Let’s face it: Flying can be really expensive right now.
Flying has been kind of complicated lately, with flights being canceled and delayed left and right, staffing shortages affecting availability, and even a bunch of routes being done away with by airlines. On top of all of that, prices aren’t exactly on the low end at the moment. But — there are easy ways to find really good deals on flights, so let’s talk about it!
One of our favorite ways to find cheap flights is through Skiplagged. What is Skiplagged, you ask? Great question! Skiplagged is a flight search engine that claims to show you flights that the airlines don’t even want you to see, ensuring you get the best possible price available.
So, how does it work, exactly? Well, Skiplagged uses a unique algorithm to show you the cheapest regular flights AND “hidden-city” flights. “Hidden-city” flights are flights that are a part of itineraries with multiple legs where you would exit BEFORE your final destination. Â
You see, some cities are major hubs for air travel, so there are frequently flights that have layovers in these cities. If you’re flying through a city like this, you would be able to see the flight options on Skiplagged that would let you stop your traveling in the layover city.
Confused? We’ll give you an example! So, say you want to take flight from New York City to San Francisco. You can book a flight that is listed as going from New York City to Seattle, with a layover in San Francisco, and then you would just not take the flight to Seattle. So you’re skipping that leg of the journey, but it gets you to where you want to go — San Francisco!
You might be wondering why anyone would do this instead of just booking a flight straight to San Francisco? Well, it’s because these trips with multiple legs can actually end up being cheaper! Skiplagged says that you can save up to 80% on flights using their search engine.
But, keep in mind that these “hidden-city” flights are only available on certain routes, so it might not apply to where you want to go. You can always check over on Skiplagged’s website or app!
You’ll know if a flight is a “hidden-city” flight because the final legs of the journey will be crossed off, and the layover location will show up as your final destination. These flights will also be marked as having a “Skiplagged rate.”
So, it’s really quite simple! Just use Skiplagged to check out flights for your next trip to see if there are cheaper options available then you would find through another search engine like Google Flights.
