The Latest UPDATES on the Dissolution of Disney World’s Reedy Creek District

For over 50 years, Disney World’s land has all been subject to the control of a special district called the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID).

Welcome to Disney World

This district has essentially allowed Disney to act as its own county in many ways, giving it huge amounts of control over decisions regarding the land on which it operates in Florida. It also provided taxing authority and other powers to Disney. But, in 2022, a law was passed by the Florida legislature (and signed by the Florida governor) that will DISSOLVE the RCID by June of 2023, unless a new agreement is reached. The clock is ticking and 2023 is rapidly approaching, so what’s the status of the RCID right now? Here’s what we know.

UPDATE on the Dissolution of Disney World’s Reedy Creek District

The drama continues between Disney World and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Here’s a quick recap in case you missed this story: When Gov. DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education Bill — commonly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill — into law, The Walt Disney Company denounced the legislation. Seemingly in retaliation to Disney’s comments, Gov. DeSantis introduced new legislation to repeal the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which is a governing body that essentially allows Disney World to function as its own government.

The Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have been at odds since Disney opposed Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law (called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by some). In retaliation, DeSantis threatened to dismantle Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District and was ultimately successful in passing a bill that would do so. Reedy Creek Lawsuit Against Florida Governor DISMISSED

The political controversy surrounding Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) is far from over in Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that will dissolve RCID, which is a special district that essentially allows Disney World to operate as its own county.

The nature by which the bill to dissolve RCID was passed has been criticized by some, and others worry that the change will place a heavy burden on taxpayers in the counties where Disney World is located. The RCID is a special district under which Disney World’s land has operated for 50+ years. The special district arrangement essentially allows Disney to, in many ways, act as its own county and have a great deal of control over decisions made regarding the land it operates on in Orlando. But a recent bill passed by the Florida legislature and signed into law by the Florida Governor would dissolve the district in 2023 (unless a new agreement is reached). Now some Florida taxpayers are making their voices heard when it comes to this matter.

A bill that will dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District (“RCID”) has passed the Florida Senate and House of Representatives, and been signed by the Florida Governor. The RCID is a special district that has allowed Disney World to essentially act as its own county and have a great deal of control over the land on which it operates in Orlando. There have been some, however, who have argued that there might be some MAJOR roadblocks that could stand in Florida’s way of dissolving the RCID. What if the RCID does get dissolved, though?
