Review: Pineapple and Coconut Frozen Yogurt at Epcot’s Refreshment Cool Post!

is a stop along the way around World Showcase. You’ll find it after you cross the bridge from the China Pavilion towards Germany. The Cool Post typically offers a menu of pretty standard quick-eats: hot dogs, frozen slushes, and fruit cups are among the choices.

However, this unassuming spot has been chosen as the only place to offer a special summer treat unique to Epcot: Frozen Yogurt soft-serve, available in Pineapple, Coconut, or a swirl of the two!

It’s next to impossible, of course, for most Disney food fans to hear the words “pineapple” and “soft-serve” in the same sentence without thinking of the original pineapple soft-serve treat: Dole Whip!

So, we thought we’d present this review by bringing you a little side-by-side comparison of the two.

We’ll start with the most obvious characteristic: color. While the Dole Whip is a light yellow, it’s still a definite yellow, where the Pineapple Frozen Yogurt’s yellow is so pale, it’s almost white. My yogurt was a pineapple-coconut swirl, and you can just barely make out the yellow of the pineapple yogurt against the white of the coconut.

Review: Café Liégeois at Les Halles in Epcot’s France Pavilion

When you’re visiting Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the huge array of choices and just stick with what you know. (In the case of the frangipane, I forgive you.)

Now, maybe you’ve been tempted to step outside the box, but just haven’t known enough about the other options to trust that it would be a good use of your snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan or your dining dollars.

Well, that’s why you have us! Today we’re going to demystify one of those lesser-known items: the Café Liégeois!

You’ll spot the Café Liégeois among the soft desserts in the bakery case near items like Chocolate Mousse and Fruit Parfaits.

My understanding is that while a Café Liégeois is traditionally an ice cream treat, the Les Halles take is a coffee and cream mousse, which offers the full coffee-flavor experience in three layers.

Taking it from the top, the white layer is an airy sweet cream, and reminds me of the flavored coffee creamers that you can buy in the store (and thank goodness for those — they are what get me through the morning!).

The second, dark layer is an intense espresso flavor for the serious coffee connoisseur, and the most dense in texture of the three.

Review: The New Café Glacé at L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France Pavilion

The creative minds behind the dishes coming out of L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France Pavilion are at it again!

Home to Ice Cream Martinis, Pressed Brioche Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Chocolate Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches, L’Artisans has introduced another cold treat that’s perfect for the rising temps: the Café Glacé, an Iced Cappuccino with ice cream and whipped cream!

With the exception of the Chocolate Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich (since there is no improving upon chocolate and chocolate 😉 ), some of the fun behind the treats at L’Artisans is that they are customizable with your choice of 16 flavors of house-made ice cream and sorbet.

The same is true of the Café Glacé: pretty much the only dilemma here is picking your flavor. Even after I had placed my order and paid, I still wasn’t sure which scoop of ice cream to choose.

It was a tough call considering the options of White Chocolate Coconut and Hazelnut, but ultimately I went with the Caramel fleur del sel (salted caramel).

Review: The New Napoleon at Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France

You’ll never hear us deny it: we’re fans of just about every treat that comes out of Epcot’s France Pavilion.

As it turns out, so are lots of other people! So much so, in fact, that the well-loved Boulangerie Patisserie outgrew it’s original small space and reopened in early 2013 to better accommodate more guests… and more treats! (The original space, by the way, is now home to L’Artisan des Glaces.) Additionally, a large indoor seating area was added even while the charming outdoor seating remained.

When the Patisserie reopened in it’s new space as Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie, we were so excited to see (and even more thrilled to taste) all the goodness this spot had to offer.

By and large, reactions to the offerings – from sweet to savory – were positive. Many favorites from the old Patisserie made it over to the new, and the expanded options were varied, impressive, and flavorful.

