Planning and perfectly executing a Disney World vacation isn’t for the faint of heart. Things can get even more complicated when you add in a heat advisory for Central Florida.
We’re experts on ways (and products) to help you keep cool in the parks on any given day, and you might find yourself putting those suggestions to the test when the heat index rises. Central Florida’s latest severe weather advisory is currently in effect and we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the warning.
According to reports from the Orlando Sentinel and local news channel WFTV 9, Central Florida visitors and locals could be feeling the burn on Monday, July 8th. Multiple news outlets have reported the area is under a heat advisory beginning at 11AM and lasting through 6PM.
While Florida is no stranger to rising temps and humidity in the summer, it’s worth noting that usually the “feels like” temperature isn’t as high as it’s anticipated to be during this heat advisory. Under the advisory, those choosing to be out and about during the hottest hour of the day could risk experiencing heat index values upwards of 106 to 112 degrees. Actual temperature highs are expected to be in the low- to mid-90s for most of the area; however, as you can see, Orlando and its surrounding area are anticipating the highest temps.
Because of this, meteorologists are urging those out during these hours to enjoy the sun and heat with extreme caution. If you’re planning to be out, we strongly recommend staying as hydrated as possible (don’t get stingy on the water bottle refills or feel like you’re overusing Disney World’s free water policy), taking frequent breaks, and staying in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.
It’s also recommended to keep out of the sun as much as possible and make sure you’re applying sunscreen properly and frequently. You should plan to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. News reports are also suggesting holding off on strenuous outdoor activities until after the heat advisory window has passed through the day.
However, that won’t be the only harsh weather you’ll want to watch for throughout the day! The raised heat index could make way for scattered showers in the early evening. Areas affected by the heat advisory are seeing up to 60% chance of rain and storms Monday afternoon with an increased chance of stronger storms in some areas. It would be a great idea to go ahead and pack your rain gear in addition to what you plan to use to beat the heat!
