Here’s another tucked away snack option for you in Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
You’ll remember a couple of weeks ago when we talked about Hey Howdy Hey Takeaway in the Pixar Place area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Today, we’re taking you straight to the back of the park to find another fun spot for snacks on the go: Herbie’s Drive-In.
The spot is themed after everyone’s favorite little love bug — Herbie! It even features his trademark number “53” and blue and red stripes.
The menu shows a standard list of Disney stroll and eat foods — corn dog, chili dog, a side of chili, and assorted chips and other snacks. There’s a 70s vibe here as well, with the red, white, and blue stars motif — very reminiscent of the Bicentennial celebrations.
And another cool 70s choice — you can get your Corn Dog and Chips served out of R2D2’s head!
Note that many of the items here are available for a snack credit as well.
So since you guys now how much I LURVE nachos and plastic cheese, I opted for some Nachos with Cheese. This is what I received.
Now…you know…this is fine. I mean, everything is sealed and individually packaged, so at least I know it’s clean, right? But to me, nachos and cheese implies that plastic cheese I know and love. And while this was slightly warmed…it wasn’t exactly what I would have chosen.
But I went ahead, opened the chips and placed them in the chip area, and opened the Ortega cheese. It was fine, and it filled that nacho craving. But I wish they’d warn you ahead of time that you aren’t getting REAL plastic cheese.
Another real upside to having your nachos served this way is that you know exactly what you’re eating, because the ingredients and nutritional information is right there to read.
Was I happy to know that my bag of chips contained three servings and my cheese dip was four servings? I’ll let you be the judge of that one. 🙂
With all that salty goodness, I also needed a beverage. A very cool point about this kiosk is that they serve frozen coolers (basically icees.) You can choose from Coca-Cola or Lemonade. I went with the Lemonade (natch).
This is definitely an icee-type drink, a lighter, less-dense-than-a-slushee concoction with a high ratio of frozen to liquid. But the tart-sweet flavor and super cold consistency were just right.
This was a great stop. I mean, it may not have all the cuteness of Hey Howdy Hey Takeaway, but it works for what it is. And I love that they’ve got this throwback to Herbie in an area that also celebrates a new generation of racing car love, with the nod to Cars that you see in Lights, Motors, Action!
So if you find yourself in need of a pick me up while you’re waaaay back in the back of the park, give Herbie’s a try. And if you try the chili dog or the side of chili, definitely let us know what you think!
Have you stopped by Herbie’s Drive-In for a bite or a drink? Tell us about it in the comments!

Ahhh, we got caught out by a similar ‘nachos with cheese’ over at a kiosk in Down Town Disney a year or so back, you’re right, there was nothing basically wrong with them but we were expecting a pile of nachos topped with plasticky cheesy delight, not a bag and a tub and it just didn’t hit the spot. Ah well, live and learn. And yes, it would be nice to see that mentioned on the menu.

You’re very generous in your comments about this experience. I think, having been presented with a bag of chips and a carton of cheese dip that I could buy at any convenience store or gas station, I would have said thanks but no thanks. Knowing the nutritional content would be scant consolation to me, since ordering something like nachos and cheese means I’ve thrown nutritional caution to the wind.

I had that Ortega cheese with a Mickey pretzel-YUCK!! Disney, you should switch to the Tostitos salsa con queso.

I stopped here in May and couldn’t resist getting the R2D2 bucket! I wasn’t that hungry but…the corn dog wasn’t bad (I’ve had better in MK) and I gave my Mom the bag of chips it came with. Probably won’t be heading back to Herbie’s any time soon. 🙂

2 tablespoons of cheese is not a serving of plastic cheese – that’s only enough for about two nachos!

“But I wish they’d warn you ahead of time that you aren’t getting REAL plastic cheese.” made me laugh loudly enough that my co-workers stared. Nice work. 😀

For some reason this just made me laugh out loud.

Is the R2D2 available all the time, or only for SWW?

My nephew would love the R2D2; it’s very cute. I think I’d pass on this type of nachos as I like my cheese very melty. Besides, it’s really hard for me to eat anywhere for lunch in DHS now, other than Starring Roles, because of the cupcakes you’ve ‘burned’ into my brain. =D Snack? Why nothing but Cappuccino cupcakes from Pizza Planet of course! You have opened up a whole new world of WDW cupcakes to me! 🙂

Ahhh the Love Bug Corn Dog. Picture it December 2010 – it is freezing in the Wonderful World of Disney, Everyone is looking for hot food, hot coffee/chocolate and a warm place to get out of the breeze. I had never ever eaten a corn dog and I passed 40 a couple years ago. I actually liked it!
Herbie is another must for the next trip, Herbie, Corn Dog, ketchup on the side – Gotta a problem with that?
Please just warm the weather up next time.

Totally agree that you were really nice with this review. If I would have gotten that I would have returned it. I would never expect to get Tostitos and Ortega cheese. Reminds me of going to 7-11, not eating a “magical” snack at Disney!

I love the astrix after “cheddar cheese.”. Also, I didn’t even know this stand existed.

R2D2 availability now that SWW is over?
AJ says
Lo — The R2D2 souvenir buckets have been available pretty much non-stop for three years, so I’m guessing they’ll be there whenever you are.

Is the R2D2 bucket meal available as part of the dining plan? We have the deluxe plan and the kids would love the buckets, but hate to pay out of pocket after forking over the cost of the deluxe plan.