One alteration, however, that displeased some guests was a change to a much-loved pastry: the Napoleon. It had been updated with the reopening to provide a more authentic French culinary experience. Upon learning that people were unhappy with the change, the chefs in the France Pavilion recently made an update…to the update 🙂 !

Review: Cronut a la Mode in Disney World’s Epcot

Last December, we were thrilled to report that Epcot had jumped on the cronut wagon!

Epcot’s Refreshment Port (if you’re walking from Canada, you’ll find the Port immediately before the paths that take you into Future World) quietly introduced them with this unassuming sign listing “Croissant Doughnut.”

Of course, “Croissant Doughnuts” is quite an apt description for these fried pastries formed out of rings of croissant dough (plus, as I mentioned in the previous post, the name “cronut” is trademarked — so legal stuffs and whatever).

We tried ’em. We loved ’em. But guess what!!

Not only are the cronuts still in full swing at the Refreshment Port… you can now get them A LA MODE.

You need to approach the counter to see this option: it’s on a small sign near the registers, so you can’t find it on the regular display… at least, not yet.

The ice cream is a generous portion of vanilla soft serve. If you want ice cream with every bite, you’re set!

News! 2014 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival FULL Food Menus!

We have big news from Epcot today!

With just a few weeks to go before the opening of the 2014 Flower and Garden Festival, and thanks to a heads up from DFB reader Linda, we have the full list of menus for the super popular Outdoor Kitchens! Mark your calendars — the Festival lasts from March 5 through May 18.

These kiosks, which are reminiscent of the Marketplace Booths that dominate the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, feature delicious small plates that allow you to taste fresh flavors from the garden.

There are lots and lots of new things to try. One new booth will debut — Urban Farm Eats — while we say Auf Wiedersehen to the German-inspired Bauernmarkt for 2014. (Let’s hope it’s back next year!)

Review: Ice Cream Crêpes in Epcot’s France Pavilion

We recently shared some of our favorite Disney food kiosks, and this was definitely one of the contenders! There is so much culinary awesomeness these days in Epcot’s France Pavilion.

There are, of course, the table service restaurants — the bistro-esque Chefs de France and the more upscale Monsieur Paul. And no trip through this part of World Showcase is complete without at least one stop by Les Halles, the new boulangerie patisserie in the back of the pavilion.

And now that the long-awaited L’Artisan des Glaces is open in the former bakery space, the offerings are pretty robust. You can find something for every meal of the day here!

But, if you can believe it, there are even more fun food finds awaiting you along the main thoroughfare within the dark green kiosks of France.

Here, you can get grown up slushies, Champagne, and one of my favorite French street foods, Crêpes!

The très thin, tender, pancake-like creations are available here in some traditional flavors. But there are also some fun and super indulgent twists, like crêpes and ice cream.

That’s the treat we were after today…

If you need a beverage, you’ll also find some espresso drinks here as well as, well, beer. Because everyone knows what a perfect pairing crêpes and beer are. 🙂

One of the best part of this little kiosk is that you get a show while you wait! Inside the stand, you can see the crêpe griddle, where the thin batter is ladled and worked to form the basis for your treat. A container of Strawberry Preserves stands at the ready for saucing.

Fun Find: Phineas and Ferb Treats at Epcot (“The Doofenslurper!!”)

Several Epcot kiosks, including Promenade Refreshments where these came from, have some special offerings for Phineas and Ferb fans.

The three special items include an Agent P sugar cookie on a stick, a kids’ “Power Pack,” and the “Doofenslurper.”

The Power Pack, $7.99, includes an Uncrustables sandwich, carrot sticks, a Danimals yogurt, and a juice box, all served in a souvenir Agent P lunch box. This is a relatively healthy child’s lunch plus a great takeaway for one reasonable price.

But the thing I really wanted for me was the Doofenslurper, because how could you not want something called a Doofenslurper?

The Doofenslurper is frozen lemonade (more like a slushie) topped with a now ubiquitous fruity foam.
