We’re having a hard time deciding what we love most about Disney’s newest holiday party, Jollywood Nights in Hollywood Studios.
Could it be the glamorous holiday decorations? The variety of Christmas celebrations, from a Muppets holiday variety show to a jazzy, Hollywood soiree? Or is it the food?
Ok, ok, it’s probably the FOOD (but we can never turn down a good Muppet experience).
Tonight, we headed over to the ABC Commissary to experience the Holiday Fiesta en la Calle! The unique offerings here embrace the spirit and culture of the Hispanic influence infused throughout California with some truly mouth-watering options! Let’s see what they have in store!
Chicken Empanadas with Street Corn
First up is the Chicken Empanadas with Street Corn. This dish includes chicken empanadas served with a side of street corn salad topped with chili peppers, lime, and cotija cheese.
An empanada is a type of baked or fried turnover consisting of pastry and filling. These can contain sweet fillings like fruit or custard to be like dessert or savory fillings like meat, veggies, and spices for more of a snack or entree style. Here, Disney definitely went savory, and with all of the sugary frosting that typically coats the holidays, we’re here for it!
By the time we made it in line for these tasty Mexican treats, they were all out of the street corn, so they gave us an extra empanada to make up for it. The empanadas were delicious and our favorite of the two savory items we had here. There’s a slight kick of spice that builds up as you eat them. We wish we could have tried the corn, but maybe they’ll make extra for the next events!
You can grab this dish at ABC Commissary for $6.29.
Yuca con Chicharrón
Next, let’s try the Yuca con Chicharrón. A fried pork belly, yuca, red pickled onions, and chili pepper-lime seasoning with a yellow pepper aïoli.
Think of this option as an elevated take on the classic snack food, pork rinds. The pork belly is deep-fried to a crispy, puffy state and the zesty toppings of pickled red onions and heat from chili season add a complexity to the crunchy, fatty finger food.
Even after being fried to a crisp, the pork belly is super soft and cuts easily. We were very happy that it was cooked so perfectly. All around, we would say this item could do with a bit more seasoning to really enhance the flavors. But the aioli was a hit; definitely the best thing on the plate. It even adds a bit of heat.
You can grab this dish at ABC Commissary for $5.79.
Tembleque
Ready for something sweet? ABC Commissary has some options for that sweet tooth, too. Like the Tembleque, a coconut rice pudding with caramel rum sauce and cinnamon.
A tembleque is a traditional pudding from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean that is a thickened not-too-sweet coconut dessert, typically scented with cinnamon and the subtle undertone of lime.
Unfortunately, this was our least favorite item from this spot. While we expected it to taste of coconut, we found it to be rather bland. It was lacking much flavor at all, which was pretty disappointing. Maybe those who really enjoy rice pudding would like this, but it wasn’t our cup of tea.
The name tembleque means wiggly, referring to a slight wiggle when the pudding is shaken.
Mexican Hot Cocoa Cheesecake
Is it even the holidays if you haven’t had a steaming cup of hot chocolate? Well, Jollywood Nights put its own twist on this traditional beverage with the Mexican Hot Cocoa Cheesecake.
This is a spiced chocolate cheesecake on a chocolate cookie base topped with vanilla whipped cream and cocoa powder with a chocolate handle.
This was so good! The whipped cream is AMAZING. There is so much cinnamon flavor in it, loved it. The cheesecake itself was actually kind of lost to the wonderful flavors of the whipped cream and the chocolate crust. But we aren’t complaining because they were both delicious. We would definitely recommend this dessert.
You can grab this dessert at ABC Commissary for $5.29.
You’ve had your savory snacks, you’ve had some desserts, not it’s time for tasty beverages! ABC Commissary has a few zero-proof options for the kiddos or the non-drinkers at the party, as well as a classic cocktail that they gave an indulgent holiday twist to.
Mangonada
The first non-alcoholic option we tried was the Mangonada. This is a frozen mango beverage with mango-chili pepper-lime sauce and chili pepper-lime seasoning on top. It has promise, but does it rise to its potential?
We would say, yes! This yummy mango drink was tasty. We noticed lots of mango with not too much spice. If you’re really sensitive to spice, it could maybe be there, but we didn’t notice it. It was just a delicious frozen mango drink!
You can grab this drink at ABC Commissary for $5.99.
Zero-Proof Piña Colada
If you want that fancy cocktail vibe, without the spice of the Mangonada and without the alcohol, then the Zero-Proof Piña Colada might be the drink you’re looking for. It is a tropical blend of Lyre’s Spiced Cane Spirit, coconut, pineapple, and lime.
This is not your traditional holiday beverage, but when you’re celebrating the holidays in Florida, there are no rules.
We found this to be very creamy and we found the coconut flavor we were missing in the rice pudding. We didn’t notice much spice, which is probably a good thing if you’re looking for a rich, coconut, cold beverage.
You can grab this drink at ABC Commissary for $7.49.
So, we’ve sipped, savored, nibbled, and delighted over the holiday treats at ABC Commissary during the Jollywood Nights event and let you know which of these menu items are worth a detour in your party plans to snag, and which ones you may want to pass on for other party options.
