UPDATED September 10, 2024
Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World is preparing to open a BRAND NEW THEMED LAND featuring those lovable monsters from MONSTERS, INC.!
That’s right… the monsters are inviting YOU to Monstropolis, where they need human laughter to power the city and keep it running.
In August 2024, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro made the official announcement as he shared, “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley. You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”
The story of the land will pick up after the events of the popular Pixar film, and humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. Disney shares that here, “you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters” and even visit the Laugh Factory!
Monsters, Inc. Land Attraction
“You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!” Oh, did I mention that this statement is in reference to a brand new Monsters, Inc. roller coaster?
Monsters, Inc. Land will feature Disney’s VERY FIRST suspended coaster, which “will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…” (A suspended roller-coaster is one where you sit in your seat while your legs dangle off the ground. The seat is attached to the track above your head instead of under your seat.)
We had the chance to check out a first look at all the Imagineering model for the upcoming coaster at the D23 event where the ride announcement was made.
The intricate model truly is reminiscent of the door scenes from Monsters, Inc.

More Monstrous Fun?
We’ve noticed something upon exploring the concept art drawings for Monsters, Inc. Land. When zooming in you can see the iconic eyeball sculpture that is in front of Harryhausen’s in the Monsters, Inc. movie.
Harryhausen’s is the restaurant that Mike Wazowski takes Celia Mae out on a date for her birthday. (It is also where Sulley barges in to tell Mike about Boo.) It is a Japanese restaurant that is notoriously hard to get a reservation to. In the movie, you can see monsters chowing down on eyeballs and sushi. The full menu includes appetizers such as Goo-Tofu, Vegetable Tempuki, Swill and Sour Soup, and Flab Cake. There is also a variety of sushi a la carte options like a Spider Roll, Carrion Katsu, Howling Hamachi, and more. For dinner dishes, you can choose from Assorted Yukitori and Kappa Mucki. The restaurant also offers some desserts and sake.
While Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that this restaurant will be coming to the new Monsters, Inc. Land, the fact that it is in both of the concept art drawings leads us to believe it is pretty likely we will see a Harryhausen’s in this new area. Could this mean we are getting a sushi restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios? Only time will tell!
Monsters, Inc. Land Timeline
Construction on the new land will begin in 2026, and we’re so excited! But don’t you worry… if you’re feeling a teeny bit frightened about the presence of monsters in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, just remember the Monsters, Inc. motto: “We Scare Because WE CARE!”
We CAN’T WAIT to share EVERYTHING about this monstrously FUN new land as it is revealed. In the meantime, find a COMPLETE GUIDE to Disney World’s Hollywood Studios HERE!
