On a recent whirlwind trip to Disney World, I planned to get together with friends for lunch. I had a hankering for the totally incredible Butter Chicken at Sanaa, so I couldn’t wait to head over there for lunch!
This wonderful restaurant, located at Animal Kingdom Lodge‘s Kidani Village, still flies under the radar. However, in the past, it has been the location of some of my very favorite meals.
And, let me tell you dear DFB readers, it is going to be VERY difficult to edit this review considering how much I want a big ol’ plate of that Butter Chicken right now. I had half a twix bar in preparation, but I don’t think it’s going to do the trick.
That said…we’re off to the races!
Atmosphere
You’ll find Sanaa at Kidani Village, the portion of Animal Kingdom Lodge that’s a Disney Vacation Club property.
The same care and attention to detail that went into the decor of Animal Kingdom Lodge is at play here as well. The soaring lobby greets you with colorful African decor and a thatched roof! I love it!
Once you get to the restaurant downstairs, you’ll see why they chose the name. The word “sanaa” is Swahili for art, and is the perfect description of this beautiful spot that marries handcrafted artisan touches with food that’s prepared with care and tradition.
Sanaa is open for lunch and dinner. We suggest lunch or an early dinner for first timers — more about that in a minute.
The entrance features some beautiful, handcrafted African artwork. The beads that line the podium are gorgeous.
Look closely at the mats on the wall and you’ll likely spy a Hidden Mickey! We have two more hidden mickeys for you in this post — can you find them all??
The waiting area outside of the restaurant features large windows that look out onto Sunset Savanna, the same view that you’ll enjoy once you’re seated inside.
Upon entering, you pass by the comfortable bar and lounge area. Open continuously from 11:30 until midnight, I love this quiet spot for a drink and a bite. It’s a great location for an early dinner if you don’t have a dining reservation.
Rich detail surrounds you. Look up; the ceiling is patterned as though you are inside a wonderfully decorated African building.
In the main dining room, the view above changes to resemble a tree canopy with rustic lanterns hanging from the branches overhead.
One of my favorite pieces in the restaurant is this wonderful Coffee Pot from Zanzibar. The plaque beneath it gives some history.
Throughout Sanaa and all of Kidani Village you see these wonderful African proverbs painted right onto the walls.
Seating is mixed, with cushioned booths and large, comfortable wooden chairs. The feeling is eclectic, casual, and fun.
Be sure to take some time to explore all of the different lanterns hanging from above. They’re gorgeous and offer the restaurant a cozy feel.
And you may have a special friend waiting for you on your table — be sure to check when you sit down!
But a feature that’s certainly worth discussing is the view onto Sunset Savanna. You’ll want to request these window-side tables when you check in if possible.
Chances are great that you’ll have an opportunity to see an array of animals as you dine.
The zebras were clearly the star of the show on this particular day!
If seeing animals is important to you, here’s a TIP: be sure to book your Advanced Dining Reservation for earlier in the day. Choose either lunch or an early dinner. Later seatings might fall after dark, and you won’t be able to see much except your reflection in the glass at that point.
With our wonderful tour of Sanaa wrapped up, it was time to take a look at the menu.
Eats
When it came time to order, I pretty much knew what I was getting. You know how much I’m craving Butter Chicken right now while I edit this post? Yeah, that’s pretty much how much I crave Butter Chicken every waking moment. BUT, I suppose you should take a look at the menu anyway. 😉
While we decided to bypass drinks during our lunch, I can heartily recommend both the Mango Margarita (how can you possibly go wrong with van der hum?!?) and the Safari Amber that we sampled during a previous visit.
If you’re dining at Sanaa for the very first time, you should know that bread service here is not complimentary. However, it is very much worth the price. Choose from incredible breads and accompanying sauces and spreads.
While we chose not to have the service on this visit, I’ve had it previously and could make a meal of it. Seriously, you could easily order three helpings of Naan and I would be totally, 100% OK with it.
Here are some pics from a previous visit to show you the awesomeness of the Sanaa bread service.
Today we were focused on entrees, however (Butter Chicken). The cool thing (Butter Chicken) about Sanaa is that you can be as exotic as you’d like to be (Butter Chicken) — or not.
