dawa Bar. This is a great spot to order up an African Margarita or an African beer while you’re waiting for breakfast or lunch.

Once you’re inside the restaurant, you’ll have a chance to look around and take in the rich detail. The restaurant is a buffet, and the food is set up in the open air market I mentioned previously. But the seating areas are themed as a Safari Company’s offices and waiting areas!

Even though the interior is sub-divided into several dining rooms, windows like this one allow light and air to circulate, and add to the themeing. Check out that carving around the window!

Now that you’re seated, be sure to look around! You’ll find lots of themed wall hangings and authentic-looking signs that will keep you entertained between bites.

This sign listing safari drivers lends itself to the safari company themeing (how convenient that Kilimanjaro Safaris is right outside!) Can you spot the Hidden Mickey?

Want to brush up on the correct Swahili terms for the animals you’re about to see on safari? You’re in luck! This handy sign provides you with lots practice for getting the names just right.

The main marketplace area of the restaurant is a massive, two-story room housing the buffet. The balcony that overlooks the market is laden with fun finds, like masks, fabrics, and more.

And don’t forget to look up! A place with lots of sunshine demands an inventive solution for shade during the day. These lengths of fabric filter light beautifully but still provide protection.

And because we visited at 11am, while they were still serving breakfast and switching over to lunch, there were toasters for bread and bagels as well.

Another fun draw to Tusker House? Characters for breakfast and lunch! Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and their friends delight guests with lots of personal attention, and it’s a bonus that they’re dressed in seriously fun safari gear!

But beyond the characters there are some awesome dishes, so let’s have a look!
Eats
First up, I’ve gotta tell you about the juice!! As I mentioned, Tusker House is a buffet restaurant, which means it’s all-you-care-to-eat for one price. If you wish (and I DO!), you can start your meal with a fun concoction called Jungle Juice. This is a fan favorite, and with good reason!

An exotic mix of passion fruit, orange, and guava juices, this is wonderfully sweet with just the right amount of a tart kick. While it’s part of your meal here, they’ve begun serving it in some other spots around Animal Kingdom, including Harambe Popcorn just outside Tusker House.

The same stuff is known as Lilikoi Juice at Kona Cafe in Disney’s Polynesian Resort; and it’s very similar to another guest favorite, Frunch, which is served at Boma in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. So now that you’re clear on your juices, let’s move on. 🙂
Breads, Spreads, and Chutneys
Because we were there in late morning, we had the best of both worlds! Items from breakfast and lunch were available at the same time! An assortment of bagels and quick breads were still on the buffet while we browsed.

The quick breads here are fantastic! They are so moist and flavorful, it’s tempting to fill up on them. But save some stomach space for the other goodies!

You’ll also find some unique flavors here, like the yeast-based Chocolate Mango Bread!!!! and the Mealie Cornbread, which has large pieces of corn in it. Both are delish and deserve a spot on your plate!

If it’s lunch that you’re interested in, you’ll find an interesting assortment of flatbreads like Pita and Lavash along with lots of toppings and spreads.

Spreads and chutneys run the gamut here. There’s Tabouleh and Hummus from North Africa, Spicy South African Preserves, and Sambals from Suriname. It’s a wonderful tour of Africa on your plate!

Salads
If salads are a favorite for your family, Tusker House offers plenty for the traditional and adventurous eaters. Check out this Apple and Endive Salad!

The refreshing Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Mint Yogurt Dressing isn’t something you’re going to see on every buffet across the “World.” That’s what I love about this place.

But picky eaters, don’t fear. You’ll find familiar favorites, like Caesar Salad and Mixed Greens with Housemade Dressings alongside more original dishes.

Entrees and Sides
Entrees and Sides at Tusker House provide a bounty of beautiful and exotic flavors! I guarantee that you’ll see foods here that you won’t see in other places at Disney, unless you frequent some of the other African themed restaurants, like Sanaa or Boma. Even so, the sheer volume of variety + characters makes this an excellent choice.
Fans of soup will love this hearty Ham and Bean version.

As with the salads, you’ll find an array of sides that are quite unique as well — but there are also familiar options for the less adventurous eater. Love couscous? You’ll have multiple varieties to try, from a Tunisian Couscous Salad to Pearl Couscous with Sweet Basil.

