If you’ve been paying attention to Disney World, there are a whole lot of changes coming to the parks, especially at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Hollywood Studios will be getting a new Villains stage show and a whole Monsters, Inc. Land complete with a first-of-it’s kind roller coaster for Disney World. And we just found out that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is getting a retheme. But the thing that has been on our minds lately is The Little Mermaid, specifically the revision to the show that is coming to the park! Now, we’re excited about this new show, but more than that, we’re actually worried. Well, actually beyond worried. Let’s talk about why!
As we were saying, we’re big fans of The Little Mermaid, and we had been waiting patiently for years for Disney to tell us they were bringing back the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show from the pandemic closures.
Little did we know what we were in for when Disney surprised us and said they’d actually be bringing us a brand new version of the show which they called “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure.”
To say we were excited would be a massive understatement. But now, we’re feeling some serious concern about the project. Here’s why.
Delayed Like a Mermaid Waiting for their Legs
When Disney first announced The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, it was slated to open in Fall 2024. That timeline wasn’t lightning-fast, but we were patient because good things take time, right? Well, fast forward a bit, and Disney announced a delay. Now, the show’s opening was pushed back to Summer 2025.
Why the holdup? Maybe Disney will be reworking the attraction’s entrance to better flow with the surrounding area and create a more seamless experience for guests. Plus, let’s not forget the other major project that will also be happening in the park: the brand-new Monsters, Inc. land!
We love Mike, Sulley, and the gang, but we’re wondering if the attention on this much larger expansion could slow down progress on Ariel’s return. And honestly, we’re not sure we can handle another delay.
The Big Void
Here’s another thing to consider: Hollywood Studios has felt like it’s missing something without The Little Mermaid. This is what I mean — the park has so many action-packed rides (i.e. Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash!, Tower of Terror, etc.), but it really benefits from shows that give guests a chance to sit, relax, and enjoy a bit of Disney magic.
For years, Voyage of the Little Mermaid served that purpose. Sure, it was a little dated, but it was a fun and nostalgic nod to the original movie. The kiddos loved the glow-in-the-dark sea creatures, and us adults loved the A/C. All jokes aside, it was a great midday escape from the Florida heat and the crowds.
Without it, the park has felt like it’s been missing a key piece of its lineup. The delay of The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure just makes that void feel even bigger.
We’re Ready to Be Part of That World
At the end of the day, we’re still incredibly excited for The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure. Ariel’s story has always been a fan favorite, and we’re thrilled that Disney is giving this attraction a much-needed update.
That being said, with all the delays, changes, and competing projects, we can’t help but feel a little nervous. Will the show open on time? Will it live up to our expectations (admittedly they’re a bit high)? Only time will tell.
