Something wicked this comes comes.
At the D23 Ultimate Fan Event, Disney released a slew of information about upcoming theme park projects including a new Cars area coming to Magic Kingdom, new Marvel and Avatar experiences at the Disneyland Resort, and Monster’s Inc. at Hollywood Studios. However, for longtime Disney Parks fans, there was arguably nothing more exciting than Villains Land.
Rumors of a Disney Villains-themed land coming to the Magic Kingdom have been a mainstay of the Disney fan community for decades, with alleged plans dating back to the 1990s. That long wait made it a dream — or perhaps a nightmare is more appropriate — come true for fans when the land was FINALLY announced at D23.
During the announcement, Josh D’Amaro said of the land, “Be prepared, you poor unfortunate souls, it’s going to be a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be.”
Now, days after the D23 announcement, Disney has confirmed further details about the highly-anticipated land, including its location. According to the Disney, “guests will be able to venture Beyond Big Thunder Mountain into an all-new land dedicated to Disney Villains. Inspired by the wicked characters fans know and loathe, the multi-acre expansion will include two major attractions, plus dining and shopping. Walt Disney Imagineering is pushing creative boundaries to dark and mysterious levels to bring this new, first-of-its-kind land to life.”
That’s right — it’ll be past Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!
The land “will encompass all your dreams- er, nightmares. The space will be home to two major attractions, dining, and shopping on an incredibly twisted grand scale… You might have just felt a shiver run down your spine. That’s because preparation is already underway at Magic Kingdom for this new land. Maybe think twice before you indulge in that next shiny red apple…”
This massive new Villain-themed land, combined with the also-announced Cars expansion coming to the Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, is the largest expansion in the history of Disney World’s original theme park.
After literal decades of waiting, Villains Land is FINALLY coming to the Magic Kingdom, and now we know exactly where this bastion of evil will be located! Stay tuned to DFB for further updates on the massive changes coming to the Magic Kingdom.

I’ve listened to people talk about a Villain’s Land relating it to a neat place to shake your fist at the good guys. However, a land dedicated to evil, wrong doing, etc in actuality is just wrong. This is a magical place where you come to be happy and build memories for your children and yourself. Not celebrating villains who made life miserable for someone.
RickTR says
It will never happen. The current imagineers can’t even keep a poorly re-themed ride running. All these big projects are just a reaction to Epic Universe.
Jim says
Villains should be a 5th gate. Just sayin’….

Great news and I hope they do not go so dark because day time for families can be an asset as villains are many things! If they make parts come to life or glow at night for the older crowds like me that would be a two for one!!! Let’s see just how imagination (Disney) can be to make this a successful day and night park. Fun kids parade for families and then another for adults later on. Maps or interactive magic band finds both day and night really let people explore and find and selfie walls. I am excited and hope Disney is listening!

So exciting! Can’t wait! Literally, I can’t wait 3 years for completion.

I wonder how the entrance will be themed and how will this effect the train?
Lori says
I can’t relate evil to magic happy place. Villains are villains not what we want are future to emulate. I wonder why the evil ones are so popular it is scary that is what people think is glamorous

I still remember the Villains-themed stores that used to be on Pleasure Island and in Hollywood Studios, and the theming and merchandise were really neat. I think the Descendants series is a good example of how Disney can make a Villains theme still work for family fun. If not everyone will like it, well, not everyone likes roller coasters, or kiddie rides (sometimes not even kids), or every IP. More room for the people who will like it, and lower crowds in the other areas for the people who don’t.
Lucretia Kleinman says
Dear Lori: Oh, my goodness. It’s just fun! Villains are part of story telling.

Sounds cool, but doesn’t really fit in MK. Magic Kingdom already has the most attractions, this seems like a bit of a waste. They should either add a new gate or open a new resort location.
Rochelle Holbrook says
Yes but it seems like everything that Disney is saying it is going to do will take 3 years till we see it. I thought Indiana Jones would be there by next year sometime. It seems frustrating to hear they are planning all this but we are a long way off from seeing any of it.
Janet MacFarlane says
I would love to see it really dark with adults only or even Adult only nights
June says
I’m with you, Lori. Villains don’t belong in Disney World.
Luci says
Have heard rumors of destroying Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer’s Island to build Cars which would be terrible. Then heard they aren’t placing it there. We found the island a great place to let the kids climb and relax on busy park days when crowds were high. Enjoyed the green space too for recharging. Putting new builds beyond Thunder Mountain and Haunted Mansion in areas not previously open to guests would be ideal.

My special needs daughter will be so happy that she will be able to see her favorite villain Cruella DeVille.
She was terribly disappointed that the villain store at DisneyWorld closed a few years ago.