Likewise, there are several varieties of rice, some cold and some hot, so that you can taste this staple made in different ways. You can also use it as a base for some of the wonderful meat-and-sauce or vegetarian dishes that we’ll see in just a minute.

There aren’t many pasta dishes offered, but this Orzo Pasta with Olives and Feta brings a taste of the Mediterranean to the party.

But potato lovers, never fear! You’re covered too, with both rustic Mashed Potatoes as well as wonderful Roasted Potatoes served with a rich brown Gravy.

The Potato and Pea Samosas are very, very good as well. Fans of Sanaa will be familiar with these little vegetarian savory pockets.

And of course, there is a wide array of vegetable dishes ranging from more familiar combinations like Green Bean Salad with an Onion Vinaigrette, to exotic choices like a Casserole of Sweet Potato with Coconut.

There are also a number of entrees that are braised or roasted, including this tasty Spiced Vegetable Tofu.

One of the best dishes to try — and I guarantee you won’t find this one on the menu of Chef Mickey’s — is the Beef Bobotie.
Largely considered the unofficial national dish of South Africa, this savory meat and egg casserole is normally found on the breakfast buffet here, so we were able to sample it during our visit.

Seafood Stew with a sweet Tamarind BBQ Sauce is full of scallops, shrimp, and mussels, and makes a hearty meal when served over rice.

Consistently one of my favorites, Cape Malay Curried Chicken is very good, with its complex and slow-cooked flavors.

I skipped the Baked Salmon :-), but it’s certainly impressive and I bet it would please fish lovers. Keep in mind that peri peri is chile sauce, so I’d expect this dish to have some zip to it.

Ah! And now we have finally arrived at the meats! Tusker House boasts eighteen feet of rotisseries, known as the “Wall of Flames,” where chefs spit-roast meats throughout the day. It’s pretty impressive to see! As a result, you’ll see plenty of meats and poultry on carving stations and in serving dishes.

The Berbere Rubbed Roast Beef is delicious.

But if there is one rotisserie option that you must try, it’s the Kenyan Coffee Barbeque Pork. Juicy, expertly cooked meat is slathered with a rich, sweet barbeque sauce, making for a flavor that’s perfect African-American fusion!

For the Kids (And Picky Eaters!!)
As with every Disney buffet, there’s a section that’s for the less “culinarily adventurous” (I just made that word up) here, too! On the day we visited, we found plenty of sandwich fixings, as well as other kid-friendly foods, like applesauce.

I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite treats here, too: Corndog Nuggets! Look out, kids. I am totally snagging some of these for my plate!

Buffets are such a terrific option for junior diners. The atmosphere is laid-back and un-rushed, and there are lots of options for them to try. If they don’t like one dish, they can always head back and try another selection.
Super Cheesy Macaroni and Cheese (do I detect plastic cheese in there?) is another popular option on the kids’ spread…and another dish I figure a lot of adults are dipping into.

And while there are lots of veggies available at Tusker House, these Green Beans in Olive oil are a nice simple choice for people who like an uncomplicated approach.

And with that, we were ready to turn our attention to sweets!
Desserts
While it was a holdover from the breakfast menu, I had to show you the Cinnamon Rolls, with their thick glaze and rich cinnamon ribbon.

Everything on the lunch dessert buffet was tasty and fresh as well. I managed to leave just enough room for a sample of my favorites.
This Fruit Cobbler is out of this world! I can never pass it up. Today’s version featured peaches and cherries.

The Banana-Cinnamon Bread Pudding is very good as well…and of course, you can snag some of that Vanilla Sauce to pour over or dip other dessert selections.

My favorite offering on this day had to be these little Pecan Chocolate Tarts, though. The rich, decadent, chewy treats were amazing! I totally stole some for later.

