Disney World is full of magic!
When you step into a park, you are immediately surrounded by wonder and delight. Disney has designed the parks so you only see the magic and as little as possible of anything else. You only see the themed facades of rides, not the back, industrial parts. You never see a character behind the scenes. And everything in the park looks as close to perfect as they can possibly make it so you can truly feel the magic of it all. But we’re going to apologize in advance, because we recently learned something that ruined us, and now we have to share it with you.
Did you know that when Disneyland opened, Walt had very specific requirements for trash cans? They had to be 30 feet apart, the doors had to swing, they had to be perfectly polished, and had to fit the environment.
If you’ve ever wandered around the World Showcase in EPCOT, you’ve likely seen the many trash cans that are distributed in the perfect locations. These trash cans meet most if not all of Walt’s requirements. They even have a neat emblem on them of the World Showcase logo.
But it’s the emblems on these trash cans that have caused us to become perhaps irrationally upset. When we have looked at these emblems over the many years of visiting EPCOT we always assumed that they were made with the same metal that the trash cans themselves are made out of. The emblems look so perfectly matched to the can that we thought they were actually metal. But we were WRONG!
We spotted some paint chipping off one of the emblems the other day, and we discovered that these emblems are PLASTIC!
Our lives changed in that moment. Everything we thought we knew about the magic of Disney was altered. We couldn’t believe that these emblems weren’t even metal on the metal trash cans. Our minds were blown. 🤯
You can see an up-close one that was perfectly fine and not chipping, but now that we know they are plastic, even the good ones don’t fool us anymore. We can’t unsee what we’ve now seen.
Ok, we’re being a tad bit dramatic. Disney magic is still alive and well, and a few small emblems on trash cans aren’t going to ruin that for us. But it was very surprising to find out that Disney doesn’t use metal emblems on their metal trash cans. We have always assumed they were metal simply because they blended in so well with the metal cans. But now we know the truth.
It is really neat how the trash cans change in every area of every park. Walt’s wish of having the trash cans blend into their environment has lived on for nearly 70 years. Now that’s magic, and we’re happy to experience every single day. (P.S. Please remember to use the trash cans!)

If maintenance and general upkeep were important, this would have never been discovered.

There are a lot of items in the park that are plastic, and not metal. We’ve been going there since they opened. Some bolts on girders. It doesn’t distract from my perspective. It’s easier to make plastic parts look old than steel look old
