It all started with a mouse.
And after that mouse came longer, more complex films and animation that have made Walt Disney’s legacy remain in the spotlight for years. Chances are we all have our favorites already, but there’s constantly something NEW on the horizon when it comes to Disney movies. So, let’s take a look at all the sequels, prequels, live-action remakes, and reboots in the works at Disney!
Keep in mind that some of these movies may have been announced a LONG time ago without too many current updates, but we wanted to include them anyway! Plans may change and some of these movies may not ultimately be made, but we wanted to note them here.
Also, remember that movie plans are always subject to change, so some of the staff, cast, and even movies themselves may change or not work out in the future.
Sequels
Toy Story 5
If you thought the Toy Story fun was over, not anymore! That’s right, Toy Story is getting ANOTHER sequel!
Currently, we’ve got Toy Story 1-4, but now another new film is joining the lineup. This was announced by Bob Iger during the 2023 Q1 earnings call, and we’re excited to hear more about it.
Frozen 3
We’re getting another Frozen movie too!
Right now we’ve got two Frozen films, but now a third is in the works, according to Bob Iger in the 2023 Q1 earnings call. We don’t have much information on this one yet, but we’ll share as we hear more!
Zootopia 2
Another Zootopia film is also on the way!
This was also confirmed during the 2023 Q1 earnings call, and we’re wondering if this means that the potential retheme of Dinoland in Animal Kingdom will truly come to be. We’ll keep an eye on it for sure!
Avatar 3-5
Get ready to go under the sea — but not how you think! The long-awaited Avatar 2: The Way of Water broke records with its December 2022 debut. Production hit a rough patch due to the pandemic, but ended up a box office smash!
James Cameron has indicated that Avatar 3 is in the works as well but has stated that 4 and 5 depend on market forces. (Deadline)
TRON: Ares
The opening of TRON: Lightcycle / Run in Magic Kingdom seems to have reignited some interest in the films! As of now, the next installment in the series, TRON: Ares is reportedly slated to be released sometime in 2025.
While the next film was announced a while ago, it seems that the anticipation has only grown stronger with the opening of the new ride.
Aladdin Sequel (Live Action)
Get ready for a whole new world in this sequel to Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake. So far, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are set to be producing the new film, and when it was first announced in 2020, Guy Ritchie was set to return as director.
But, that was really the last we heard about this film!
Cruella 2
Emma Stone has already reportedly signed up to return to the screen as the titular character in Cruella 2. This stylish villain will be back in a sequel directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Tony McNamara (who worked on the first film as well). (Deadline)
Some have shared that the film could begin filming sometime in 2023, but no official release date has been announced.

Jungle Book 2
Mowgli and his band of jungle animals will be back in the sequel to Disney’s live-action Jungle Book. Jon Favreau is set to be involved as the director of the movie.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news at all about this project since it was announced in 2016. Similarly, no production schedule or release date has been announced. Will we see the likes of Bill Murray and Idris Elba once again? That remains to be seen, but we’ll let you know of any updates.
Pirates of the Caribbean (6th installment)
Buckle up, y’all. It’s been a wild ride for this franchise lately. While a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film is in the works, unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be seeing Captain Jack Sparrow in this one. Johnny Depp has previously said he has no desire to return to the franchise.
But, last we heard Disney was working on a female-led Pirates sequel starring Margot Robbie and written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey). We still don’t know much about the project, though Jerry Bruckheimer is set to remain on as producer.
Everything we know about the next ‘Pirates’ movie
Inside Out 2
Disney/Pixar has announced that a sequel is currently in the works for the 2015 film Inside Out! That’s right, Inside Out 2 is officially a GO!
According to Disney, the sequel will feature Riley as a teenager, and there will actually be NEW emotion characters! And get this, Amy Poehler is back! The movie is currently set to release in the summer of 2024.

National Treasure 3
While you may already know about the National Treasure series coming to Disney+, did you know that another movie is potentially on the horizon?! Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said that a script is in the works, but that’s about all we know so far.
In the meantime, we’ll just have to watch National Treasure: Edge of History! This show is centered around a character named Jess Morales who is looking to find out more about her family’s history.

