Each year Disney World seems to announce a whole bunch of NEW holiday treats. Sometimes, it can be hard to find a classic holiday treat that makes its triumphant return annually. This can be a total bummer, especially if you really loved something last year that you were hoping to get again this year.
That, however, has not been the case with the Red Velvet Whoopie Pie. It really has become a holiday treat staple in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and we are happy to report that it is back again this year.
We will say, we have experienced this treat as a big HIT and as a MISS in Disney World. So we were very interested to see how the recipe tasted this year. In the past, it was with red velvet cake filled with classic cream cheese filling and festive sprinkles!
This treat has been around for years now and came back in a whole new way last year. It resembles the iconic and beloved Carrot Cake Cookie, but how does this year’s version stack up?
We’ve had mixed experiences with this treat. We remember LOVING this treat in years past…but last year’s whoopie pie was actually a big disappointment.
This year’s iteration is… different. The large red velvet cakes were light, spongey, and not too dry. But the filling this year is Candy Cane Buttercream. Though the filling was perfectly fine, we love the cream cheese filling that traditionally comes in the past versions of this treat and the Carrot Cake Cookie. There is a hint of candy cane mint, and it’s not bad, but it just doesn’t measure up.
It is a large snack and shareable between two people, but grab your napkins, some wet wipes, and maybe a drop cloth, because this little snack is a total mess. The delicate cake crumbles apart, and if you try to hold it together, you get a nice reddish tint to your fingers (just call that a little bonus).
If you love red velvet, have some fondness for some mintiness, and don’t mind a messy snack, you could really like this one! But if you remember the OG Red Velvet Whoopie Pie and its cream cheese splendor, then you might find this iteration disappointing.
The holiday treats continue with the Red Velvet Whoopie Pie at Backlot Express in Disney’s Hollywood Studios ✨

You can find this over at Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios (aka the spot that also has the popular Wookiee Cookie). This is also available over at Trolley Car Cafe and is often the seasonal replacement for the longstanding DFB fav, the Carrot Cake Cookie. So if you don’t spot the Carrot Cake Cookie during November and December, that’s why.
You can make your own Carrot Cake Cookie at home with this copycat recipe!
If you’re looking to try the Red Velvet Cookie for yourself, head on over to Backlot Express and snag it for $5.29. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this year’s recipe and how it stacks up against the classic Carrot Cake Cookie!
