News: New Menu Coming to Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in Disney World

Well, we already have a glimpse of what changes will be revealed when it reopens tomorrow, October 1st… because an ALL-NEW MENU has been posted on the Walt Disney World website!

That’s right… this former favorite-place-to-grab-a-burger for many Magic Kingdom guests has entirely revamped the menu, now focused on Mexican fare, as opposed to the previous burgers, BBQ sandwiches, and side items like Chili-Cheese Fries.

The next time you mosey on in to pay a visit to Pecos Bill, you’ll see Fajita Platters, Burritos, Rice Bowls, and Salads on the menu.

Pecos Bill’s Tall Tale Inn and Cafe

Starting with the entree choices: Fajita Platters — with either beef or chicken — seem to be the star entree, and Burritos have a presence as well. All are served with Cilantro Rice and Beans, something we’re already familiar with from Tortuga Tavern (a seasonally-open Counter Service restaurant, which is also currently rumored to be facing a menu change of its own). Looking for an amazing snack to munch on while perusing Disneyland? Then you must try the Cinnamon Crisps from Rancho Del Zocalo in Frontierland.

Located in between Big Thunder Mountain and the Shooting Gallery, Rancho Del Zocalo is a counter service restaurant offering up Mexican cuisine in the wild wild west of Disneyland.

Cinnamon Crisps are a hidden gem that not many people know about, and Rancho Del Zocalo is the only spot in the park that sells them.

Review: Sweet Potato Nuggets at Magic Kingdom’s Golden Oak Outpost

The last time we visited the Golden Oak Outpost in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, it was for a Fry Feast, trying out their revamped menu featuring loaded Waffle Fries.

Because my hands (and tummy) were full of fries that day, I didn’t have the chance to sample the other new addition to the menu at that time: Sweet Potato Nuggets. Before the fry takeover, you may recall that Golden Oak Outpost offered Corn Nuggets dusted with Powdered Sugar for a short time. So today we’re back to finally check out the newest nuggets on the scene.

You’ll see the Sweet Potato Nuggets on the menu underneath the variety of Waffle Fries. By the way, where there were previously four types of fries, you’ll now see three (the Tex-Mex Fries didn’t make the final cut).

At first glance, the Sweet Potato Nuggets looked a bit like the Corn Nuggets (save for the color), thanks to the helping of powdered sugar dusting the top.

The next time you’re stepping into the Wild West of Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, you simply MUST mosey on up to Golden Oak Outpost.

Not exactly what you’d expect to hear, I know, seeing as the Outpost typically featured a fairly simple menu of items like Chicken Sandwiches, Chicken Breast Nuggets, and fries made to feed hungry cowpokes who don’t feel like facing the lines at Pecos Bill’s.

But not anymore! Golden Oak Outpost just received yet another menu revamp.

They’ve introduced not two, not three, but FOUR variations of over-the-top, loaded-up Waffle Fries! We tried them ALL. And one of them is awfully close to the Figaro Fries of yore…

So join us on a veritable FRY FEAST, friends! And we’re not going to make you wait to see what the Figaro fuss is about…

BLT Waffle Fries

We’re starting with the BLT Waffle Fries. Just like the sandwich it’s named after, you’re looking at bacon, lettuce, and tomato, with the addition of Ranch dressing.

You can barely spy a fry at first for all that BACON!! And this is the good stuff – nice and crispy. None of that wimpy, soggy bacon here. The ample amount of Ranch dressing oozes nicely over the whole batch, and the lettuce and tomato add variation to the texture.

And, yes, as you can now tell, there are indeed waffle fries underneath it all, ready to fulfill their yummy, starchy, potato-y destiny!

So. ARE these Figaro Fries given a second life?! Not exactly. No cheese here. And, obviously, these are waffle fries as opposed to regular. But it’s as close as we’re gonna get for now, and I — for one — will take it!

Review: Lunch at The Diamond Horseshoe in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland

It’s time to head to the Wild West and take a look behind some rarely open doors…

The Diamond Horseshoe is a seasonal option in the Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, which means it’s open only on peak-level crowd days (much like Tortuga Tavern in Adventureland).

During Thanksgiving week and around Christmas, it’s been known to host an evening buffet. When it’s open for lunch, though, it’s a counter service stop featuring turkey and barbeque sandwiches served up to the tunes of a self-playing Wurlitzer.

Perhaps you yourself have strolled past The Diamond Horseshoe.

If so, odds are good (well, pretty great, really) that you’ve seen these doors closed.

But on the busiest of busy days, you just might catch them open… it’s time to step inside The Diamond Horseshoe!