A lot of people get nervous knowing they’re going to an “African” restaurant, but I promise you’ll find something you can enjoy — even if you’re picky. Just order minus sauces and extras if need be. The servers and chefs are very accommodating.
So, you already know what I’m getting. It’s from a selection of braised items from the portion of the menu entitled “Slow-cooked in Gravy, Simple and Well-seasoned.” Isn’t that a lovely way to explain what you’re gonna get?
To be fair, I HAVE eaten other things at Sanaa, so be sure to check out my previous reviews for stuff like Beef Short Ribs and Shrimp with Green Curry Sauce. But this time it was all about the Butter Chicken and Spicy Durban Chicken. The braised meats come with your choice of Basmati Rice or Five Grain Pilaf.
The Butter Chicken (a.k.a. heaven in a bowl) has a rich, delicious sauce, full of complex flavors. Traditionally made with a combination of butter (natch), tomato puree, garam masala, and other spices, it’s seriously awesome. I think I’m going to sneak over to Sanaa on my next visit and just order three big bowls of it. To heck with the menu.
It was fantastic with the nutty Pilaf. In fact, just ask for a big bowl and dump it all in together. It’s like African jambalaya.
On this visit, I couldn’t help but get the Spicy Durban Chicken again, too. I LURVE spicy stuff, and I LURVE chicken, so this is perfect mix. Something interesting to note: this dish originates in Durban, South Africa — which is home to one of the world’s largest Indian populations outside of India. As such, it’s the perfect place to celebrate African-Indian fusion.
Another winner…
Now, after hearing from so many readers how much they enjoyed the burger here, we decided to go ahead and order the Grilled Angus Chuck Burger as well.
As much as I love a good, traditional burger, this one is a completely new twist! Served on naan (hubba hubba!) and topped with minted greens, tomato, onion, and cucumber raita, it’s the perfect choice for someone wanting to experiment with new flavors while enjoying an old favorite.
Plus, just look at that burger patty! It was awesome.
We also ordered the Turkey Club Sandwich, which came with a choice of Fresh Fruit or Chickpea Salad. My friend chose the latter, and said that the platter was filling, fresh, and delicious.
We were soon ready to end our meal with something sweet. I’ve enjoyed the Dessert Trio before and wanted to sample something a little different, so we took a peek at the menu.
But just so you get the chance to see it, the trio sampler offers a small version of the famous Chai Cream, chocolate cake, and tropical fruit kulfi.
On this visit, I ordered the Banana Kulfi Sundae! It was a bit deconstructed as you can tell…
Kulfi is a traditional Indian frozen dessert that’s similar to ice cream, but more dense and frozen because it’s not whipped.
Served with warm chocolate sauce in the well of the kulfi, and accompanied by strawberries, spiced cashews, a dollop of whipped cream, and a beautiful dried pineapple garnish, this was yummo and refreshing. Note that it’s a small serving, though, so not great for sharing among multiple people.
If tea is more your style, they’ve got your covered as well.
As an avid tea drinker, something I really enjoy at Sanaa is the wide range of loose leaf teas available. With the options of Indian black teas and South African Rooibos options, we see a beautiful fusion of Indian and African flavors.
Check out the tea box at the front of the restaurant when you first walk in. This certainly gives you a chance to make an informed decision — and to try something new. Teas come brewed in a 17-ounce pot — enough to share between two people.
And with that, we were left with fond memories of yet another relaxed Sanaaa luncheon.
Overall
Sanaa remains one of my absolute top picks for dining at Disney World. Due to the nature of this blog, I have to eat everywhere I can so that I can give a good, balanced review of the food on property. But Sanaa really is one of the restaurants I would frequent over and over again if I had the opportunity.
Sure, it’s a little inconvenient, with its waaaaaaay off the beaten path location in Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Kidani Village. It’s true: you will likely need to mark off a few hours if you dine here. But it’s so worth it! The food is phenomenal.
In addition to that, the great care that Imagineers took in creating this restaurant is evident everywhere. The view of the Sunset Savanna — free with a meal!! — is unparalleled. Usually, you must pay big bucks to see animals like this. And don’t forget — once you’re at Animal Kingdom Lodge, there’s plenty to look at and see there as well.
For now, I’ll continue to tell you how much I love Sanaa. AND I’ll be thankful that, because so few folks want to sacrifice park time to get there, I’ll always be able to get a reservation whenever my heart desires it. 🙂

