Peanut butter is a pretty big staple in Disney World, from peanut butter pies to cookies to cupcakes.
But, unfortunately, not all peanut butter is safe right now, because a big brand just recalled a bunch of jars — and it could impact your snacking plans at Disney World!
Some Jif peanut butter has been recalled due to salmonella, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The brand’s creamy, crunchy, natural, and reduced fat peanut butters have been linked to a salmonella outbreak in 12 states. 14 people have gotten sick and 2 of those have been hospitalized.
The company announced a voluntary recall on certain Jif peanut butter products. Jars with lot codes 1274425 through 2140425 have been recalled and should be thrown away, the company said. The states that have reported salmonella cases are Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
Even though Florida is not on that list right now, we have already seen some changes when it comes to peanut butter in Disney World. Plaza Ice Cream Parlor in Magic Kingdom has pulled all of their peanut butter sauce from the menu for the time being. Right now, only hot fudge and caramel sauce are available.
UPDATE: As of June 8th, we spoke with a Cast Member at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor who said that the peanut butter sauce is BACK but is not currently listed on the menu in the store or in the My Disney Experience app. So even if you don’t see it on the menu, be sure to ask a Cast Member and see if the peanut butter sauce is available!
We did still see treats like the peanut butter cookie pies being sold over at the Main Street Confectionery, so the recall appears not to have affected all peanut butter products in Disney World.
At Gideon’s Bakehouse in Disney Springs, all of their limited flavors from May were peanut butter based, and due to the recall, no peanut butter treats were available. These included the Peanut Butter Crunch, Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl, and the PB&J Cake Slices. To make up for this, Gideon’s added more Coffee Cake and Dark Coffee Cake cookies as well as the Original Red Velvet Cake Slices to its stores.
UPDATE: As of early June, Gideon’s Bakehouse posted on Instagram, sharing that they are “fully recovered” from the peanut butter situation. For a limited time, they brought back some of their peanut butter treats.