The Marvels
The Marvels is Disney’s answer to a Captain Marvel sequel. We get to see the return of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel in this film, which was originally scheduled to come out in November 2022. That has since changed, though.
You may have already been introduced to Ms. Marvel in the Disney+ series of the same name. You can check that show out while you wait for The Marvels to come out on July 28th, 2023.
Here’s what you need to know about ‘The Marvels’
Captain America Sequel
Captain America is BACK — the Sam Wilson version — in the next film in this franchise. Anthony Mackie is set to reprise his role.
So far, we don’t have a release date for the film yet, but Julius Onah is set to direct the upcoming flick and Malcolm Spellman will reportedly be writing the script!
Deadpool Sequel
Everyone’s favorite unlikely hero is coming back yet again for a third movie! Ryan Reynolds has confirmed his return — but that’s about all we know so far.
No release date has been announced, and as far as we know the film is in the early stages of development.
Indiana Jones Sequel
It’s finally time for us to check in on our favorite Professor of Archeology, don’t you think? Though we don’t have an official title or plot for the next (fifth!) Indiana Jones movie, we do know that it is in post-production as filming was completed earlier this year.
It’s expected to be released on June 30th, 2023.

Prequels
Mufasa: The Lion King (Live-Action)
Can you feel the love tonight, or is it just the buzz about the prequel to Disney’s live-action Lion King movie? So far, we’ve heard that Barry Jenkins is set to direct the film instead of Jon Favreau.
Not only that, but Aaron Pierre will be playing Young Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. is set to play Young Scar (Taka being his real name). Sounds like we may learn more about what went wrong long ago between these two brothers. According to Walt Disney Studios, Mufasa: The Lion King will be released in 2024!
Live-Action Remakes
Peter Pan and Wendy
Finally, a Peter Pan experience where we won’t have to wait an hour to fly off to Neverland! Alexander Molony plays Peter in the film, while Ever Anderson plays young Wendy. The film is said to be in post-production with a release directly to Disney+.
Right now, the projected release date is “2023” — but that’s about as specific as it gets right now. What new adventures will we get to see from Peter Pan & Wendy this time? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature is getting revamped into a new live-action movie starring Rachel Zegler (who you might recognize from West Side Story) and Gal Gadot plays the Evil Queen.
Martin Klebba (Pirates of the Caribbean) is playing Grumpy in the movie, and it looks like filming has generally finished for the main characters of the film. The film is expected to be released in 2024, but no official release date has been announced.
The Disney remakes you’re looking forward to MOST
The Little Mermaid
Now it’s time to go under the sea and see what our old pals are up to in Atlantica in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The film was originally set to premiere on April 8th, 2022, but now it’s slated for May 26th, 2023.
Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King is playing Prince Eric. Personally, we’re looking forward to seeing Melissa McCarthy as sea witch Ursula!

