There are plenty of reasons why someone might want to become a member of the Disney Vacation Club.
DVC Members get tons of perks like discounts on dining, shopping, and more, early access to new rides and attractions, and of course — being able to vacation at Disney properties using pre-purchased points. Joining Disney Vacation Club is a commitment, though, and a new law may make you think twice about it.
A new law will allow Disney Vacation Club to remove an owner, purchaser, or guest from the property for inappropriate conduct. House Bill 429 (HB 429) gives timeshare companies the same rights as hotels to ban those staying at their properties who engage in unruly conduct, even if at their “Home Resort,” in Disney’s case. The law explicitly allows timeshare companies — such as DVC — to “take any action, including arrest or removal from the timeshare property, against any purchaser, including a deeded owner, or guest or invitee of such purchaser or owner,” if they behave in conduct deemed inappropriate or in violation of the timeshare agreement.
The relevant text of the law — which went into effect July 1st — can be read here:
“With regard to any timeshare project as defined in s. 509.242(1)(g), the managing entity or manager has all of the rights and remedies of an operator of any public lodging establishment or public food service establishment as set forth in ss. 509.141, 509.142, 509.143, and 509.162 and is entitled to have a law enforcement officer take any action, including arrest or removal from the timeshare property, against any purchaser, including a deeded owner, or guest or invitee of such purchaser or owner who engages in conduct described in s. 509.141, s. 509.142, s. 509.143, or s. 509.162 or conduct in violation of the timeshare instrument.”
Many guests think of the DVC as Disney’s version of a timeshare. But uniquely, Members are not “locked in” to a particular Disney destination, Resort, style of accommodation, season of travel, or length of stay. Rather, Members utilize a Vacation Points system, offering more flexibility.
Disney Vacation Club Members receive a yearly allotment of Vacation Points based off of “the size of the real estate interest” of their “Home” Disney Vacation Club Resort. Members may then use their Vacation Points to book their vacations.

Omg I am shaking my head at how many jerks there are at DVC properties that this had to be made into a law. It’s a shameful fact that our society has fallen so low that manners and common courtesy are no longer the rule.

I’m a DVC member, and I’m completely in support of this ruling. If someone can’t be respectful on property, drag them out. You shouldn’t enjoy immunity just because you’re a member, I don’t care how much you paid for points.
Shayne says
I’m not sure this will have a big impact on DVC ownership. As I read it, it just provides for the same remedies that hotel owners already have with regard to their guests. It’s certainly not a reason to avoid purchasing DVC points, unless you’re prone to obnoxious and unwelcome behavior in public, I guess.

I wish DVC made sense for us. Maybe someday. But actually, if anything, this new law makes it more enticing, not less, for us to consider becoming members. We haven’t experienced much ‘unruly behavior’ at the resort over the years, but there have been a few notable occasions which refuse to fade from my memory at least. And it seems from the stories I’ve seen in the past few years like unruly behaiovr might be on the rise. If I had known that there might be LESS recourse at a DVC property than at a hotel (in the past), it would have been one more reason in the “nope” column on DVC for us.

Let’s see if they actually enforce it before we make judgement.
The amount of unruly and rude guests is unbelievable at times.

I’m glad the governor signed this into law. We need more law and order. Less craziness.
Donna Gallo says
I agree. This should have been in effect from the moment you sign the.DVC contract. People who have purchased DVC have spent a great deal of money to be a part of something special. We should never have to deal with rude, disrespectful, those who think they are entitled individuals infringing on our rights. I sincerely hope Disney adds this to their future DVC contract purchases.

Completely support this act. Long over do.
