If you’re a burger and shakes kind of person, we’ve got a review for you!
Okay, so, yeah, the standard Disney theme park burger might not be all that, but there is a place in Downtown Disney (in Disneyland) where you can get a burger and a shake with a little something more — in fact, the shakes are usually a WHOLE lot more. Yep, we’re headed to Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes to have a burger, as well as Black Tap’s newest over-the-top shake.
Although the menu has other items, like we said, the Black Tap menu is all about burgers and shakes.
We were invited to a media preview to check it all out, so let’s start with what we’re mostly here for: the new CrazyShake! This is the Freeform 31 Nights of Halloween Graveyard CrazyShake. Y’all, this thing really is something.
It’s a mud pie milkshake with a chocolate frosted rim with orange and black sprinkles, topped with an M&M cookie pie, gravestone cookie, crumbled Oreo, gummy worms, whipped cream, orange and black sprinkles, and chocolate shavings for $26. That’s pretty pricey for a shake, but when you think about all the desserts that are loaded on top, it’s definitely more than your average milkshake.
That is A WHOLE LOT GOING ON. The shake itself, though, is VERY chocolatey, which we LOVED (only chocolate lovers need apply). However, there are also chunks of Oreo in it because WHY NOT?
Although this thing is intimidating to eat, we dug into the toppings. The cookie is surprisingly light with a nice vanilla flavor that works great with the chocolate shake. The M&M’s and sprinkles add a nice extra crunch and additional chocolate flavor.
The brownie is SO RICH with a nutty aftertaste — but it is SO thick, which makes it kind of hard to eat. The gummy worms with the chocolate shake give it almost a worms-in-dirt flavor. Okay, at this point, we’ll admit that we’re on a sugar high! Woo!
So we’re not sure this shake is worth the $26 price tag, though — although it’s good and it’s a LOT, there are still lots of less expensive desserts you can grab in the parks. If you want to try it, note that it’s only available through October 31st.
But we were just getting started because we also got to check out some food from the regular menu.
For our appetizer, we chose the Fried Pickles with House Buttermilk-Dill dipping sauce for $11. If you love pickles, ORDER THIS. The sweetness of the pickle mixed with a nice fried crunchy texture. It’s simple, but it works. The breading on these things — all we can say is YUM. It’s light and fluffy.
The sauce is different from the usual Ranch sauce you get with fried pickles. It’s nothing super unusual, but it does complement the fried pickle flavors, so it serves its purpose well. Again, it’s a simple appetizer, but sometimes the simplest things are the best and that’s the case here. This appetizer also comes with a parsley garnish that adds an additional bit of flavor.
Finally, it was time to dive into a burger. We got The Old Fashioned, which is made with Prime Burger, Crimini Mushrooms, Swiss Cheese, Caramelized Onion, and Horseradish Sauce, served with Lettuce, Tomato, a Pickle, and French Fries for $21.50. We asked for our burger to be cooked Medium.
This is a rustic burger, but the burger itself was a little drier than we would’ve liked, although the tomato helps a little with that. The mushrooms, though, are SO good, and have a ton of flavor, especially mixed with the Swiss cheese and onions.
The flavor of this burger is very earthy, so if you’re looking for something like a more standard fast-food burger, this is not it. We liked that this burger is made with solid ingredients and although it seems expensive, we think it’s worth what you get.
Don’t ignore the horseradish that’s served on the side — it really elevates the burger’s flavor by giving it a bit of a kick, as well as some sauciness.
