According to History.com, the holiday “celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.” While it is “relatively minor” in terms of holidays over in Mexico, in the United States it has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.
