One of the things about Disney World is that things are always changing, and new things are always right around the corner.
For example, Splash Mountain closed and became a new ride, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Country Bear Jamboree recently got a new show. Test Track is getting a reimagining. So, a classic Disney ride getting updated isn’t a new thing. Now, some fans think that one ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios may be due for a reimagining, especially with some news that just dropped recently.
The ride in question is Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, which recently just came out of a long closure while some things on the ride were refreshed and updated. Now, the ride has an Aerosmith theme, which has been the theme since it first opened in 1999. However, according to The New York Times, Aerosmith is planning on retiring from touring.
Last year, Aerosmith lead vocalist Steven Tyler suffered from a vocal injury, which postponed the band’s farewell tour. Now, the band says a full recovery is not possible and the band has officially retired from touring altogether. It’s truly sad news for rock fans, especially as Tyler is known as one of the best rock vocalists of all time.
So what does this mean for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster? Well, the premise of the ride is that the roller coaster is taking to one of the band’s shows. So right now, that means the ride is already a little outdated. Also, we hate to admit it (because we feel so old), but younger generations just aren’t as familiar with Aerosmith as the rest of us. So the ride could be due for a big change.
We’ve tossed the idea out there into the universe, and it makes sense that Disney may be considering an update for the ride with a new theme. Of course, Disney hasn’t mentioned any such update, but maybe it’s time. Considering how focused the company is on IP (aka its own intellectual property), we wouldn’t say “no” to a Disney-themed version of the ride. In fact, we’ve had a lot of conversations about the ride becoming Muppets-themed, maybe revolving around the Electric Mayhem.
We’ve seen our readers make some good suggestions, too. A Powerline (as in A Goofy Movie) roller coaster would ROCK OUR SOCKS OFF, as would a Lilo & Stitch ride (how about a Hawaiian roller coaster ride?). Maybe it could even be themed to the very underrated Emperor’s New Groove and be themed around the crazy ride that happens after Yzma says, “Pull the lever, Kronk!” The possibilities are endless.
Of course, we’ll have to see if Disney does announce an upgrade, especially since it just spent a lot of time refreshing the current ride. We’ll be keeping an eye out for an announcement, though, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

Electric Mayhem doesn’t have multi-hit platinum records. It has to be a group/individual that has multiple hits and can appeal to a lot of people. Some people want Taylor Swift.
Sharon Monaghan says
I like the adultness of the ride. Maybe they should do a dedication to rock and roll. Possibly different scenarios with different bands and music. Kind of like cosmic rewind. You go in and get a surprise band.
Chris Kinney says
The difference with Test Track is that the new version completely sucked, so it desperately NEEDS an update!

Powerline! Powerline! Powerline! Let’s go!!!

Leave it alone!!! Aerosmith is iconic. The recording room footage is like a time machine, that takes you to the era of Rock that is no more! Aerosmith is a multiplatinum selling artist that was in the top 40 for nearly 4 decades. They created radio-friendly rock, as well as album oriented heavy metal, and their unique hard driving music propels the coaster through the rock theming in Rock “n” Roller Coaster the way that no other band would. This attraction would be anemic without hard rock, and there are no new hard rock bands with a list of hits like they have. Modern music is sterile and computerized and would not do the ride justice. Rock “n” Roller featuring Aerosmith is the stuff of legends!

I agree with Sharon Monaghan – adult themed classic rock music (no Taylor Swift please), like Guardians and Star Tours – you’ll never know what you’ll get!
Ronjon says
Re-theme the Aerosmith coaster to an Iron Man coaster like they did in Paris.
Chris Kinney says
In regards to an Ironman coaster like Ronjon suggested, Disneyworld cannot legally use any characters, or characters from any teams, that Universal Studios in Orlando uses.
