If you’ve been sharing a Disney+ password, Disney is coming for you.
During the 2024 3Q earnings call, The Walt Disney Company confirmed that its long-promised crackdown on password sharing for Disney+ and Hulu will be rolling out in September.
According to Disney, accounts “suspected” of sharing their password with those outside their household will be sent a notification that offers “new capabilities to allow their borrowers to start their own subscriptions.”
In addition, similar to changes rolled out by fellow streaming giant Netflix, users will eventually have the option to add an outside-of-the-home user to their plan for an as-yet-undisclosed fee. The aforementioned Netflix version costs $7.99.
According to Disney executives during the latest earnings call, Disney has gotten “no backlash at all to the [paid sharing] notifications that have gone out and to the work that we’ve already been doing” in other regions outside the United States.
The password crackdown comes at the same time Disney has announced price increases for its family of streaming services. Beginning on October 17th, 2024, the ad-supported version of Disney+ will go up $2 to $9.99 monthly, the Premium version with no ads will also rise by $2 to $15.99 monthly, Hulu with ads will increase by $2 to $9.99 per month, and the ad-free Hulu plan will go up $1 to $18.99 per month. Disney’s triple-play bundles — featuring Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ — will also increase in price by $2. The Disney Bundle Trio Basic plan will go up to $16.99 per month, while the Disney Bundle Trio Premium plan will be $26.99 monthly.
The full breakdown of offerings come October will look as follows:
- Disney+ Basic (With Ads) — $9.99 (old: $7.99)
- Disney+ Premium (No Ads) — $15.99 (old: $13.99)
- Hulu With Ads — $9.99 (old: $7.99)

- Hulu + Live TV (With SVOD Ads) — $82.99 (old: $76.99)

During a CNBC interview, Disney Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Hugh Johnston spoke of the price increases, which come on the heels of Disney+ being profitable for the first time in its history, saying, “People tend to focus on price, but value is what the consumer perceives… We do feel like we’ve earned that pricing in the marketplace.”
In conjunction with raising prices and profitability, Disney is finally going to implement their long-threatened crackdown on Disney+ password sharing in the coming months. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney financial news.
