When it comes to fan-favorite television series, producer Ryan Murphy has been one of the masterminds behind several.
Murphy has contributed to creating hit shows such as Dahmer, American Horror Story, and Glee. Currently, the creator has been working for Netflix, but an ongoing negotiation with Disney hints that he could be leaving soon.
According to a Bloomberg article, Murphy, who Bloomberg calls a “superstar TV show creator,” has been negotiating contract details with Disney for the past year. According to the article, many of the details were solidified before the writer’s strike began in May of 2023. But, people familiar with the matter have refused to comment”because Murphy’s time at Netflix isn’t quite finished.”
Bloomberg said that Murphy joining Disney would be a “homecoming of sorts,” as he’d be reunited with the creatives who assisted him in producing hit television shows like American Horror Story and Glee.
The majority of Murphy’s career was spent working for Fox alongside Dana Walden, who currently serves as the co-chair of Disney Entertainment. Walden joined the team at Disney when the company bought out Fox’s entertainment assets. Murphy left Fox for Netflix around when the Disney-Fox deal was in process. According to Bloomberg, Murphy “struggled” at Netflix, but found a better footing with Dahmer.
Still, by late 2022 Murphey was already speaking with Disney about coming back. He had actually continued to work with Walden and another executive on certain shows and had an office on the Fox lot. Reportedly, Murphey would still work with Netflix on the shows he has created for them.
While the details of Murphy’s contract with Disney aren’t yet known, and might not even be finalized at this time, Disney does own the majority of Murphy’s catalog, which could allow Disney to buy him out of future royalties as part of the deal.
Disney announced at the Q1 earnings call for 2023 that costs would be cut within the company’s entertainment sector, which led to thousands of job cuts across the company, but was highly focused on entertainment roles. Taking this into consideration, it will be interesting to see the terms of Murphy’s deal if/when he joins the team at Disney.

Was lured over to Netflix like many others at the promise of creative freedom and big budgets…only for Netflix to renegade on both and a realisation that no one will make money from re-runs, syndication, foreign distribution, merch or bonuses if it’s a massive hit.
Netflix has sucked everyone into a tv and film revolution only for it to be built on sand
