Welcome back new Disney Food Blog author Wendy with a peek at a brand new addition to the Epcot France Pavilion!
Finding new treats at Walt Disney World is one of my favorite pastimes. Today, I can’t wait to share a new ice cream sandwich with you!!
Atmosphere
I love walking up to L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France Pavilion, especially at twilight. The lights glow like a glittering beacon drawing you towards pure ice cream goodness.
Eats
Perhaps you’ve sampled one of their sixteen flavors of homemade ice cream and sorbets.
Well, there is already something new to love. And that’s LOVE with a capital L-O-V-E.
It’s the Chocolate Macaron Sandwich.
The chocolate macaron is made in the same kitchen where all of the deliciousness at Boulangerie Patisserie Les Halles is created. The chocolate ice cream, of course, is crafted right there at L’Artisan des Glaces.
I adore the French “newspaper” wrapping the sandwich. It’s so cute!
At first I was disappointed that I’d forgotten to grab a knife from Les Halles so I could cut the sandwich in half to show you the cross section. It was a warm evening, and I knew I risked the ice cream melting if I took time to grab one.
I mean it — this had nothing to do with losing all willpower and not being able to wait for that first bite any longer. Absolutely nothing. 😉
However, I hope you can learn a lot about the sandwich from the picture that I managed to get.
Can you see the way the macaron is the slightest bit crumbly from that first bite on the outside, yet completely soft inside? It’s just perfect. This, combined with the rich creaminess and the chill of the chocolate ice cream… well, let’s just say sweet lovers may have a new snack to rotate among their Epcot favorites. (Now, this doesn’t mean we love you any less, School Bread. Please try to understand… 😉 )
The Macaron Sandwiches are premade then chilled, so currently it only comes in chocolate. I don’t know if there are any plans to add any other flavor options. I also don’t know that I would change my selection if other flavors were offered. This is double chocolate perfection exactly the way it is.
Since this treat is so new, it isn’t listed on the price menu yet. But the sandwich costs the same as one scoop of ice cream ($3.99, coming to $4.25 with tax). Totally worth it.
Overall
Just when we thought that France couldn’t possibly add one more tasty and decadent treat to its already overflowing list (Crème Brulée! Éclairs! Apple Tarts! Chocolate Domes! Croissants! Napoleons!), they bring us this.
Well played, France! Well played.
What’s your favorite treat in the France pavilion? Have you sampled the ice cream at L’Artisan des Glaces? Tell us your preferred flavor!

Wow. L’Artisan des Glaces had already become one of my favorite WDW locations for a snack, but now I’m even more ecstatic to return there in a month. What a fun creation – and perfectly fitting for the France pavilion!
It’s exciting to see more macarons popping up in WDW. Personally, I’ll take a good macaron over a cupcake any day. 🙂

That looks absolutely incredible! I can’t wait to taste it in 18 days! 🙂 I can’t imagine choosing another flavor myself, double chocolate looks amazing!

I’m not a fan of meringue, and macaron usually seem to be little more than a tasteless delivery system for buttercream or ganache. Don’t think I’ll try this…but the ice cream looks good!

I’m not usually a fan of macaroons but I would definitely be willing to try this!

My husband spent all last winter making macarons in every flavor imaginable, so he is over the moon excited to taste these. Two years ago he spent about 45 minutes talking to the CM in France about all the reasons why macarons are amazing. The cast member said that they couldn’t believe that macarons were not sold in Epcot France, because they are a staple where she is from. The assumption was because of the humid Florida air, macarons would be difficult to make. I hope they are as good as they look!
Thanks

I missed seeing this restaurant, but that looks amazing!

Do you know if it’s gluten free? Macarons generally are…
Gabriella says
I LOVE French macarons!! They are definitely gluten-free @Heather because there are only 3 ingredients: egg whites, almond flour and sugar. They are different from North American macaroons in that they don’t contain coconut.

I have never been able to eat an ice cream sandwich at WDW (grain allergies) – now I will be able to. AWESOME.
Josh says
Does this count as a DDP snack credit?

I haven’t even been to the new French shops yet, but I can’t wait to get there on my 2014 trip. These great reports are making my mouth water just thinking about it. I also want to have lunch and get to meet Remy soooooo much that I can’t stand the wait.

It looks yummy. I’m not usually a fan of macarons because I don’t like egg whites/meringues, but I’ll give these a try the next time I’m in Epcot. I’ve tried two flavors there: the profiterole, and the caramel fleur de sel. I thought the former was very nice, but not my thing, and the latter was wonderful! My husband tried the caramel fleur de sel on my recommendation, and he felt the way I did about the profiterole. So that just means that he has to try a different flavor next time! With 16 flavors from which to choose, I’m sure he’ll find a favorite the way I did!

Josh — Yes — I double checked today, and they do count as a DDP snack credit.

Had one tonight. Wow, it’s yummy.
Isabel says
They have added a Strawberries and Cream Version ( strawberry macaron with vanilla bean and strawberry sorbet inside). It is AMAZING!!
AJ says
Hi Isabel! We had a news post about the Strawberries and Cream Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich a few weeks ago! 🙂 The folks in France debut a new macaron sandwich for each season/holiday.
