It’s always a starry night inside Epcot’s Mexico pavilion where San Angel Inn serves delicious cuisine. Ask for a water-side table for extra romance or to allow kids to wave to the boats floating by!

Review: Disneyland’s Club 33 (Part 1 of 2)

As one who writes about Disney food, I’m so pleased to finally bring you my own personal review of what many consider to be the Mecca for Disney food-lovers — Club 33 in Disneyland Park.

Seeing as I had over 100 photos to share with you (taken by myself and Ms. Heather Sievers), and that the history and atmosphere of Club 33 are almost as important as the actual food served here, I wanted to split this post up into two separate parts. Today, we’ll walk through the Club from the mysterious doorbell to the Trophy Room, and all the way to the main Dining Room and balconies. And of course we’ll take a side trip to the restroom…

In tomorrow’s post, we’ll focus on the food, beverages, and even a special birthday surprise!

History of Club 33

You’ve all heard the myths and stories about this exclusive restaurant tucked into an unassuming address on 33 Royal Street in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square. Walt himself describes his vision for New Orleans Square in this video…

It was designed by Walt and a shortlist of hand-picked experts to be a quiet and tranquil location for important business meetings and meals, and a place for Walt to entertain friends and visiting VIPs without leaving the park.

Club 33 Bar Area

The restaurant was outfitted in the finest period antiques, lush fabrics and decor, original artwork and concept art created by Disney Imagineers, and authentic props from Disney films. And, of course, there were a few Disney touches that you wouldn’t expect to find anywhere else — like microphones hidden in the chandeliers and an audio-animatronic vulture who was meant to interact with guests!

What many people don’t realize is that Walt passed away before he was able to use Club 33 for its intended purpose. You can see the full history of the Club, including a few special secrets, in this history sheet… .

Snack Series: Disneyland’s Spicy Peanut, and Hunny Pot Caramel Apples

On my epic eating adventure with Heather in Disneyland a few weeks ago, we decided to sample two caramel apples that caught our eyes.

Heather had noticed the brand new “Spicy Peanut” caramel apple on her ventures through the parks, and I had always wondered what that adorable “Hunny Pot” caramel apple (that you can only find at Pooh Corner in Critter Country) was like on the inside.

Disney Cruise Review: High Tea at Palo

Dining in Disneyland columnist Heather Sievers brings us on Board the Disney Magic’s Mediterranean Cruise for High Tea at Palo!

Although this was my third Disney Cruise, my husband and I had never had a chance to dine at The Disney Cruise Line’s upscale (and kid-free) Palo. We’d heard amazing things, but were always so happy with our dining room experiences that we never strayed from our nightly servers. I now ask myself, “What the heck were we thinking?!?”

On this last cruise, an 11-day Mediterranean Cruise, we had not one, not two, but three chances to visit Palo; and honestly, I wish we had made even more reservations than that. Each visit was for a different meal. We tried the brunch (amazing), we tried the dinner (amazing), and we also visited the High Tea. This was my first “fancy” official type high tea and I will tell you this: high tea at Palo would be hard to top.

2011 Halloween Snacks Materialize in Disney Parks

Hmm… last I checked the calendar it was August, but in “Disney time” that means Halloween is right around the corner! Check out these not-so-spooky treats Heather and I found in Disneyland and in Disney World! One question, though — why is Mickey’s tongue hanging out on all of the logos? Weird. On we go…

I’m usually not a fan of the pre-packaged, hard-icing sugar cookies, but these might be too cute to pass up.

And here are a couple of treats for the candy corn lover! We didn’t try them, but gummy candy corn smelled oddly of butter….yep, I said butter. Next time you’re in a Disney candy store, see if you can find a bag and smell ’em. Would love to hear from anyone who’s tried them!

New restaurants and restaurant revitalization is coming to Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland. Watch for the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe and more!
Gourmet hot dogs are on the menu at Fairfax Fare in Hollywood Studios.
The dates for Disney World Free Dining being offered for 2011-2012 have been changed and new booking codes were released. Check to see if your dates are now listed! (Any bookings under the original codes will be honored. No worries!)
New menu items have been unveiled at two Magic Kingdom restaurants –- Cosmic Ray’s and Columbia Harbour House!

Well, I’m going to be honest with you. I’m looking through the thousands of pictures I took over my 6-day trip to Disneyland and I want to write about ALL of it RIGHT NOW!

The Hungry Bear Blueberry Pie is a Thing of Beauty

Since I obviously can’t do that, and I can’t bring all of you over to my living room to look through a slide show (we don’t have enough Doritos), I’ve decided to highlight five of my favorite discoveries here. I know that some of these are already near and dear to you lucky local Disneylanders, but they were new to me on this trip, and I loved ’em.

Each of these will be showcased in detail in longer review posts coming up over the next few months, but I couldn’t wait to share some of my personal new favorites with you ASAP!

Red Velvet Roulade

Over at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen we found plenty of new favorites. From the beignets to the garlic cheese bread, almost everything we tried was a winner.

But I have to say we were very pleased that we switched our dessert order last minute to this Red Velvet Roulade. Moist, rich red velvet cake stuffed with incredibly creamy, tangy cream cheese frosting. The perfect ending to a great meal.

Battle of the Disney Chocolate-Covered Sandwiches

It was over a year ago that I first shared my chocolate-covered peanut butter sandwich experience here on the Disney Food Blog.

And since enjoying that one-of-a-kind snack, I’ve found that it’s rarely available in Walt Disney World anymore — even though you can find it regularly in Disneyland (when it’s not selling out in the span of a few hours) at Pooh Corner in Critter Country and at the Candy Palace on Main Street. It’s also at the Candy Shop in Disney California Adventure.

What you can still find regularly in Walt Disney World (and in Disneyland) are the the chocolate-covered s’mores, the sister candy to the peanut butter sandwich. They look exactly the same, but inside they’re oh-so-different!

I figured we should highlight both of these and see which one you guys prefer (be sure to vote in the poll at the end of the post!).

New and Expanded Restaurants at Disneyland’s Main Street USA

More Disney food news and updates — this time, we’re back in Disneyland Park…

Jolly Holiday Bakery and Cafe Replaces Blue Ribbon Bakery

Recently, the Plaza Pavilion at the end of Disneyland’s Main Street USA has been used as the Annual Pass Processing Center. For foodies, this is just wasted space! The good news is that January 2012 will see the opening of the Jolly Holiday Bakery and Cafe at this location. Look for an expanded menu and outdoor seating!

Inspired by the “Jolly Holiday” song in Mary Poppins, I wonder if they’ll offer “raspberry ice…and then some cakes and tea”. For certain, the next part of the song will not be reproduced: “Order what you will; There’ll be no bill; It’s complimentary.” 😉

At the same time, the Blue Ribbon Bakery will shut its doors as part of the Main Street, U.S.A. revitalization.
