If you’re flying to Disney World, we’ve got a heads-up for you.
There are a lot of reasons that flights get delayed to Orlando International Airport. Most recently, some flights were impacted due to a plane part needing inspection. Weather is probably the biggest cause of delays. But did you know that something like a solar eclipse — like the one we’ll see on April 8th in the U.S. — could also impact travel? Well, it can!
The FAA has issued a warning that SO many people are going to be traveling to see the solar eclipse in the zone of the country where it will appear in totality that it could cause flight issues and delays. Yeah, it’s THAT big of a deal, apparently.
The eclipse will pass over Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. The FAA has posted a notice to “inform airmen of the possible impacts to air traffic and airports along the eclipse path” from April 7th through April 10th. Considering that this period also overlaps spring break travel, things might be VERY busy at airports during that time.
The FAA issued a statement that aircraft “should be prepared for potential airborne holding, reroutes, and/or Expect Departure Clearance Times (EDCTs) that may be issued for all domestic IFR arrivals and departures.” Yep, that could mean significant delays. The FAA also encouraged airports in the eclipse path to “coordinate their departure times as early as possible.”
The FAA is expecting higher traffic than normal at those airports. It also warned that parking may be limited at these airports, too, especially the smaller airports along the eclipse’s path.
So if you’ve got flights scheduled during this time, you’ll want to be extra patient and make sure you’re prepared for delays. Even if you’re not flying to airports in the eclipse’s path, delays there could cause delays elsewhere. You’ll want to download your airline’s mobile app and have it set to send you notifications in case there are changes to your flights.
