WHAT is going on with this Disney World souvenir trend??
When we noticed this trend in the Disney World theme parks, half of our team reacted with, “WHAT are those people DOING?” and the other half were like, “Why didn’t I think of that?!” It’s a divisive trend, to say the least, and we need your help in deciding whether it’s absolutely ridiculous or completely genius.
Recently, people have started taking these $80+ Disney World souvenirs and…cutting them up. They’ll drop some serious cash and then take a pair of scissors to the item immediately. WHAT?
OK, let’s back up. So the new trend is that people are altering their Disney Spirit Jerseys — those long-sleeve shirts that have the dropped shoulder and usually big puffy letters across the back — by cutting off some of the sleeves and the bottom part of the shirt.
You can check out a few videos of the process here, where people chopped up their Spirit Jerseys to create short-sleeved, crop top shirts.
@brithejedi Cutting up Spirit Jerseys all summer long 🤪✨🫶🏻 @Emma Wynnae #disney #disneygirl #disneyworld #spiritjersey #wdw
They’re not all super short cropped tees. Some of the shirts are just trimmed a bit, but the original Spirit Jersey design has such a long torso that you can really choose any length you want.
@wanderwithapril Thank you @Bri Harris 🖤 for inspiring me to FINALLY do this!!!! Which one should I do nect?! Im obsessed! I’ve always said they should make them in this style too!! Upcyling at its finest!! #spiritjersey #spiritjerseydisney #disneyland #disney #fyp #disneyparks
The main complaint with Spirit Jerseys overall is that the long-sleeved design isn’t super practical for Florida weather most of the time. If you buy one of these in the parks, you’ll likely only be able to comfortably wear it if you’re visiting in the winter months. And if you live in Florida, there are only a couple of months out of the year when you need a long-sleeve shirt.
So, trimming the shirt down to create a loose, short-sleeved shirt actually seems like a good idea! One of our team members tried it out and loved the results.
She said she’d definitely recommend doing this with any older Spirit Jerseys you might have sitting in the back of your closet, but it might not be the best plan for that brand-new one you just bought (because it just seems kind of wasteful considering how expensive these shirts are). But if you’ve got an old one that you want to repurpose to give it new life, this is a great option.
She trimmed off the long sleeves and about half of the bottom, which creates a loose, flowy t-shirt that’s much more practical for Florida weather. It works especially well if you have a Spirit Jersey that’s a size or two larger than what you actually normally wear.
If you want to try out this hack for yourself, you can grab a Spirit Jersey and get scissoring!
Get the New Mickey Donut Spirit Jersey
This would be a good option if you just want to trim off the sleeves and not the bottom because you don’t want to lose that cute Mickey-shaped donut design!
You might not want to use this hack on new, full-priced Spirit Jerseys, so we found a couple of Jerseys that are ON SALE right now, making it a lower-stakes experiment.
Get the Captain America Spirit Jersey for 40% Off
This Captain America Spirit Jersey could be a good option, as you can keep most of the design even if you trim off a good portion of the bottom half.
Get the Star Wars Spirit Jersey for 32% Off
This Star Wars one is also a good choice because the picture and words are all located on the top half of the Spirit Jersey, and the sleeves are plain, so you’re not trimming off any of the design if you chop off the sleeves and bottom part.
So what do you think of this new trend? Are you running to your closet to find old Spirit Jerseys or staring at your screen with a look of absolute horror on your face?

No way! Not for that price. Spirit jerseyS/ Long sleeve shirtS for us from up north, DCL platinum, and DVC members comes in handy. 1) airplane travel shirt 2)after swim evening stroll in WDW resorts 3) on super AC disney cruise boats especially dining and theater 5) cover up after Castaway Cay and Lighthouse point and many more.

I love spirit jerseys just the way they are!!! They’ve been incredibly comfortable my last 3 trips- each in either Nov or Dec… Not too heavy not too light. I’m looking for Animal Kingdom & Hollywood Studios themed ones now for my Nov trip this year

I have to agree that spirit jerseys are too expensive to cut up like this. I’d much rather buy a t-shirt or sweatshirt that I love.

I see the minimum price on used going up on ebay over past year. Though people were just happy with used because the price for new has nearly doubled. But also this….

I have been cutting up shirts for years. They are usually too long. Sometimes I also cut the neck band off and make v-neck shirts.

I do WISH that Disney produced some more tank top styled and/or more flattering neckline t-shirts. I do feel that it would be nice to have more short-sleeve AND lighter weight (not see through though) spirit jersey Disney shirts available even though I feel Disney has WAY too much merchandise between ALL that places that carry the same stuff.
