Tropical Storm Nicole is on its way toward Florida, and Disney World is making preparations to keep guests and employees safe.

The Disney World parks will close early tonight (November 9th) in a phased closure, and Disney Springs is also going to close early. Some hotels will close, along with certain amenities like miniature golf courses. Additionally, nighttime shows and other events have been canceled. Quarterly earnings reports and calls can tell us a lot about what’s going on with Disney, including Disney+ subscriber numbers, theme park demand, changes in revenue, and more. During the most recent earnings call, Disney was asked about potential plans for keeping demand high during the predicted upcoming recession. Four times a year, Disney executives speak to investors and shareholders about the company’s financial achievements and goals, and we often hear updates about what’s coming to the parks and streaming services as well.

The most recent earnings call was the 2022 Q4 call, during which we learned that Disney lost about $65 million as a result of Hurricane Ian, guest demand for the parks is still often outpacing capacity, and executives are optimistic about what 2023 will bring. We also caught a brief mention of Disney’s annual pass programs that might provide a clue as to what changes we could see for these programs in the future. [Read more…]
UPDATE: Tropical Storm Nicole has been upgraded to a category 1 hurricane as of 7PM ET on November 9th.
Disney has already announced several changes that will happen at the Disney World parks and hotels in response to Tropical Storm Nicole, which is expected to affect Central Florida today (November 9th) and tomorrow.
The castle stays right here, even when it hurricanes.
The parks are going to have a phased closure beginning at 5PM on November 9th, and several nighttime events have been canceled. Disney suspended cancelation fees as well, so you can cancel your reservations without penalty if you had previously planned to visit in the next few days. During Disney’s Halfway to the Holidays event, we got the news that Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party will be returning to Magic Kingdom in Disney World and Festival of Holidays will be returning to Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort. Festival of Holidays will run from November 11th, 2022, to January 8th, 2023, and will feature new and returning entertainment, activities, and perhaps most importantly: food! Disney recently released the menus for this year’s Festival of Holidays booths, so let’s take a look!

We’re at the very first party of the season bringing you along with us for ALL of the updates. We’re also trying a TON of holiday treats to kick off the holiday season! But now, it’s time to get into the entertainment!
Disney’s most recent quarterly earnings report yielded some interesting statistics, such as exactly how much Hurricane Ian cost the company and how the recent revenue totals compare to years previous. Although many of the things we learned were about Disney’s past fourth quarter in 2022, we also learned about some potential future directions for The Walt Disney Company.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek and CFO Christine McCarthy participated in a question-and-answer session during the earnings call. During that session, they were asked about the potential impacts of a recession on the Disney company.