Thank you for the great review! And how timely; my ADR window is opening for the day I’m planning to go to Sanaa tomorrow! I don’t eat meat but my guy does, so I’ll be sure to sing the praises of the butter chicken to him (lol), and enjoy a vegetarian sampler for myself 🙂

I have had two meals at Sanaa and both were outstanding! Try the sustainable fish, it was salmon when we dined last year, wonderful!
Jenn says
Looks awesome! Last time I was there I had the rice pudding for dessert and it was totally NOT your traditional rice pudding. Almost deconstructed, you pretty much pour the milk/cream over the rice yourself. SO GOOD! Highly recommend it.

I will chime in to say that I love this restaurant as well, and also you are absolutely right about the butter chicken. I got it on my second trip to Sanaa recently, and I wished I’d gotten a double portion. DELISH. Also, the red and white sangrias are very good, and my friend raved about the mango berry tapioca pudding for dessert. This is one of our favorite restaurants on property — can’t beat the view.
Rachel says
This is my favorite restaurant out of all of the restaurants I’ve tried so far on Disney property. The same goes for my husband! Last year alone, we went twice during our honeymoon and then again during our Christmas trip. I was intrigued by the menu when the restaurant first opened, but my husband wasn’t so crazy about it. Due to a 3-hour delay at the airport, we didn’t make it to WDW in time to deal with our ADR at bluezoo, so we changed our plans and ate at Sanaa instead since we were staying at AKL.
I knew immediately that the bread service would be a definite try. It is the perfect start for a meal, and it’s really the perfect thing to share and get a bunch of different tastes at once. We’ve tried the following accompaniments:
1. Cucumber Raita – a cooling accompaniment among the other spicier choices, but we ordered it once and never felt the need to order it again because it was very simple
2. Coriander Chutney – ordered it on a whim since the new dinner portion has a choices of 5 of them, and we ended up loving this
3. Mango Chutney – has a nice kick to the refreshing mango taste even though it looks like it’d be mild
4. Roasted Red Bell Pepper Hummus – our first server told us this was one of the most popular, and we ended up loving this too even though my husband doesn’t even like red peppers very much; it’s a good non-spicy choice
5. Garlic Pickle – definitely a favorite as it’s just big hunks of garlic without the overwhelming garlic taste, they’re so tender and especially good with the onion kulcha
Since you can double up on your accompaniments or your bread choices, we now only get onion kulcha (which is moist as opposed to the chewier naan) and papadum (two pieces per order because it’s super-thin and extremely crispy). We can’t finish all of this in one sitting even though we also share an entree, so we bring it back and eat it later that night or the next day. Though the bread might not be as fresh or as crispy, we still love it even as a leftover. The flavors of the accompaniments are still delicious!
We’ve also tried the appetizer Sampler for Two, but we weren’t so happy about the roasted cauliflower because I like mine a tiny bit softer. It just didn’t seem to be that special. We ordered it when it didn’t have the duck but had the lamb instead. Samosas were good but nothing compared to the bread service. We’ve also had the Mustard Seed-crusted Scallops, which were PERFECTLY cooked. I’ve never had such wonderfully cooked scallops before.
As for the entrees, we fell for the shrimp with green curry sauce with the basmati rice. Since we split the entree, we get 2 orders of the shrimp and we split the rice. The server told us to remove the 3 small bowls from the long plate and just dump the rice out on it so that it’s easier to mix it all together. It made a difference once we knew to do that because there’s a lot of sauce to use up! The shrimp was just cooked (hate rubbery, overcooked shrimp) and so it had that fresh crunch to them. We savor every bite, and I even use a knife to cut up one shrimp into pieces. We’ve ordered this during each of our visits and will continue to order it in the future! I asked for the recipe (not that I think we’d really be able to recreate it so well), but they don’t give this one out. Smart move. Keeps us craving Sanaa. It doesn’t look like that much food, but we are always full when we leave but not too full. It’s just enough to still be able to walk off some of the dinner while viewing the animals around Kidani.
We’ve had our server Rico surprise us with the chocolate cake since we were celebrating our honeymoon last May. It was the perfect size for the two of us when we were already full from dinner. It went so well with the raspberry sorbet.
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough! Even when it’s busier, it doesn’t seem to be as hectic as other restaurants, which I truly appreciate. The loud crowds at other restaurants really make it difficult for me to calm down and enjoy food, so this is a MUST DO every time. It’s worth driving out to Kidani or taking a bus from the parks to AKL just to eat here!
Claire says
We ate here for the first time last month, and my husband wants to go back again! We’ve done Boma but when I mentioned the savannah views, that had my husband and 2 daughters hooked. We did lunch too, because I just like the look of the lunch menu better somehow. We enjoyed the butter chicken and shortribs with basmati rice and naan bread. Yummy!! My husband had never had Indian food before but he loved it too. The kids meals were also very good. My older daughter ordered cheese pizza which I believe is made from naan bread and my younger daughter had a grilled chicken breast with green beans and it was tender and juicy, she ate the whole thing!! We requested a window table and the view was wonderful. The giraffes were the stars of our lunch that day, parading back and forth several times, to the delight of my girls. We want to drag my parents there the next time we go because I think they would really like it too.
Thanks for the review!

