Spring is in full swing in Disney World and we’ve had a month of restaurant openings, new ears, and more. Some of the news this month seemingly came out of nowhere, so let’s take a look. Here are the 3 most unexpected bits of Disney news/events from April!Â
Recently, a lot has been going on with Disney World’s system of self governance, and something major just happened.

The Florida Senate and House recently passed a bill that would dissolve Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District, which essentially allows Disney World to act as its own county, and now, the bill has taken another step forward.
Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Bill (what critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” bill) has prompted a number of responses from Disney, former Disney executives, and others.

Most recently, the Bill was passed into law and Disney issued a statement in response, indicating that the Bill should never have been passed or signed into law and that its goal would be for the law to be repealed or struck down. Disney has also said that they are creating a task force to develop strategies to be a more positive force for the LGBT community, and “new content for children and family” will be a large part of the focus of this task force. Recently, protests were held in front of Disney’s corporate headquarters in response to some of Disney’s recent statements and actions.

The Bill’s official name is the “Parental Rights in Education bill.” We’ve already shared updates regarding Disney’s initial response, the first response from CEO Bob Chapek, Chapek’s follow-up comments during Disney’s Shareholder meeting, and responses that have since been made to those comments. Now, there’s been a new development.
Over the past several weeks, a controversial Florida bill has been the topic of several news stories.

The bill has been heavily criticized by some individuals and groups, and some had called for Disney to issue a statement in response to the issue. Disney ultimately did issue a statement of sorts that was shared by Good Morning America, and we shared more details about that here.
