Writer’s Stop opened back in 1999 at MGM Studios Not only did it used to be a cute li’l coffee shop — but it also used to be a tiny BOOK store.
This location opened as an homage to Ellen DeGeneres’ Buy the Book from her first sit-com, “Ellen,” so it was designed to look like a soundstage. It was also used for author and celebrity signings.
And call me nostalgic and unwilling to relinquish the past, but the Writer’s Stop had the BEST iteration of the Carrot Cake Cookie — and nobody can tell me otherwise.
(A VERSION of the Carrot Cake Cookie can still be purchased over at Trolley Car Cafe in Hollywood Boulevard — and while I still enjoy it, I’m plagued with the ghosts of carrot cake’s past, KNOWING good and well just how SUPERIOR this treat used to be.)
Writer’s Stop closed on April 2, 2016 when Hollywood Studios shut down the Streets of America area to pave the way for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. Then, they replaced Writer’s Stop with Baseline Taphouse in 2017, which is now famous for its craft beers and small bites.
The backstory of the new BaseLine Taphouse is that it’s housed in an old printing factory – as an homage to the locations previous incarnation. So at least it kept that “printing” theme throughout.
I try not to hold a grudge toward BaseLine Taphouse for replacing Writer’s Stop — I really do — but this one’s a HARD pill to swallow, y’all… and I’m still working through those big feelings, so be patient with me. I must say, I do appreciate how BaseLine TapHouse pays tribute to its predecessor through its little Easter Eggs.
Next time you’re in BaseLine Taphouse to grab a cold one, take a look at the decor on the wall. At first, it might look like a bunch of clutter. But upon closer inspection, you’ll notice the block letters hidden on the shelves spell out “Writers Stop” — they’re actually the letters from the original sign!
Today, Baseline is a favorite stop for many of our team and our readers. And I can see why — but that doesn’t mean I don’t still miss the Writer’s Stop. Thanks for following us here at DFB!

You’re totally right about the carrot cake cookie. Nothing could beat the old Writer’s Stop version. I loved that shop, not only for their edible offerings, but also for their books and stationery.

I agree 100% ! Whenever we visited Disney World I had to stop in at Writer’s Stop to get that oh so delicious carrot cookie, look at all the interesting items, and just relax for a bit. That carrot cake cookie has not yet been duplicated but I’m still hoping! I really miss it and can’t help but sigh passing Baseline Tap House.

I struggle to understand the obsession with the carrot cake cookie as nothing about carrot connects to dessert to me, but everyone has their thing and I respect that. Now the real crime is the discontinuation of the greatest dessert item in the history of WDW…peanut butter pie at the Contempo Cafe.

I loved the Writer’s Stop and was sad when it closed. The only reason I would go to Baseline Tap House is for the free ice water.

There was nothing like stopping in at the Writer’s Stop after the Spectacle of Dancing Lights. Hot chocolate, carrot cake cookie and a seat on the sofa with a great book!

Todd,
I loved the peanut butter pie also but I found it too rich. I got it on one of our anniversary trips and had to take it with us and ate it over like two days but it was good.