Sanaa is my favorite WDW restaurant by far, but then I graviate towards Indian cuisine. I love the deserts, especially the chai cream and kulfi.
Chef Trish is the best–5 stars!
Jennifer says
I just mentioned this to you on Twitter, AJ, but I’ll say it again here…It is our #1 fav restaurant in ALL of WDW, even slightly ahead of Jiko….Even if we aren’t staying there, we go anyway…And if we are staying there, we go more than once.
Barbara says
Love this place. Looking forward to a nice long relaxing lunch there again next visit…..

We love Sanaa! We go on every trip and think it’s pretty reasonably priced for a Disney sit down restaurant. I always order the butter chicken like you and the green curry shrimp with basmati. We all like the samosa appie that pairs very well with the tamarind chutney and the naan is the only bread we ask for in the basket, it’s so fresh and tasty! Thanks for a great review and making my mouth water!
Pardonmyfrench says
This place looks awesome. How does it compare with jiko? We’ve eaten at jiko three times. First time awesome. Second time ok. Third time -well we haven’t been back in 2years.
Amanda says
We love Sanaa, too! I wouldn’t be upset if I had to have the bread service every day! 😉
Juanita says
You’re killing me, AJ! I love the butter chicken at Sanaa, and Sanaa is totally one of my favorite Disney restaurants (if not my very favorite).
JoAnn says
I love Sanaa. I had the butter chicken (heaven in a bowl is a good way to describe it) and the beef short ribs. Up until I ate here, the grapefruit cake was my favorite dessert in the World. then I tried the banana kulfi sundae. They’re tied for my favorite.
Mike says
Awesome review. We have an ADR at Sanaa in 5 days. Can’t wait.
Galloping Gourmand says
I don’t have anything to add, other than to plug this place. It’s my favorite restaurant in all of WDW. Food, atmosphere, location. Great, Great place.
Erin says
Is Butter Chicken anything like Chicken Tikka Masala? That’s my go-to Indian restaurant dish, and I looooove it! =)
Also, if we get the bread service are the entrees big enough to be splittable?
Thanks for the review! This place is high on my Can’t Wait List!
Marc says
We ate here last time we were at WDW and boy , oh boy was it good. We were all famished after a busy day at AK so we hopped over here for an early dinner at 5:30 (with the sun still up yto see the animals) and we were quite glad we did.
I had the Durban chicken (which was phenomenal) and the beef ribs while my wife had the Tandoori chicken, which she also enjoyed. My one complaint was the samosas, which appeared to have been frozen before being thawed and fried, but that was a small complaint, given he obvious quality of the main dishes and the naan (which was to die for and quite warm when we got it, as we like) We will certainly return multiple times.
Sarah says
We ABSOLUTELY LOVE Sanaa!!!! It is positively one if the best restaraunts in all of WDW. Bread service- not to be missed! We adore all the braised meats served with rice. And the coffee was outstanding! You are hilarious with the butter chicken by the way! Great post! 😉 I cannot wait to come back here.

