You never know what’s going to happen in Disneyland.
There is ALWAYS something going on. Sometimes rides get closed for refurbishment. Sometimes entire LANDS get closed to be reimagined. Sometimes, rides just close forever to make way for new ones. However, one of the most surprising things to happen recently was during a performance of Fantasmic! when the Maleficent dragon caught fire. As a result, the show has been closed — but now we have an idea about when it will reopen.
During a recent performance of Fantasmic! in Disneyland, the Maleficent dragon (who is supposed to breathe fire during the show) literally caught on fire. After the incident, the show was suspended indefinitely and Disney released a statement that it would temporarily suspend fire effects at select shows GLOBALLY “out of an abundance of caution.”

However, the fire effect of the Maleficent dragon in Disney World’s Festival of Fantasy parade came back recently. But Fantasmic! in Disneyland remains closed. Now we know that the show will remain closed through AT LEAST Labor Day.
BREAKING: Fantasmic! at Disneyland will remain on hiatus through at least Labor Day.

Not only that, though, the show is getting an update. In a statement, Disneyland said, ” “We are taking this time to evaluate the show and explore opportunities to add new magic and touches for Guests to enjoy.”
Disneyland also stated that visitors who had previously booked Fantasmic! Dining Packages would be notified of the show’s hiatus with more information coming soon on “alternative experiences for guests this summer.”
Disneyland has also notified Fantasmic! performers and Cast Members and are working with them to give them other opportunities in the company while the show remains closed. This includes redeployment and cross-training.
According to Scott Gustin on Twitter, here’s Disneyland’s full statement: “Our goal is always to deliver the best possible show for our guests. With that in mind, we’ve made the difficult decision to put Fantasmic! on hiatus through at least Labor Day. Teams are actively exploring alternate entertainment offerings for guests this summer and we look forward to sharing more soon.”

We have no word on what these alternative entertainment offerings might be, but we’ll keep an eye out for any announcements made by Disneyland. In the meantime, Disneyland’s OTHER nighttime offerings, World of Color — One in Disney California Adventure, and the Wondrous Journeys fireworks show in Disneyland, are still scheduled for performances during the summer.