Overall
I love Tusker House, and there are many reasons for that. In a place where buffets and character experiences are bountiful, it sets the bar just a little higher with interesting (and delicious) foods and top-notch character interaction.
That unique menu really gives Chef Mickey’s or Crystal Palace a run for their money in my opinion, and it can really relieve some of the theme park food tedium you might experience during a Disney World visit with kids who aim for burgers and pizza at every restaurant.
The menu of African-inspired flavors is varied enough to be interesting, while offering familiar foods that will satisfy the most narrow palate in your group. And with endless options and an all-you-care-to-eat format, you can sample until you find something to enjoy.
And because Tusker House is lesser known than other more popular character dining experiences, it’s much easier to get a reservation to see Mickey and his friends here.
So if you’re having trouble scoring that elusive Chef Mickey’s dining reservation — or you just want something a little more laid back and more interesting — be sure to check out Tusker House. You just may find a brand new favorite.

I just ate dinner, but man oh man, all of this looks so yum! I had no idea it was a buffet – we are definitely adding this to our list for the next trip!
You skipped the best thing on the entire buffet!!!!!! The Salmon!!!! Its not spicy, its fresh and topped with a lovely salsa. I go here just for that dish alone. The peach and apple cobler is yummy, never had the cherry version, but that sounds fantastic.

I’m so glad you reviewed Tusker House! I have lunch reservations but now I am switching them for breakfast. Just looking at the pictures have convinced me that my very picky family would not enjoy the african flavors. So another breakfast it will have to be if we want to enjoy Tusker House!
Have always walked by and wondered about this place, thanks for the great review. A lot of the food reminded me a lot of Boma, is it similar in the choices you get? Would consider eating here in January, but already have ADR for Boma and trying to have a wide variety of options.
I have to say that I agree that this buffet tops pretty much every other one we’ve had. And we were there for breakfast! They had pretty close to this amount of food; such a great variety but all the regular stuff as well if you are not as adventurous. We’ve had Crystal Palace (like cafeteria food), Garden Grove Mediterranean (excellent!), Boma (pretty great selection, similar to Tusker options), Trails End (basic but good) just to give you a comparison.
We are going back there for lunch on our next big trip and I am excited to try all the things you showed on here.
Also, some people already know this but a cast member pointed out to me that all some of the signs are like the ones on Main Street that give a nod to Imagineers. They say Jorodi on a lot of them and if you watched a lot of behind the scenes Animal Kingdom videos like I have, you have seen Joe Rhode (with the long dangling earring) who was the lead on AK and Aulani and is now working on the future Avatar land.
I’ve been to this place twice and love the Seafood Stew! Is that recipe available? I’ve searched a lot and haven’t been able to find it. If you can make it available would greatly appreciate it!

What a comprehensive review with a plethora of great pics. We’ve eaten there many times when it was a counter service, especially breakfast, but haven’t been able to work our itinerary around to try it as a buffet. It seems to have a really great veggie selection, and will be penciled in on our next trip.
It is incongruous and almost bizarre to be eating at Harambe village in that setting in the heart of Africa and seeing sliced bagels on the buffet. I’m still smiling at that.
I have to agree with Nicola! You missed the best thing! We tried Tusker House for the first time on our last trip, and I can tell you it will be added to our dining rotation. We visited for lunch and had a wonderful experience and fantastic food. I am not normally a fish eater, but the salmon here had me going back for seconds!

My main problem now is choosing between the curried chicken and the peri peri salmon…

What time was your ADR for? I just checked out some sample dates and I couldn’t get an 11am. The closest was 10:55… that should work for being able to sample from both breakfast and lunch like you did, right?

What perfect timing for your excellent review! We are leaving in 9 days and have an ADR for both breakfast and lunch at Tusker House on different days as it was one of our favorites on the last trip. I was wondering if it was overkill, but your review reminded me that you can’t have too much of a great thing. Thanks so much for all the work you put into this blog, it has helped tremendously in our trip planning!
We ate lunch here in September. We came close to not going when we read the menu( my wife is picky and we have a 4 and 2 year old). We went ahead and went and it ended up being in our top three meals we ate all week! My kids loved the kids buffet and they LOVED seeing Mickey in his savari clothes. My wife and I both loved the selections offered. THe bar bq pork loin was amazing and the root vegtables with cabbage was one of my favorite things all week. I must admit though I did get some mini corn dogs for my self off the kids menu!! We will be going back next year.