Awesome Review! Just made our ADR for this weekend last night and then I see this review! Perfect timing….now just to decide on what to order…..too many delicious sounding options. And I would love to try the tea too!

Love Sanaa. Far and away our favourite at Disney.
Tandoori chicken is flavourful and moist. My most sad Disney dining change in recent times is that the full size chai cream dessert is gone. Fantastic!
Thanks, Wendy

I love the food at Saana but I feel I must comment on the noise level at dinner. I’m sure that Disney has done their best to keep things as quiet as possible with a beautiful woven drop down ceiling. Sadly its no match for concrete floors and screaming children. On a recent Saturday night Saana and the surrounding lounge and corridors were jammed with families waiting for dinner creating noise levels that reminded me of a construction site.
Emma says
The bathrooms by Sanaa are the fanciest I’ve ever seen!
Love Kidani <3
Lottie says
Well I am certainly glad I made an ADR for Sanaa now!
I was planning on trying the tandoori chicken, but I’m thinking the butter chicken may be a better option now.
Is it spicy? I’m not good with intense spice!
marcy says
Make sure to save some bread for sopping up the last of the sauce from the green curry shrimp. It is too awesome to not eat every drop. Love Sanaa !
Megan says
Lottie, the butter chicken is not spicy, only delicious. The green curry shrimp is mild as well.

…I mean, thank you so much for writing this review. After our other plans fell through, my boyfriend and I ended up having dinner here and it was absolutely amazing. Thank you. 🙂

I’ve had the Butter Chicken there but I though it was terrible (made from bad parts of chicken). The naans were okay.
I must say we have in Montreal an amazing restaurant so maybe my expectations were too high.
Everything else we had was pretty good. My husband had the burger, I also had short ribs. The Cream Chai is one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted.
The staff was amazing. Decor is just perfect. The view (animals) left us speechless.
I would go back for the dessert and the amazing view!
Mandy says
So…curious here. The chicken, is it white or dark meat?
Adam says
Curious whether the butter chicken is white or dark meat, as well. Did anyone ever answer Mandy’s question?
Marcos Valenca says
Isn’t chicken always white meat?!

