If you’ve ever wanted to live inside a Pixar film, now’s your chance.
Airbnb has launched a new program known as Icons series. These 11 locations around the world “take you inside worlds that only existed in your imagination—until now. According to Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky, the reasoning behind the promotion was, “As life becomes increasingly digital, we’re focused on bringing more magic into the real world. With Icons, we’ve created the most extraordinary experiences on Earth.” One of those “extraordinary experiences” is a real-life recreation of one of Pixar’s most beloved animated locations.
Pixar’s 2009 film Up – often hailed as one of the studio’s best – revolves around the character of Carl Fredricksen going on a globe-spanning adventure after the death of his beloved wife Ellie. One of the key elements of the film is Fredricksen’s home, which Carl famously attaches thousands of balloons to in order to fly off towards said adventure. Now, that iconic animated house has been recreated in the real world!
The Up house, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is highly detailed inside and out. The exterior captures the angular look of the house, and even features the balloons tied to the top! (The house was even lifted in the air and lowered into place, though via crane not balloon).
Inside, the house recreates the film in adorably intricate detail. The most iconic spot – Carl and Ellie’s side-by-side chairs that heartbreakingly transition to Carl alone during the film’s moving opening montage – is faithfully recreated, complete with Carl’s cane.
The home’s fireplace looks spot-on, complete with photos, knick-knacks…
… and Ellie’s painting hanging above it.
Speaking of Ellie, of course the house features a reproduction of her iconic scrapbook from the film, right down to the black feather.
Even the kitchen is faithfully recreated, right down to the Bran cereal sitting on the table.
As noted, the Up house is just one of eleven different Icon series locations around the world. Others include a reproduction of Headquarters from the upcoming Inside Out 2, Prince’s Minnesota mansion from Purple Rain, and full-scale replica of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters from X-Men’97, complete with the Danger Room training facility, bedrooms themed to Jubilee and Wolverine, and a Sentinel head on the front lawn. Some are even real locations including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy.
Any potential Airbnb user can request to stay in one of the Icon locations which are free or under $100, but stays are limited to “lucky guests” who receive one of 4,000 digital golden tickets. Stay tuned to DFB for more exciting travel news.
