We have to admit, we LOVE when Disney World’s gingerbread displays go up, like the Grand Floridian gingerbread house that opened recently.
There are lots of gingerbread masterpieces around Disney World and best of all, you don’t need a ticket to check them out. You can stop by Disney’s Beach Club for a gingerbread carousel, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort displays a castle gingerbread! We recently saw the Contemporary display in progress, and now it’s officially completed — and you can also get some treats when you stop by!
You can now check out the Contemporary Resort’s gingerbread castle display on the 4th-floor concourse! It’s right next to the Fantasia gift shop, and it’s GORGEOUS.
We haven’t seen this display since 2019 and we’re in love with all the new colors and details.
The amount of work that goes into this gingerbread display is staggering. We spoke with Pastry Chef Jeff Barnes, who told us that it takes a team of 37 chefs who begin making the dough in July! It’s made with a traditional German honey-based dough that needs to rest for a few months, and then they return to it to add spices and seasonings. They begin baking a month ahead of time and the design is truly a collaboration between the chefs and the Imagineers.
This year they’ve used the same Cinderella backdrop from years prior but this year they added a 50th anniversary theme. The assembly is done in the days leading up to the opening, and they have to bring a crane to the 4th-floor concourse just to put it together!
This is the 11th year of the gingerbread display at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and as a result, there are 11 different hidden 5-legged goats throughout the display as a tribute to Mary Blair. Remember, Disney Legend Mary Blair was the artist who completed most of the design work for “it’s a small world,” and you can also see her gigantic mural on display in Disney’s Contemporary Resort. In the mural, Blair included a 5-legged goat as a reminder that humans make mistakes.
But in addition to staring at the beautiful display, there are lots of treats and merchandise you can grab now!
We saw quite a few treats available…
…as well as merchandise like ornaments…
…and pins. We had to get a few treats, of course, so let’s dig in!
First up is the 50th Anniversary Gingerbread for $5.49. These are baked daily, and they’re dusted with iridescent shimmer and topped with a 50th anniversary white chocolate medallion. We found this to be VERY heavy on the ginger and spices, which was to be expected, but note that ours was super chewy and kind of difficult to pull apart. We love how the iridescent shimmer made it sparkle!
We also grabbed the 5-Legged Goat Sugar Cookie for $5.75. This cookie is an homage to Mary Blair, and it’s also gluten-free! This sugar cookie is made with vanilla icing, blue sprinkles, and a white chocolate screen-printed goat on top. We thought this cookie was very sweet and we would never have guessed that it was gluten-free! We really enjoyed the vanilla icing and the sprinkles added a nice, sugary flavor. We weren’t crazy about the screen-printed chocolate goat but if you’re gluten-free and/or just love sugar cookies, you might want to try this one!
The Dark Chocolate Peppermint Holiday Bar for $6 was next on our list. Look, we don’t want to be dramatic, but this was one of the best chocolate bars we’ve EVER had. Truly. It’s a deep, rich dark chocolate with all kinds of toppings, including peppermint, milk chocolate, white chocolate, and sprinkles. You taste the peppermint first and it’s deliciously minty and refreshing, and then you get the smooth chocolate. Seriously, so good.
Lastly, we grabbed the Family Tradition Cookie Box for $14. This includes a Coconut Macaroon from Chef Jeff’s family, a Sugar Cookie from Chef Kelly’s family, a Butterball from Chef Amber’s family, and a Kitchen Sink Cookie representing all the Cast in the Bakery coming together to bring this display back to us!
The Butterball was covered in powdered sugar, and it was soft and crumbly, with a hint of nut flavor. It was on the drier side but that’s just the kind of cookie it is! Absolutely delicious.
The Shortbread was soft with a hint of orange in every bite. There were cranberries concentrated in the center of the cookie, and they were a nice and fruity surprise. Also a winner!
The Coconut Macaroon was our fave. It was chewy, sticky, and SO coconutty (which we love), and it was overall just sweet and amazing. The bottom was nicely golden crisp, and we didn’t even mind that it was super sweet. If you love coconut, you need to try this one.
And finally, the Kitchen Sink Cookie was made with M&Ms, chocolate, and nuts, and it was a really solid cookie. It reminded us of something we’d bake at home with the family, and it had vibes of nostalgia.