Bambi
While Disney hasn’t made any announcements regarding the live-action Bambi remake, a script was set to be written by Lindsey Beer.
Unfortunately, this means we may all have to relive our collective trauma of the opening scene of the original film (IYKYK). In typical Disney fashion, things are being kept under wraps for now so we’ll just have to keep an eye out for updates!
Hercules
Hercules is about to get a superhero twist — potentially. The Russo Brothers (who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame) have reportedly signed on to produce the movie, and Guy Ritchie is set to direct.
The project seems to still be in the early stages of development. For now, we’ll have to settle for thinking of our dream cast — which obviously has to include Danny DeVito reprising his role as Phil.
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Disney’s live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame remake will finally show us what’s next out there. Josh Gad (Olaf) has signed on to produce this movie, but that’s about all we know so far.
The film is reportedly in development with an expected release date in 2024.
Lilo and Stitch
It’s time to go on another Hawaiian roller coaster ride thanks to the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. What will Experiment 626 get into this time, and will we get to see some of our favorite characters return?
We do know that Dean Fleischer-Camp is directing, but the film is still being developed. Right now, the expected release date is 2024.
Click here to see what we know about Lilo and Stitch!
Moana
It was announced in early 2023 that Moana would get a live action remake, with Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui!
We can’t wait to find out more about this film!
Robin Hood
Watching a certain character steal from the rich and give to the needy could be in our future with the new Robin Hood remake. It was announced on April 10th, 2020 that the film would be released directly on Disney+.
While we don’t have much of a timeline for the movie yet, we do know that one Disney alum — Chris Evans — has previously said that Robin Hood is a character he’d love to play!
Chris Evans wants to play a sexy Disney fox — read more about it here!
The Sword in the Stone
Can you pull the sword from the Stone? Disney is attempting this feat yet again by plunging into a remake of the classic animated film. Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones) was reportedly writing a script, so we can only imagine the possibilities here.
Some have listed an expected release date for 2024.
Tink
Word on the street is that there’s going to be a Tinker Belll ive-action film that will be totally separate from the aforementioned Peter Pan & Wendy flick we’re expecting.
Reese Witherspoon has been attached to the title role and the rumored release date is sometime in 2025, but Disney has yet to confirm details about the film.
Merlin
Yes, we know what you’re thinking — another Sword in the Stone remake? Well, kind of. Merlin is set to be another live-action spin on the classic but will focus instead on the origins of the mysterious Merlin.
Michael Matthews is set to direct the movie, with Gil Netter producing and Chris Weitz writing the script. The film will be an adaptation of T.A. Barron’s novel series centered on the wizard.
Reboots
Haunted Mansion
No, it’s not your imagination — Disney really is rebooting the Haunted Mansion movie, in a way! They’re working on a NEW film all about this classic attraction. This time we’re expecting all sorts of ghosts and spirits from the Great Beyond. The new film will follow a doctor and her son who are trying to start a new life when they find an oddly cheap mansion in New Orleans. We won’t spill all the secrets, but there are plenty of adventures to come.
Jamie Lee Curtis is set to play Madame Leota while Jared Leto has signed on to play the Hatbox Ghost! Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, and Rosario Dawson will also all be featured. The film will debut in theaters on July 28th, 2023.
See the Haunted Mansion trailer here!
Blade
Get in, we’re hunting Vampires. Mahershala Ali is taking up the torch of playing the title character in this reboot, and the film is finally back on track after a brief delay in production.
It was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and then at the same event in 2022, it was announced that Blade would premiere on November 3rd, 2023.
Fantastic 4
Oh, what’s that? You wanted another take on the Fantastic 4 series? Disney is here to answer that call — with Marvel’s help, of course.
It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that this remake would be released on November 8th, 2024.
Big Thunder Mountain
And finally, the most recent Disney movie news we received doesn’t technically pertain to a reboot, but we had to mention it anyway! A Big Thunder Mountain movie is in the works!
So far, we know that Bert & Bertie (who directed a good chunk of Disney’s Hawkeye series) are in talks to be at the helm of what could be the “wildest movie in the wilderness!”
Everything we know about the Big Thunder Mountain movie
There’s clearly no shortage of content coming up from Disney, and this list doesn’t even include all the NEW Marvel movies coming out or any of the series that have been confirmed for Disney+!

Lucille says
Not one original idea, Disney. Out of the 32 prequels/sequels, reboots, and live action I will be surprised if 10 of them make their money back.
Disney is hoping name recognition will get people in the theater.
Come Disney you can do better.
Rick TR says
Not a single original idea.
Denise F. says
Sorry, but I am not a fan of all these remakes and live-action films. The originals were called classics for a reason. You cannot replicate the magic that Walt and the Nine Old Men made. If today’s Disney creatives can’t come up with one new idea, they are in trouble. I absolutely love Disney, but it’s starting to fell like the 70’s for Disney again – in all of the wrong ways.
Janice says
I agree – no original ideas. Is this another way that the Disney Corporation is trying to save money??
The Magic is disappearing faster than ever.
Pris says
Just like the above comments. Disney appears to not be able to come up with an original idea!! It would be better served to use the wasted money making these new flops on improving the parks!!!
Jacqueline says
Casting looks interesting lol
Roberto Lombardi says
Disney is going the the sequel/prequel/reboot route because they’re last few original ideas were not great and bombed. Strange World and the lackluster Turning Red for example (no idea how this was nominated for an Oscar). I think they should put more effort into fresh, new ideas instead of lazy, inferior sequels like Disenchanted. I know they can do it. Encanto and Luca were awesome.
