Wow — can you believe it? Spring is almost over and summer is right around the corner, along with the month of May.
It seems like SO much has already happened in Disney World this year, but we’re ready for what summer will bring. We’re talking about the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the reopening of Country Bear Jamboree. We’re also hoping we’ll see The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers finally get an opening date this summer, along with the East Coast version of Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs. But if you’re visiting Disney World in May, we have to warn you not to make a vital mistake.
Okay, technically, there are several mistakes you could make if you’re visiting Disney World in May. So we’re going to tell you about them.
Underestimating the heat and humidity
We’ve got some bad news about the weather in Disney World in May. It’s going to start getting hot, y’all. But not just hot. It’s also going to get VERY humid, which means you’ll step outside and immediately start sweating. We always warn folks coming to Disney World to prepare for the weather, and we’re very serious about preparing for summer weather.
It can be brutal, but you can be prepared by making sure you stay hydrated (keep a water bottle handy and don’t forget to ask for free water at the parks). You’ll also want to pack weather-appropriate clothes (leave the sweaters at home) and load up on the sunblock. Cooling towels and neck fans can also come in handy. Also, plan to take breaks during the day where you can sit somewhere indoors to cool off. Better yet? Head back to your hotel and hop in the pool for an hour or two.
5 Disney World ESSENTIALS You’ll Need for Your Summer Trip
Not checking the refurbishment and closure schedule
We always tell you to keep an eye on the Disney World calendar because some rides and restaurants could be temporarily closed during your trip for refurbishment. You don’t want to make plans for something and then get to Disney World only to realize it’s closed.
You can check the Disney World website for every day of your trip to see if anything is going on that day. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for early park closures, which do occasionally happen.

Missing the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival
If you plan on checking out the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival in May, you’ll have to visit early because the festival is ending earlier than usual this year, on May 27th. You’ll want to keep that in mind if the festival is a priority.
There is SO much to do at the festival, including a scavenger hunt, gardens, topiaries, outdoor food kitchens, and more. You don’t want to miss out!

Missing the Disney Dreams that Soar Drone Show
A brand new drone show is coming to Disney Springs called “Disney Dreams That Soar.” It’s inspired by Disney stories and will create designs in the sky to a musical score that will also include some of Disney movies’ most memorable quotes.
The show will take place on the West Side of Disney Springs and starts on May 24th as a late night perk, so if you’ll be visiting then, you might want to plan to sleep in a little the next day.

Visiting during Memorial Day weekend
Sure, it might seem like a good idea to visit Disney World over Memorial Day weekend. It’s a long holiday weekend when you’re off work and there’s no school, making vacation time a little easier for the whole family. But you will likely get met with HUGE crowds thinking the same thing.
Another reason to avoid Memorial Day weekend in Disney World is the price of Genie+. The price of Genie+ goes up when Disney expects more demand for it, and we’ve seen pretty high Genie+ prices during previous Memorial Day weekends.

Visiting during dance competition weekends
You need to be aware of things like cheerleading and dance competitions in Disney World. Why? Well, those competitions bring a LOT of extra people to the parks. Also, if you’re staying at one of Disney’s All-Star Resorts, you may suddenly find yourself surrounded by dance teams who get up early to practice their routines outside your hotel room.
These events are scheduled to take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports May 2nd through 5th and May 10th through 12th.Â