I love the Tusker House. I’m having lunch there again this year. I had breakfast there last year and they have the best scrambled eggs. I couldn’t get enough of the jungle juice.
High on my list. For me, there’s more value to dining at Tusker House than just about anywhere else because the food offered isn’t something I usually eat at home or in my non-Disney life. The cous cous, the mixed vegetables, the samosas, the zucchini and tofu, the salmon, the chicken, ok ok, the mini-corndogs, and the dessert bar — you practically have to roll me out of there.
If you go, make sure it’s at the end of your day. No one will want to go on Everest or Dinosaur or Primeval Whirl after this. Maybe enjoy Tusker House and then take in the last showing of Festival of the Lion King or make a trip over to Poly Beach for some fireworks.

(in the picture, they’re almost depleted, but it is one of the best dishes there).

The warm cherry cobbler and the warm banana bread pudding are our favorite desserts!
We miss the cherry ONLY cobbler they had a few years ago.
The cherry mixed with other fruit is not as good, but still better than most of the desserts in the world.
We just ate there Saturday for lunch and loved it as always. Great food with so many choices. The characters are great and we got a fantastic picture of all our family together.

We just ate there last week for breakfast – we all loved it. Just sort of stumbled upon getting an ADR there and was very pleased that we did! I thought the food selection and quality were really good. As a bonus, we were there at the end of breakfast and my husband got to try some of their lunch dishes as well (I was way too full by that point!) Thanks for the review and all the photos!

Thanks for doing a review on this restaurant. It is refreshing to see one of the more exotic/interesting cuisines get some attention. I grow tired of the reviews and commentaries that seem to cater to families with monotonous and uninspired palates. After all, this is a food blog and should explore the interesting and unusual – not the same old burgers, steaks, chicken, etc. Regarding Tusker, buffets are usually a disaster, but I am excited to give this one a try.

Lisa — Yep, our ADR was for 11am, so 10:55 should be perfect. Re: pricing, the ranges you’re finding are for regular and busy seasons (buffets bump up their prices during holiday and busy seasons). If you’re visiting during value or regular season, go with the smaller number — likely around $30.88. Add $5 for busy seasons.

Back in May I asked for Frunch at Boma, as I had many times before. The waiter replied “you mean Jungle Juice?” I was confused, but said “Ok!” Tasted much as I remembered it from trips past. I didn’t press the issue, so I can’t say what the story here is. I’ve also never had “Jungle Juice” in other locations so I didn’t have a basis for comparison.
Hmmm thanks to you I just added this one to our Xmas/NY stay! I never thought of going there, it seemed to us like a buffet like every other …

At there for the first time since it has gone “character buffet” two weeks ago. Definitely a repeater. All the above comments about the food are spot on. Nice variety and flavorful. You also get lots of time with Mickey, Minnie, Goofey, Daisy, and Donald!
Good review. I didn’t notice til just now that there is a misspelling on the destinations sign.
Took my children to Disney World for the first time over Labor Day – son is 14, daughter is 8 – and our 2nd full day began with a “before the park opens” breakfast at Tusker. It was phenomenal and just another great memory from our awesome trip! I highly recommend the breakfast – though you cannot get Donald’s autograph, you can get Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Daisy like we did!
My family just tried Tusker House for lunch last week, and we loved it! This was easily one of our favorite restaurants–and with all the great food we had, that’s saying something. 🙂 Looking at all your pics makes me want to go back and try things I didn’t have room for at the time!!! My favorite dish was definitely the curry chicken. Delicious!
Tusker House is THE best restaurant in Disney World! My fiance and I always save our Tusker House ADR for the end of the trip so we have something great to look forward to. I am a vegetarian who eats fish so I can always find something super yummy in TH. And please, for the love of God, skip Chef Mickeys and come to TH instead if you want a buffet Character Breakfast. Its the same price and although I haven’t been to TH for breakfast, I have been to Chef Mickeys and will never go again. I am sure the breakfast at TH is 100x better than Chef Mickeys. And yes, that salmon is really, really, delicious!

Two thoughts:
1) Anyone who rights the sentence — This is a great spot to order up an African Margarita or an African beer while you’re waiting for breakfast or lunch — is my new best friend. For one thing, I love Dawa bar. For another, the fact that you used “margarita” and “breakfast” in the same sentence makes me smile.
2) I’m curious: With the open-air nature of the main area, what do they do on rainy afternoons?