And since it’s so rare to find this place open, we’ve got a little exploring to do…

Okay, I’ll admit… like any good Disney geek, when the doors opened I walked straight past the ordering counter to check out the atmosphere. But I felt fine lingering, since someone left their umbrella at the front 😉 , which indicates to me that folks at the Horseshoe are expected to sit and stay awhile!

Though located in the more rustic surroundings of Frontierland, when you step into this ol’ West music hall, the atmosphere seems decidedly more lush — from the deep red curtains on the centerpiece stage…

Dining in Disneyland: L.B. Enterprises Elixir Stand in Frontierland

As part of the Legends of Frontierland event currently going on at Disneyland, there are some very fun things happening in the wild wild west. I was recently passing by when I was stopped by L.B. himself. He’s got his elixir stand set up and he’s ready to help you solve your life problems!

With lots of personality, L.B. told me all about his product. I’m not going to spoil any of the fun interaction or stories for you, instead I’ll just tell you that there are three elixirs to choose from.

According to L.B., “Each one of them something we’d all like more of: Knowledge, Luck & Charm.”

Dining in Disneyland: A Look Back at 1957 Park Eats

Fire up the flux capacitor and hop in the Delorean because we’re going back in time. I know, that’s Universal Studios talk, but Doc Brown is the only guy I know that can make this happen…

It’s 1957 at Disneyland. The park has only been open for two years, but Walt’s got lots of places for us to eat! Let’s take a little tour of our options starting with good ‘ol Main Street USA.

The Carnation Ice Cream Parlor (currently known as Gibson Girl) was the perfect spot for a cool treat. Further down the road you could stop at the Carnation Plaza Gardens for some quick service food. Does anyone remember the frozen malts they sold with the wooden spoons? I DO!

There was also the Refreshment Corner sponsored by Coca Cola, The Maxwell Coffee House Shop, The Puffin Bake Shop, and the Red Wagon Inn, which is said to have been Walt’s favorite park eatery and later became the Plaza Inn.

Another option was a cafeteria style restaurant called the Pavilion. Check out the photos below, I’m absolutely loving the popcorn cart and its cute little cowpoke customers!

Main Street USA

Take a right off of Main Street USA and you’ll stumble into Tomorrowland. Here, you can hit the Space Bar, an automat type restaurant as well as the Yacht Club (self service) and the Dairy Bar, which was an exhibit sponsored by the American Dairy Association.

After Tomorrowland, we’ll head over to Fantasyland. Here you can eat at the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship (YES PLEASE!) or get some fresh grape juice from the Welch’s Stand.

In 1957, Frontierland was the place to really get your grub on; it had the most dining options of all the lands in the park. The Chicken Plantation Restaurant served up a fried chicken dinner for just $1.70. Meals could be enjoyed on the patio of a plantation style home along the Rivers of America. The Plantation House closed in 1962 to make room for New Orleans Square.

News and Review: Corn Nuggets at Golden Oak Outpost in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

It sure is spring here at Disney World! The sun is high and strong, and the spring break crowds at the parks are rising a bit. The great thing about that is there are some really fun food finds cropping up around the Parks.

Certain food locations that aren’t always operating are opening their ordering windows and doors… and – in some cases – bringing some new snacks with them. Woo!

Take, for example, the Golden Oak Outpost in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland.

It’s not altogether unusual to find it open and offering some quick eats; in particular, a tasty Chicken Sandwich and Chicken Breast Nuggets (a six-piece version at a slightly lower price point, as opposed to the standard eight-piece… good to know!).

However, it’s also not unusual to see a sign suggesting that hungry cowpokes should stop by Pecos Bill’s because the spot is not currently serving.

So while I wasn’t super-surprised to see it operating, I was surprised to see a recent addition to the menu: Corn Nuggets Dusted with Powdered Sugar.

Looking for some quick eats while touring Disney World’s Frontierland? Are the lines at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe formidable? We have just the stop for you: Golden Oak Outpost.

Located near Splash Mountain, the little counter service stop offers a couple of hearty entree options as well as a few desserts.

I’ve stopped here several times on my travels, especially when this used to be the home of McDonald’s French Fries in Magic Kingdom (“There’s Gold in Them There Fries!”). But I’ve never done a review for you, so let’s get started!

Atmosphere

Golden Oak Outpost sports the same rustic, Wild West feel that you encounter throughout Frontierland.

The name — Golden Oak — is a reference to Walt Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch in California. The name is found elsewhere at Walt Disney World in the ultra upscale neighborhood of single family homes that are being built adjacent to Fort Wilderness Campground nearby.
