Are you ready for some MORE festival fun?!
The 2023 EPCOT Food & Wine Festival has officially kicked off and we’re here to see it ALL! We’ve eaten SO much at the food booths around the festival, scoured a lot of merchandise in the gift shops, and even scoped out the entertainment. And now we’re heading to one of our old favorites — the Mexico booth — to give you the FULL scoop! Is it worth a try? Let’s find out!
Menu
Three new food items arrived at the Mexico booth this year — the Tostada de Carnitas, Taco de Costilla, and Pastel Impossible. We also have two new beverages — the Trouble in Paradise Margarita and Fly Away Margarita. The Mexican Craft Beer is a returning favorite.
Now that we’ve taken a look at the menu, let’s EAT!
Eats
First up, let’s talk about the Tostada de Carnitas. The tostada is made with braised pork on a fried corn tortilla with black beans, avocado mousse, queso fresco, and chives. This is available for $7.75.
The tostada is nice and crunchy, and even though we had it for a while, it didn’t soak up the juices from the other ingredients and get soft. It contrasted well with the black beans and the avocado spread. The pork was fatty and tender, and the cotija added a nice flavor on top of all of that. The whole thing was very savory and very salty, with a good mix of creamy and crunchy textures.
Then, there’s the Taco de Costilla. This yummy-sounding taco has slow-braised beef short rib on a corn tortilla with Salsa de Chile Morita, avocado mousse, and spring onions. Get this for $8!
The tortillas here at this booth are doughy, delicious, and have a great melt-in-your-mouth texture that we loved. The short rib was really tender and the avocado helped keep the taco from being dry. We preferred this over the tostada, but both items we’d order again.
The dessert for this booth is the Pastel Impossible. This snack consists of layers of Traditional Mexican Flan and tres leches with guava and Cajeta. Try this treat for $6.
The flavors on this treat were nice (sweet and creamy), but there were a confusing number of textures overall! The tres leches was too soggy for our liking and the gelatin bottom was very gooey.
One of our reporters liked it, but the other one disagreed — this will probably be a divisive treat with your group! Ultimately, it comes down to whether texture or flavor is more important to you with your desserts.
Drinks
In terms of drinks on this menu, first up is the Trouble in Paradise Margarita. It’s made of Ilegal Mezcal, Watermelon Liqueur, Rosé Wine, Lime Juice, and Agave with a Chili-Lime Powder Rim. It costs $12.50. This is your basic watermelon margarita — refreshing and serene, but didn’t have anything that made it out-of-this-world delicious.
There’s also the Fly Away Margarita. This drink is made of Nocheluna Sotol, Pineapple-Ginger Juice, Chile Ancho Verde Liqueur, and Tequila with a Sweet Dried Chili Salt Rim. This will cost you $13. This drink was probably not one we’ll be ordering again — it stung going down and had a really bad aftertaste.
The last beverage offered here is Mexican Craft Beer. This beer is a Tulum Artisanal Lager with citrus notes and made with Mexican Caribbean seawater. It’s $5.50 for a 6oz and $11 for a 12oz.
This is actually the only returning item for this booth. We’ve seen this one in Mexico before. When we’ve had this beer in the past, we thought it tasted pretty basic. It’s a smooth Mexican lager that we think beer drinkers will enjoy, and a solid choice for anyone who isn’t looking for their beverage to be too sweet or too adventurous.
OVERALL
Overall, we really enjoyed both the taco and tostada here, but that dessert is a hit or miss, depending on your texture preference. The drinks here aren’t must-gets in our opinion. Typically, Mexico is one of our absolute favorite booths — but where does it stand this year?
Unfortunately, Mexico probably isn’t ranking in our top three this go-around, although the food here is still pretty decent. It just didn’t knock our socks off the way that it has done in the past. Altogether, we recommend stopping by…but you might like somewhere else a little bit better.
It’s time…MEXICO! 🙌
We got not one, but TWO margaritas! The first is the Fly Away (pineapple and ginger flavors with tequila) and the second is the Trouble in Paradise (mezcal & watermelon) 🍹