We’ve been here for breakfast (once) and lunch (twice – including 2 weeks ago) and we Looooove the lunch! You should have seen how my dd5 devoured the seafood stew. I think you did this place justice with all the beautiful pictures. Even though we have been there before, I missed some of the detail that you captured in the pics.
I would also like to put in a request get the recipe for the Spiced Vegetables with Tofu. It was so delicious!
My friend and I just visited here and were very impressed. Big selection, meats cooked perfectly, great flavors! I’m not sure if they change out their dessert menu but today there was a bread pudding with a vanilla sauce. I think I could’ve drank that stuff! I told our waitress and she said if you like something, tell them (not sure how) and unless it’s a chef secret they will sometimes email the recipe! Haven’t tried it yet though. All in all Tusker House ranks top on our list. My friend’s only complaint:the cornbread was cold (note: it is supposed to be). If that was his biggest complaint I think we’re ok!
Not sure when they started but the breakfast deserts now have krispy kreme glazed donuts. We were there on 6/15/13.
So excited to add this ADR for our trip in February. Amazing pictures and the food looks right up our alley!
We love Tusker House! Last September we had breakfast and dinner there, doing the same this December!
I will say that breakfast was delicious, but so rushed, I felt like they were trying to kick us out the moment we were seated.
Dinner was our favorite though. Everything was wonderful.
Of all places we ate at Disney, by far our favorite. Lots of options and wonderfully flavored meats, spreads. I think they do a great job of being “exotic” without scaring away less adventurous palates. I wish more people would get away from the cheeseburgers and fries and experience this. Loved the simple beautiful atmosphere too. Wish I were there now!
Thanks so much for the Tusker House review. I’m actually considering making a reservation for dinner, instead of lunch, now that dinner will be Character Dining, as well. I love all of the photos (although several have the wrong caption underneath). Keep up the good work, DFB!
After all these years, finally had lunch here today. Wow! This place is terrific. The chicken curry and the pork were the highlights. Simply wonderful. Had a little bit of everything and it was one taste delight after another. The only two items we were not crazy about were the beef (too salty) and the seafood stew. Highly recommended. Much tastier than BOMA.
Do you think a 10:30 reservation will allow us to try both breakfast and lunch options!? I’m dying to try both. Thanks for the great review and pictures.
Rebecca — I’m not sure when they turn over to lunch these days — probably 11:30 or 12 — so as long as you plan to stay a while, you’ll be able to try both!
They no longer give annual passholder discounts. I just ate breakfast there on on may 1st 2015. The discount is not much to begin with but it is something. My family will not return for another character breakfast. If I had known about the discount I would have chosen another character meal spot.
My extended family of 14 is going January of 2016 for our 3rd time. We have already done chef Mickey twice and wanted something new. We have VERY picky eaters in our group. Is there “normal” food fir breakfast as well? Such as cereal and Mickey waffles?

Everything looks so good, but I would have like to see some photos of the breakfast buffet. This was a little meat and fish and a whole lot of breads and desserts. It does look good, though. How much is this buffet, please?
Do you know how much to budget for lunch?
I went on Saturday august 25th 2018, and it was a disaster. Believe me when I say that half of the menu was absent totally from the buffet. It was at 7:30pm and all we had was leftovers. AWFUL, AWFUL. I asked for the jungle juice ( passion fruit, orange and pineapple I believe) and the waiter told me that probably they ran out of it, fortunately mine was the last glass. For 47.00 dollars per person this was a steal …I will never go back , the waiter came 20 minutes after we were sitting. The salads were absent and I saw a dish with spinach that looks it was there all day, I did not even touch it. It was a multitude of people touching the spoons with dirty hands.. In Brazil, when you go to a good restaurant that is a buffet , YOU HAVE TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING THE SPOONS IN FRONT OF THE WAITER, NOT IN THE REST ROOM…THERE IS A SINK WITH SOAP EXCLUSIVELY FOR THAT NEAR TH BUFFET. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS RESTAURANT , IT IS NOT WORTH IT.
