After Disney struck gold with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, we knew more ride-based movies HAD to be in the works.
And sure enough, we got a Jungle Cruise movie in 2021 (that we thought was actually pretty entertaining). Then, of course, there was a second Haunted Mansion movie (which was…well, okay). Well, now, Disney has decided to take things even further with another ride-based movie, but this time, we’re scratching our heads as to how that ride will translate into a film.
In 2020, we reported that a new Space Mountain movie was in the works. Yep, we’re talking about the ride that literally shakes every bone in our body in Disney World (granted, it’s a smoother experience in Disneyland). The ride that has NO kind of story or theme whatsoever except that you’re in a rocket hurtling through space. Somehow, that will be made into a movie.
Anyway, at the time Joby Harold was tapped to write the script. However, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec will be in charge of the script for the Space Mountain movie. The pair were showrunners for Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop series and Amazon’s Citadel series. Harold is still involved with the project as a producer, along with Tory Tunnell and Jonathan Eirich. Ryan Halprin is serving as executive producer.
It will be interesting to see what kind of story the team comes up with for a ride that doesn’t really have a theme. In fact, during the spring, Disneyland’s version of Space Mountain becomes Star Wars-themed as Hyperspace Mountain (arguably the better version of the ride).
We’ll keep an eye out for more news about the Space Mountain movie, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

Ryan says
I was writing a story for my second grade class, in the vein of Tomorrowland, where a boy gets on Space Mountain when a freak storm happens and lightning hits the ride. The boy is transported into the future, to another planet.
