Bob Iger has been very busy since taking over as CEO of The Walt Disney Company for the second time in 2022.
Since then, he’s announced his #1 priority for the company (streaming), as well as announced some future movie and Disney Parks projects (which will invest $60 billion in the parks over the next ten years). He even announced a mega sports streaming service that would bring sports content from ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Now, Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, are teaming up to purchase a professional soccer team.
According to Variety, Bay, the dean of the University of Southern California’s journalism school, and Iger, Disney CEO, are near a more than $50 million deal that would give them a controlling stake in Los Angeles’ Angel City FC pro women’s soccer team.
This deal would make Angel City FC, one of 14 teams in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League. If the deal goes through, Bay and Iger would replace Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian (and husband of Serena Williams) as the team’s controlling shareholders. The investment from Bay and Iger would value the team at $300 million.
Angel City FC currently has three co-founding partners, including actor Natalie Portman, tech investor Kara Nortman, and entertainment executive Julie Uhrman (who is the club’s current president). There are also an additional 100 investors in the team, including celebrities like Serena Williams, Jennifer Garner, and Eva Longoria. Iger was previously seen at an Angel City FC home game on June 30th.