We went for lunch at Sanna today. The food is excellent. Just very disappointed they removed some items from there menu. Please bring them back. Like your Roasted cauliflower. That was your signature appetizer. For all of us veggie lovers. Also the beet salad was the best and it’s gone. Also my favorite the lamb kefta kabobs. All your signature dishes are gone. That’s what Sanna was known for those signature items. So please consider bringing those items back.
Bill says
Great review!
I know this is an old post (I found it after doing a search on the restaurant) but hopefully the comments still get checked.
I had 2 questions: 1) does anyone know if you can order the sandwiches at dinner? I know technically they seem to be replaced by the platter options on the menu but I know my wife has her heart set on that tandoori chicken sandwich. And 2) Do they offer Wine Flights at Sanaa? I think I’ve seen a Sanaa Lounge menu that lists them, but I don’t see ANY wine menu included in the screen shots I’ve seen online of the Sanaa restaurant menu.
Thanks!
AJ says
Bill — They do offer wine flights at Sanaa! Also, if you click this link: disneyfoodblog.com/sanaa you can find a link to the current menus. That will show you whether or not they still serve the sammys at dinner.
Bill says
AJ, really appreciate the response! Great news on the wine flights.
On the sammy question – its more of a matter can “How much of a pain in the butt can I be” rather than a question of menu. I know on the menu the sandwiches are listed on lunch, not for dinner.
I’m just wondering, if IN A TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION, you, perhaps, had a wife who saw a picture of a tandoori chicken sandwich on that great Naan bread with all the fixin’s and agreed to try this restaurant on the strength of that picture, but you then noticed that the dinner menu’s tandoori chicken looks like a platter next to rice that is accompanied by a apricot chutney that she would be allergic to and are wondering whether she is going to be a BIT upset you made a dinner reservation rather than a lunch reservation…if maybe someone had an experience of Sanaa allowing them to get those sandwiches for dinner…(I’ll pay dinner prices, I swear!!!)
AJ says
Bill — Give a call to Animal Kingdom Lodge and have them put you in touch with Sanaa so that you can ask them directly. Usually, if they have the ingredients in the kitchen, they’ll do just about anything for you; but it never hurts to ask directly if it’s going to ruin the meal otherwise. 🙂 Also, remember that if you go for dinner and it’s dark outside, you won’t be able to see the animals on the savanna. Food for thought.
Amy says
Hi! I was just looking at the website and for Sanna it talks about a “Lunch with an Animal Specialist.” Does anyone know what that’s about? I can’t really find out any information. The regular lunch menu is no longer listed. I am wondering if the lunch with an animal specialist is the only option for lunch now (looks like a prix fix for $49) or if there will be the regular menu as well? If anyone has any word about it- I would appreciate a follow up comment! Thanks! Amy

Hey – Kind of a quick question dealing with this portion of the article…
“Upon entering, you pass by the comfortable bar and lounge area. Open continuously from 11:30 until midnight, I love this quiet spot for a drink and a bite. It’s a great location for an early dinner if you don’t have a dining reservation.”
I’ve been reading about the menu of the lounge and it seems it is only appetizers, which is perfectly normal, however, sometimes you can order off the main menu. Is this possible in the Sanaa Lounge? I, like you, love Butter Chicken…. love love love. I’m planning a Jiko dinner and will probably stop by at the lounge for bread service (Jiko naan is NOT Sanaa naan)… but if I can get butter chicken in the lounge, I may want to reschedule when I go to Sanaa.
AJ says
Robin — Since the lounge and the restaurant share a kitchen, I’d be surprised if you can’t get Butter Chicken there. If I were you I’d give a call to Animal Kingdom Lodge and get a confirmation on that!
Bev F says
Hi AJ,
Based on your review I had the Butter Chicken last October when we visited. It was absolutely incredible! I also had the Spicy Durbin Shrimp which proved to be too spicy for me. My waitress, Dawn, noticed that and asked if I wanted to substitute something else for it so I did. Guess what…Butter Chicken! I loved it so much that I emailed Chef David for the recipe which he kindly provided. I make it at home (not quite as good) and freeze it in quart bags so I can pull some out when the mood strikes. But…we will be eating at Sanaa again our first night in and possibly more than once our next visit. I suppose I should try other dishes on the menu but it is soo hard with Butter Chicken on the menu!
AJ says
Bev F — Yay!! Thanks for your review!
Robin Davis says
Thank you for the review! My family and I have a reservation to eat at Sanaa on October 22 at 6:30pm and I am SUPER excited! We will be heading over there after Animal Kingdom closes for the day (scheduled to close at 5pm) and I am wondering how long the bus ride is from the park to the resort?
Marcos Valenca says
Robin, WDW Transportation Wizard says the bus takes 18 minutes from AK to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge ( http://www.ourlaughingplace.com/aspx/twiz.aspx ). But, if you arrive early, check out the resort. Many people find it beautiful.
Patrick Butler says
Love Sanaa! One of the most under-appreciated restaurants at WDW. It has become an almost “must do” every time we visit (which is twice yearly on average). Though not given as much press as the butter chicken, the tandoori lamb is exceptional, especially when paired with the Spier Pinotage (available in most larger wine markets). Of course, the bread service alone is worth the price of admission–seriously, one could make an entire dinner simply out of the bread and sauces, okay, and wine. Finally, Sanaa represents one of the better dining values on property. Highly recommended!
